Genesis 34

Now DinahH1783, the daughterH1323 LeahH3812 had borneH3205 to JacobH3290, went outH3318 to visitH7200 the daughtersH1323 of the landH776. 2When ShechemH7927 sonH1121 of HamorH2544 the HiviteH2340, the princeH5387 of the regionH776, sawH7200 herH853, he tookH3947 herH853 and layH7901 with herH854 by forceH6031. 3And his soulH5315 was drawnH1692 to DinahH1783, the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290. He lovedH157 the young girlH5291 and spoke to her tenderlyH1696H5921H3820H5291. 4So ShechemH7927H413 toldH559 his fatherH1H559 HamorH2544, “GetH3947 me thisH2063 girlH3207 as a wifeH802.”

JacobH3290 heardH8085 thatH3588 Shechem had defiledH2930 his daughterH1323 DinahH1783, but since his sonsH1121 wereH1961 withH854 his livestockH4735 in the fieldH7704, heH3290 remained silentH2790 about it untilH5704 they returnedH935. 6Meanwhile, Shechem’sH7927H413 fatherH1 HamorH2544 cameH3318 to speakH1696 withH854 JacobH3290. 7When Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121 heard what had happenedH8085, they returnedH935 fromH4480 the fieldH7704. They were filled withH3966 griefH6087H582 and furyH2734, becauseH3588 Shechem had committedH6213 an outrageH5039 in IsraelH34781 by lyingH7901 withH853 Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323—a thingH3651 that should notH3808 be doneH6213.

But HamorH2544 saidH1696 to themH854H559, “My sonH1121 ShechemH7927 longs forH2836H5315 your daughterH1323. PleaseH4994 giveH5414 herH853 to him as his wifeH802. 9Intermarry with usH2859H854; giveH5414 us your daughtersH1323 and takeH3947 our daughtersH1323 for yourselves. 10You may settleH3427 among usH854, and the landH776 will beH1961 open to youH6440. Live hereH3427, move about freelyH5503, and acquire your own propertyH270.”

Then ShechemH7927 saidH559 toH413 Dinah’s fatherH1H413 and brothersH251, “Grant me this favorH4672H2580H5869, and I will giveH5414 you whateverH834 you askH559H413. 12DemandH7235 a highH5921H3966 dowryH4119 and an expensive giftH4976, and I will give youH5414 whateverH834 you askH559H413. Only giveH5414 me the girlH5291 as my wifeH802!”

The Revenge of Dinah’s Brothers

But becauseH834 Shechem had defiledH2930 their sisterH269 DinahH1783, Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121 answeredH6030 him and his fatherH1 HamorH2544 deceitfullyH4820H1696. 14“We cannotH3808H3201 doH6213 suchH2088 a thingH1697,” they saidH559. “To giveH5414 our sisterH269H376 to an uncircumcised manH6190H3588 would be a disgraceH2781H1931 to us. 15We will consentH225 to this on oneH389H2063 conditionH518, that you becomeH1961 circumcisedH4135 like usH3644—every one ofH3605 your malesH2145. 16Then we will giveH5414 you our daughtersH1323 andH853 takeH3947 your daughtersH1323 for ourselves. We will dwellH3427 among youH854 and becomeH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971. 17But ifH518 you will notH3808 agreeH8085H413 to be circumcisedH4135, then we will takeH3947 our sisterH1323 and goH1980.”

Their offerH1697H5869 seemed goodH3190 to HamorH2544H5869 and hisH2544 sonH1121 ShechemH7927. 19The young manH5288, whoH1931 was the most respectedH3513 of allH3605 his father’sH1 householdH1004, did notH3808 hesitateH309 to fulfillH6213 this requestH1697, becauseH3588 he was delightedH2654 with Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323.

So HamorH2544 and his sonH1121 ShechemH7927 wentH935 toH413 the gateH8179 of their cityH5892 and addressedH1696H413 the menH582 of their cityH5892H559: 21“TheseH428 menH582 are at peaceH8003H1992 with usH854. Let them liveH3427 and tradeH5503 in our landH776; indeedH2009, it is largeH7342H3027 enough for themH6440. Let us takeH3947 their daughtersH1323 in marriageH802 and giveH5414 our daughtersH1323 to them. 22But onlyH389 on this conditionH2063 will the menH582 agreeH225 to dwellH3427 with usH854 and beH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971: if allH3605 our menH2145 are circumcisedH4135 asH834 they areH1992H4135. 23Will notH3808 their livestockH4735, their possessionsH7075, and allH3605 theirH1992 animalsH929 become ours? OnlyH389 let us consentH225 to them, and they will dwellH3427 among usH854.”

All the menH3605 who went outH3318 of the cityH5892 gateH8179 listenedH8085 toH413 HamorH2544H413 and his sonH1121 ShechemH7927, and everyH3605 maleH2145H3605 of the cityH3318H8179H5892 was circumcisedH4135.

ThreeH7992 days laterH3117, whileH1961 they wereH1961 still in painH3510, twoH8147 of Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121 (Dinah’sH1783H376 brothersH251 SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878) tookH3947 their swordsH2719, wentH935 intoH5921 the unsuspectingH983 cityH5892, and slaughteredH2026 everyH3605 maleH2145. 26They killedH2026H6310 HamorH2544 and his sonH1121 ShechemH7927 with their swordsH2719, tookH3947 DinahH1783 out of Shechem’sH7927 houseH1004, and went awayH3318.

Jacob’sH3290 other sonsH1121 cameH935 uponH5921 the slaughterH2491 and lootedH962 the cityH5892, becauseH834 their sisterH269 had been defiledH2930. 28They tookH3947 their flocksH6629 andH853 herdsH1241 andH853 donkeysH2543, and everything elseH834 in the cityH5892 or in the fieldH7704. 29They carried offH7617 allH3605 their possessionsH2428 andH853 womenH802 andH853 childrenH2945, and they plunderedH962 everythingH3605 in their housesH1004.

Then JacobH3290 saidH559 toH413 SimeonH8095H413 and LeviH3878, “You have brought troubleH5916 upon meH853 by making me a stenchH887 to the CanaanitesH3669 and PerizzitesH6522, the peopleH3427 of this landH776. WeH589 are fewH4962 in numberH4557; if they uniteH622 against meH5921 and attack meH5221, IH589 and my householdH1004 will be destroyedH8045.”

But they repliedH559, “Should he have treatedH6213 our sisterH269 like a prostituteH2181?”
