Revised Version 1895
1And DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of LeahH3812, whichH834 sheH834 bare unto JacobH3290, wentH3318 outH3318 to seeH7200 the daughtersH1323 of the landH776. 2And ShechemH7927 the sonH1121 of HamorH2544 the HiviteH2340, the princeH5387 of the landH776, sawH7200 herH3947; and he tookH3947 herH3947, and layH7901 with herH3947, and humbled herH3947. 3And his soulH5315 clave unto DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290, and he lovedH157 the damsel, and spake kindlyH3820 unto the damsel. 4And ShechemH7927 spake unto his fatherH1 HamorH2544, sayingH559, GetH3947 meH413 this damsel to wifeH802. 5NowH1961 JacobH3290 heardH8085 that he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 his daughterH1323; and his sonsH1121 were with his cattleH4735 in the fieldH7704: and JacobH3290 heldH1961 his peace untilH5704 they cameH935. 6And HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 wentH3318 outH3318 unto JacobH3290 to commune with him. 7And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 in from the fieldH7704 when they heardH8085 it: and the menH376 were grievedH6087, and they were veryH3966 wroth, becauseH3588 he had wrought follyH5039 in IsraelH3478 in lyingH7901 with Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323; which thingH5039 ought notH3808 to be doneH6213. 8And HamorH2544 communed with them, sayingH559, The soulH5315 of my sonH1121 ShechemH7927 longeth for your daughterH1323: I prayH4994 youH5414 giveH5414 herH802 unto him to wifeH802. 9And makeH5414 ye marriages with usH5414; giveH5414 your daughtersH1323 unto usH5414, and takeH3947 our daughtersH1323 unto youH5414. 10And ye shall dwellH3427 with usH6440: and the landH776 shall be beforeH6440 youH6440; dwellH3427 and tradeH5503 ye therein, and get youH6440 possessionsH270 therein. 11And ShechemH7927 saidH559 unto herH413 fatherH1 and unto herH413 brethrenH251, LetH5414 meH413 findH4672 graceH2580 in your eyesH5869, and whatH834 ye shall sayH559 unto meH413 I will giveH5414. 12AskH559 meH413 never soH5414 muchH7235 dowryH4119 and giftH4976, and I will giveH5414 accordingH5921 as ye shall sayH559 unto meH413: but giveH5414 meH413 the damsel to wifeH802. 13And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 answeredH6030 ShechemH7927 and HamorH2544 his fatherH1 with guile, and spake, becauseH834 he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 their sisterH269, 14and saidH559 unto them, WeH3588 cannotH3808 doH6213 this thingH1697, to giveH5414 our sisterH269 to one that is uncircumcisedH6190; for that were a reproachH2781 unto usH5414: 15OnlyH389 on this condition will weH518 consentH225 unto youH518: ifH518 ye will be as weH518 be, that everyH3605 maleH2145 of youH518 be circumcisedH4135; 16then will weH854 giveH5414 our daughtersH1323 unto youH5414, and weH854 will takeH3947 your daughtersH1323 to usH5414, and weH854 will dwellH3427 with youH5414, and weH854 will becomeH1961 one peopleH5971. 17But ifH518 ye will notH3808 hearken unto usH413, to be circumcisedH4135; then will weH518 takeH3947 our daughterH1323, and weH518 will be goneH1980. 18And their wordsH1697 pleasedH3190 HamorH2544, and ShechemH7927 Hamor’sH2544 sonH1121. 19And the youngH5288 manH5288 deferred notH3808 to doH6213 the thingH1697, becauseH3588 he had delightH2654 in Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323: and he was honoured above allH3605 the houseH1004 of his fatherH1. 20And HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 cameH935 unto the gateH8179 of their cityH5892, and communed with the menH376 of their cityH5892, sayingH559, 21TheseH428 menH376 are peaceable with usH5414; therefore letH5414 them dwellH3427 in the landH776, and tradeH5503 therein; for, beholdH2009, the landH776 is large enoughH3027 for them; letH5414 usH5414 takeH3947 their daughtersH1323 to usH5414 for wivesH802, and letH5414 usH5414 giveH5414 them our daughtersH1323. 22OnlyH389 on this condition will the menH376 consentH225 unto usH2063 to dwellH3427 with usH2063, to becomeH1961 one peopleH5971, ifH834 everyH3605 maleH2145 among usH2063 be circumcisedH4135, as they are circumcisedH4135. 23Shall notH3808 their cattleH929 and their substance and allH3605 their beastsH929 be ours? onlyH389 letH3808 usH929 consentH225 unto them, and they will dwellH3427 with usH929. 24And unto HamorH2544 and unto ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 hearkened allH3605 that wentH3318 outH3318 of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892; and everyH3605 maleH2145 was circumcisedH4135, allH3605 that wentH3318 outH3318 of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892. 25And it cameH935 to passH935 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, when they were sore, that twoH8147 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Dinah’sH1783 brethrenH251, tookH3947 eachH376 manH376 his swordH2719, and cameH935 uponH5921 the cityH5892 unawaresH983, and slewH2026 allH3605 the malesH2145. 26And they slewH2026 HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and tookH3947 DinahH1783 outH3318 of Shechem’sH7927 houseH1004, and wentH3318 forthH3318. 27The sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 uponH5921 the slainH2491, and spoiled the cityH5892, becauseH5921 they had defiledH2930 their sisterH269. 28They tookH3947 their flocksH6629 and their herdsH1241 and their asses, and that whichH834 was in the cityH5892, and that whichH834 was in the fieldH7704; 29and allH3605 their wealthH2428, and allH3605 their littleH2945 onesH2945 and their wivesH802, tookH7617 they captiveH7617 and spoiled, evenH853 allH3605 that was in the houseH1004. 30And JacobH3290 saidH559 to SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Ye have troubledH5916 meH413, to make meH413 to stinkH887 among the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776, among the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522: and, I beingH4962 fewH4557 in numberH4557, they will gatherH622 themselvesH622 togetherH622 againstH5921 meH413 and smiteH5221 meH413; and I shall be destroyedH8045, I and my houseH1004. 31And they saidH559, Should he dealH6213 with our sisterH269 as with an harlotH2181?
