Genesis 42

Darby Bible

1And JacobH3290 sawH7200 that there was grainH7668 in EgyptH4714, and JacobH3290 saidH559 to his sonsH1121, WhyH4100 do ye lookH7200 one upon another? 2And he saidH559, Behold, I have heardH8085 that there is grainH7668 in EgyptH4714; goH3381 down thither and buyH7666 [grainH7668] for us from thence, in order that we may liveH2421, and not dieH4191. 3And Joseph's tenH6235 brethren wentH3381 downH3381 to buyH7666 [grainH1250] out of EgyptH4714. 4But BenjaminH1144, Joseph's brotherH251, JacobH3290 sentH7971 not with his brethren; for he saidH559, LestH6435 mischief may befall him. 5So the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 cameH935 to buyH7666 [grainH7666] among those that cameH935; for the famineH7458 wasH1961 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 6And JosephH3130, he was the governor over the landH776 — he it was that soldH7666 [the corn] to all the peopleH5971 of the landH776. And Joseph's brethren cameH935 and bowedH7812 downH7812 to him, the faceH639 to the earthH776. 7And JosephH3130 sawH7200 his brethren, and knew them; but he made himself strange to them, and spokeH1696 roughly to them, and saidH559 to them, Whence comeH935 ye? And they saidH559, From the landH776 of CanaanH3667, to buyH7666 foodH400. 8And JosephH3130 knew his brethren, but they did not know him. 9And JosephH3130 rememberedH2142 the dreamsH2472 that he had dreamt of them; and he saidH559 to them, Ye are spiesH7270: to seeH7200 the exposed places of the landH776 ye are comeH935. 10And they saidH559 to him, No, my lordH113; but to buyH7666 foodH400 are thy servantsH5650 comeH935. 11We are all oneH259 man's sonsH1121; we are honest: thy servantsH5650 are not spiesH7270. 12And he saidH559 to them, No; but to seeH7200 the exposed places of the landH776 are ye comeH935. 13And they saidH559, Thy servantsH5650 were twelve brethren, sonsH1121 of oneH259 manH376, in the landH776 of CanaanH3667; and behold, the youngestH6996 is this dayH3117 with our fatherH1, and oneH259 is not. 14And JosephH3130 saidH559 to them, That is it that I have spokenH1696 to you, sayingH559, Ye are spiesH7270. 15By this ye shall be put to the proof: as PharaohH6547 livesH2416, ye shall not goH3318 forthH3318 hence, unless your youngestH6996 brotherH251 comeH935 hither! 16SendH7971 oneH259 of you, that he may fetch your brotherH251, but ye shall be imprisonedH631, and your wordsH1697 shall be put to the proof, whether the truthH571 is in you; and if not, as PharaohH6547 livesH2416, ye are spiesH7270. 17And he put them in custodyH4929 threeH7969 daysH3117. 18And JosephH3130 saidH559 to them the thirdH7992 dayH3117, This do, that ye may liveH2421: I fearH3372 1GodH430. 19If ye are honest, let oneH259 of your brethren remain boundH631 in the houseH1004 of your prison, but goH935 ye, carry grainH7668 for the hunger of your householdsH1004; 20and bringH935 your youngestH6996 brotherH251 to me, in order that your wordsH1697 be verified, and that ye may not dieH4191. And they did soH3651. 21Then they saidH559 oneH376 to another, We are indeed guiltyH818 concerning our brotherH251, whose anguish of soulH5315 we sawH7200 whenH834 he besought us, and we did not hearken; thereforeH3651 this distressH6869 is comeH935 upon us. 22And ReubenH7205 answered them, sayingH559, Did I not speak to you, sayingH559, Do not sinH2398 against the ladH3206? But ye did not hearken; and now behold, his bloodH1818 alsoH1571 is requiredH1875. 23And they did not knowH3045 that JosephH3130 understood, for the interpreter was between them. 24And he turnedH7725 awayH7725 from them, and weptH1058. And he returnedH7725 to them, and spokeH1696 to them, and tookH3947 SimeonH8095 from among them, and boundH631 him before their eyesH5869. 25And JosephH3130 gaveH5414 orders to fillH4390 their vesselsH3627 with corn, and to restoreH7725 every man's moneyH3701 into his sackH8242, and to giveH5414 them provision for the wayH1870. And thusH3651 did they to them. 26And they loaded their asses with their grainH7668, and departed thence. 27And oneH259 of them openedH6605 his sackH572 to giveH5414 his ass food in the inn, and sawH7200 his moneyH3701, and behold, it was in the mouthH6310 of his sackH572. 28And he saidH559 to his brethren, My moneyH3701 is returnedH7725 [to me], and behold, it is even in my sackH572. And their heartH3820 failed [them], and they were afraid, sayingH559 oneH376 to another, What is this [that] 2GodH430 has done to us? 29And they cameH935 into the landH776 of CanaanH3667, to JacobH3290 their fatherH1, and toldH5046 him all that had befallen them, sayingH559, 30The manH376, the lordH113 of the landH776, spokeH1696 roughly to us, and treated us as spiesH7270 of the landH776. 31And we saidH559 to him, We are honest; we are not spiesH7270: 32we are twelve brethren, sonsH1121 of our fatherH1; oneH259 is not, and the youngestH6996 is this dayH3117 with our fatherH1 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 33And the manH376, the lordH113 of the landH776, saidH559 to us, Hereby shall I knowH3045 that ye are honest: leave oneH259 of your brethren with me, and takeH3947 [for] the hunger of your householdsH1004, and go, 34and bringH935 your youngestH6996 brotherH251 to me, and I shall knowH3045 that ye are not spiesH7270, but are honest. Your brotherH251 will I giveH5414 up to you; and ye may trade in the landH776. 35And it came to pass as they emptied their sacksH8242, that behold, every manH376 had his bundle of moneyH3701 in his sackH8242; and they sawH7200 their bundles of moneyH3701, they and their fatherH1, and wereH1961 afraidH3372. 36And JacobH3290 their fatherH1 saidH559 to them, Ye have bereavedH7921 me of children: JosephH3130 is not, and SimeonH8095 is not, and ye will takeH3947 BenjaminH1144! All these things are against me. 37And ReubenH7205 spoke to his fatherH1, sayingH559, Slay my twoH8147 sonsH1121 if I bringH935 him not backH7725 to thee: giveH5414 him into my handH3027, and I will bringH935 him to thee again. 38But he saidH559, My sonH1121 shall not goH3381 down with you, for his brotherH251 is deadH4191, and he aloneH905 is leftH7604; and if mischief should befall him by the wayH1870 in which ye goH3381, then would ye bringH3381 down my grey hairsH7872 with sorrowH3015 to SheolH7585.
