Genesis 38

Darby Bible

1And it came to pass at that timeH6256, that JudahH3063 wentH3381 downH3381 from his brethren, and turnedH5186 in to a manH376 of Adullam whose nameH8034 was HirahH2437. 2And JudahH3063 sawH7200 there the daughterH1323 of a Canaanitish manH376 whose nameH8034 was ShuaH7770; and he tookH3947 her, and wentH935 in to her. 3And she conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121; and he calledH7121 his nameH8034 ErH6147. 4And she againH5750 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121, and she calledH7121 his nameH8034 OnanH209. 5And againH5750 she boreH3205 a sonH1121, and she calledH7121 his nameH8034 ShelahH7956; and he was at Chezib when she boreH3205 him. 6And JudahH3063 tookH3947 a wifeH802 for ErH6147 his firstbornH1060, and her nameH8034 was TamarH8559. 7And ErH6147, Judah's firstbornH1060, wasH1961 wickedH7451 in the sight of Jehovah, and Jehovah slew him. 8Then JudahH3063 saidH559 to OnanH209, GoH935 in to thy brother's wifeH802, and fulfil to her the brother-in-law's duty, and raiseH6965 up seedH2233 to thy brotherH251. 9But when OnanH209 knewH3045 that the seedH2233 should not beH1961 his own, it cameH935 to pass when he wentH935 in to his brother's wifeH802, that he spilled [it] on the groundH776, in order to giveH5414 no seedH2233 to his brotherH251. 10And the thing which he did was evilH7489 in the sight of Jehovah, and he slew him alsoH1571. 11And JudahH3063 saidH559 to TamarH8559 his daughter-in-law, RemainH3427 a widowH490 in thy father's houseH1004, until ShelahH7956 my sonH1121 is grownH1431; for he saidH559, LestH6435 he dieH4191 alsoH1571, as his brethren. And TamarH8559 went and remainedH3427 in her father's houseH1004. 12And as the daysH3117 were multipliedH7235, Judah's wifeH802, the daughterH1323 of ShuaH7770, diedH4191. And JudahH3063 was comfortedH5162, and he wentH5927 up to his sheep-shearers, to TimnahH8553, he and his friendH7453 HirahH2437 the AdullamiteH5726. 13And it was toldH5046 TamarH8559, sayingH559, Behold thy father-in-law is goingH5927 up to TimnahH8553 to shearH1494 his sheepH6629. 14And she putH5414 the garmentsH899 of her widowhoodH491 off from her, and coveredH3680 herself with a veilH6809, and wrapped herself, and satH3427 in the entry of Enaim, which is on the wayH1870 to TimnahH8553; for she sawH7200 that ShelahH7956 was grownH1431, and she was not givenH5414 to him as wifeH802. 15And JudahH3063 sawH7200 her, and took her for a harlot; because she had coveredH3680 her faceH6440. 16And he turnedH5186 asideH5186 to her by the wayH1870, and saidH559, ComeH935, I pray thee, let me goH935 in to thee; for he did not knowH3045 that she was his daughter-in-law. And she saidH559, What wilt thou giveH5414 me, that thou mayest comeH935 in to me? 17And he saidH559, I will sendH7971 [thee] a kid of the goatsH5795 from the flockH6629. And she saidH559, Wilt thou giveH5414 [me] a pledgeH6162, until thou sendH7971 it? 18And he saidH559, What pledgeH6162 shall I giveH5414 thee? And she saidH559, Thy signet, and thy lace, and thy staffH4294 which is in thy handH3027. And he gaveH5414 [it] her, and wentH935 in to her; and she conceivedH2029 by him. 19And she aroseH6965 and went awayH5493; and she laid by her veilH6809 from her, and putH3847 on the garmentsH899 of her widowhoodH491. 20And JudahH3063 sentH7971 the kid of the goatsH5795 by the handH3027 of his friendH7453 the AdullamiteH5726, to receiveH3947 the pledgeH6162 from the woman's handH3027; but he foundH4672 her not. 21And he askedH7592 the menH376 of her placeH4725, sayingH559, WhereH346 is the prostitute that wasH1961 at Enaim, by the way-side? And they saidH559, There wasH1961 no prostitute hereH2088. 22And he returnedH7725 to JudahH3063, and saidH559, I have not foundH4672 her; and alsoH1571 the menH376 of the placeH4725 saidH559, No prostitute has beenH1961 hereH2088. 23Then JudahH3063 saidH559, Let her takeH3947 [it] for herself, lestH6435 we beH1961 put to shame. Behold, I sentH7971 this kid, and thou hast not foundH4672 her. 24And it came to pass about threeH7969 monthsH2320 after, that it wasH1961 toldH5046 JudahH3063, sayingH559, TamarH8559 thy daughter-in-law has committed fornication, and behold, she is alsoH1571 with child by fornication. And JudahH3063 saidH559, BringH3318 her forthH3318, that she may beH1961 burnedH8313. 25WhenH834 she was broughtH3318 forthH3318, she sentH7971 to her father-in-law, sayingH559, By the manH376 to whom these [belong] am I with child; and she saidH559, AcknowledgeH5234, I pray thee, whose are this signet, and this lace, and this staffH4294. 26And JudahH3063 acknowledged [them], and saidH559, She is moreH4480 righteousH6663 than I, because I have not givenH5414 her to ShelahH7956 my sonH1121. And he knewH3045 her againH5750 no moreH4480. 27And it came to pass at the timeH6256 of her delivery, that behold, twinsH8380 wereH1961 in her wombH990. 28And it came to pass when she broughtH3318 forthH3318, that oneH2088 stretched out [his] handH3027, and the midwife tookH3947 it and boundH7194 round his handH3027 a scarletH8144 thread, sayingH559, This came out firstH7223. 29And it came to pass as he drew backH7725 his handH3027, that behold, his brotherH251 came out; and she saidH559, HowH4100 hast thou brokenH6555 forthH3318! on thee beH1961 the breachH6556! And they calledH7121 his nameH8034 Pherez. 30And afterwards cameH3318 out his brotherH251, round whose handH3027 was the scarletH8144 thread; and they calledH7121 his nameH8034 ZerahH2226.
