The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons
1Now 1DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of LeahH3812, whomH834 she had borneH3205 to JacobH3290, wentH3318 out to 2visitH7200 the daughtersH1323 of the landH776. 2When ShechemH7927 the sonH1121 of HamorH2544 3the HiviteH2340, the princeH5387 of the landH776, sawH7200 her, he tookH3947 her and layH7901 with her 4by forceH6031. 35He was deeplyH1692 attractedH1692 to DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290, and he lovedH157 the girlH5291 and 6spokeH1696 tenderlyH3820 to her. 4So ShechemH7927 7spokeH559 to his fatherH1 HamorH2544, sayingH559, “GetH3947 me thisH2088 youngH3207 girlH3207 for a wifeH802.” 5Now JacobH3290 heardH8085 that he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 his daughterH1323; but his sonsH1121 were with his livestockH4735 in the fieldH7704, so JacobH3290 keptH2790 silentH2790 untilH5704 they cameH935 in. 6Then HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 wentH3318 out to JacobH3290 to speakH1696 with him. 7Now the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 in from the fieldH7704 when they heardH8085 it; and the menH376 were grievedH6087, and they were veryH3966 angryH2734 becauseH3588 he had doneH6213 a 89disgracefulH5039 thingH5039 in IsraelH3478 10by lyingH7901 with Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323, for suchH3651 a thingH3651 ought not to be doneH6213.
8But HamorH2544 spokeH1696 with them, sayingH559, “The soulH5315 of my sonH1121 ShechemH7927 longsH2836 for your daughterH1323; pleaseH4994 giveH5414 her to him 11in marriageH802. 9IntermarryH2859 with us; giveH5414 your daughtersH1323 to us and takeH3947 our daughtersH1323 for yourselves. 10Thus you shall 12liveH3427 with us, and 13the landH776 shall be open beforeH6440 you; 14liveH3427 and 15tradeH5503 in it and 16acquireH270 propertyH270 in it.” 11ShechemH7927 also saidH559 to her fatherH1 and to her brothersH251, “If I findH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869, then I will giveH5414 whateverH834 you sayH559 to me. 12AskH7235 me ever soH3966 muchH7235H3966 bridalH4119 paymentH4119 and giftH4976, and I will giveH5414 according as you sayH559 to me; but giveH5414 me the girlH5291 17in marriageH802.”
13But Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121 answeredH6030 ShechemH7927 and his fatherH1 HamorH2544 with deceitH4820, becauseH834 he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 their sisterH269. 14They saidH559 to them, “We cannotH3201H3808 doH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697, to giveH5414 our sisterH269 to 18oneH376 whoH834 is uncircumcisedH6190, for that would be a disgraceH2781 to us. 15OnlyH389 on thisH2088 condition will we consentH225 to you: ifH518 you will becomeH1961 likeH3644 us, in that everyH3605 maleH2145 of you be circumcisedH4135, 16then we will giveH5414 our daughtersH1323 to you, and we will takeH3947 your daughtersH1323 for ourselves, and we will 19liveH3427 with you and becomeH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971. 17But ifH518 you will not listenH8085 to us to be circumcisedH4135, then we will takeH3947 our daughterH1323 and goH1980.”
18Now their wordsH1697 seemedH3190 20reasonableH3190 to HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927, Hamor’sH2544 sonH1121. 19The youngH5288 manH5288 did not delayH309 to doH6213 the thingH1697, becauseH3588 he was delightedH2654 with Jacob’sH3290 daughterH1323. Now he was moreH4480 respectedH3513 thanH4480 allH3605 the householdH1004 of his fatherH1. 20So HamorH2544 and his sonH1121 ShechemH7927 cameH935 to the 21gateH8179 of their cityH5892 and spokeH1696 to the menH376 of their cityH5892, sayingH559, 21“TheseH428 menH376 are 22friendlyH8003 with us; therefore let them 23liveH3427 in the landH776 and tradeH5503 in it, for beholdH2009, the landH776 is 24largeH7342H3027 enoughH3027 for them. Let us takeH3947 their daughtersH1323 25in marriageH802, and giveH5414 our daughtersH1323 to them. 22OnlyH389 on thisH2088 condition will the menH376 consentH225 to us to 26liveH3427 with us, to becomeH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971: that everyH3605 maleH2145 among us be circumcisedH4135 as they are circumcisedH4135. 23Will not their livestockH4735 and their propertyH7075 and allH3605 their animalsH929 be ours? OnlyH389 let us consentH225 to them, and they will 27liveH3427 with us.” 2428AllH3605 who wentH3318 out of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892 listenedH8085 to HamorH2544 and to his sonH1121 ShechemH7927, and everyH3605 maleH2145 was circumcisedH4135, allH3605 who wentH3318 out of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892.
25Now it cameH1961 about on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, when they were in painH3510, that twoH8147 of Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121, 29SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Dinah’sH1783 brothersH251, eachH376 tookH3947 his swordH2719 and cameH935 upon the cityH5892 unawaresH983, and killedH2026 everyH3605 maleH2145. 26They killedH2026 HamorH2544 and his sonH1121 ShechemH7927 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and tookH3947 DinahH1783 from Shechem’sH7927 houseH1004, and wentH3318 forthH3318. 27Jacob’sH3290 sonsH1121 cameH935 upon the slainH2491 and lootedH962 the cityH5892, becauseH834 they had defiledH2930 their sisterH269. 28They tookH3947 their flocksH6629 and their herdsH1241 and their donkeysH2543, and that whichH834 was in the cityH5892 and that whichH834 was in the fieldH7704; 29and they capturedH7617 and lootedH962 allH3605 their wealthH2428 and allH3605 their littleH2945 onesH2945 and their wivesH802, even allH3605 that was in the housesH1004. 30Then JacobH3290 saidH559 to SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, “You have 30broughtH5916 troubleH5916 on me by 31makingH887 me odiousH887 among the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776, among 32the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522; and 3334my menH4962 being fewH4962 in numberH4557, they will gatherH622 together againstH5921 me and 35attackH5221 me and I will be destroyedH8045, I and my householdH1004.” 31But they saidH559, “Should he 36treatH6213 our sisterH269 as a harlotH2181?”
