Matthew 5
Darby Bible
1But seeingG3708 the crowdsG3793, he wentG305 up into the mountainG3735, and having satG2523 downG2523, his disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to him; 2and, having openedG455 his mouthG4750, he taughtG1321 them, sayingG3004, 3Blessed [areG1510] the poorG4434 in spiritG4151, for theirs isG1510 the kingdomG932 of the heavensG3772. 4Blessed they that mournG3996, for they shall be comfortedG3870. 5Blessed the meek, for they shall inheritG2816 the earthG1093. 6Blessed they who hungerG3983 and thirstG1372 after righteousnessG1343, for they shall be filledG5526. 7Blessed the mercifulG1655, for they shall find mercyG1653. 8Blessed the pureG2513 in heartG2588, for they shall seeG3708 1GodG2316. 9Blessed the peace-makers, for they shall be calledG2564 sonsG5207 of 2GodG2316. 10Blessed they who areG1510 persecutedG1377 on account of righteousnessG1343, for theirs isG1510 the kingdomG932 of the heavensG3772. 11Blessed areG1510 ye whenG3752 they may reproach and persecuteG1377 you, and sayG3004 every wickedG4190 thing against you, lyingG5574, for my sakeG1752. 12RejoiceG5463 and exultG21, for your rewardG3408 is greatG4183 in the heavensG3772; for thusG3779 have they persecutedG1377 the prophetsG4396 who were before you. 13Ye areG1510 the saltG217 of the earthG1093; but if the saltG217 have becomeG3471 insipid, wherewith shall it beG1510 saltedG233? It isG1510 noG3762 longerG2089 fit for anything but to beG1510 castG906 out and to beG1510 trodden under foot by menG444. 14Ye areG1510 the lightG5457 of the worldG2889: a cityG4172 situated on the top of a mountainG3735 cannot beG1510 hidG2928. 15Nor do [men] light a lampG3088 and putG5087 it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shinesG2989 for all who are in the houseG3614. 16Let your lightG5457 thusG3779 shineG2989 before menG444, so that they may seeG3708 your upright worksG2041, and glorifyG1392 your FatherG3962 who is in the heavensG3772. 17ThinkG3543 not that I am comeG2064 to make void the lawG3551 or the prophetsG4396; I am not comeG2064 to make void, but to fulfil. 18For verily I sayG3004 unto you, Until the heavenG3772 and the earthG1093 passG3928 awayG3928, oneG1520 iota or oneG1520 tittle shall in no wise passG3928 from the lawG3551 till all comeG1096 to passG3928. 19Whosoever then shall do away with oneG1520 of these leastG1646 commandmentsG1785, and shall teachG1321 menG444 so, shall be calledG2564 leastG1646 in the kingdomG932 of the heavensG3772; but whosoever shall practise and teachG1321 [them], he shall be calledG2564 greatG3173 in the kingdomG932 of the heavensG3772. 20For I sayG3004 unto you, that unless your righteousnessG1343 surpass [that] of the scribesG1122 and PhariseesG5330, ye shall in no wise enterG1525 into the kingdomG932 of the heavensG3772. 21Ye have heardG191 that it wasG1510 said to the ancientsG744, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall beG1510 subject to the judgmentG2920. 22But I sayG3004 unto you, that every oneG3739 that isG1510 lightly angryG3710 with his brotherG80 shall beG1510 subject to the judgmentG2920; but whosoever shall sayG3004 to his brotherG80, Raca, shall beG1510 subject to [beG1510 called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall sayG3004, Fool, shall beG1510 subject to the penalty of the hellG1067 of fireG4442. 23If thereforeG3767 thou shouldest offerG4374 thy giftG1435 at the altarG2379, and there shouldest rememberG3403 that thy brotherG80 has somethingG5100 against thee, 24leaveG863 there thy giftG1435 before the altarG2379, and firstG4413 goG5217, be reconciled to thy brotherG80, and then comeG2064 and offerG4374 thy giftG1435. 25Make friends with thine adverse party quicklyG5035, whilst thou art in the wayG3598 with him; lest some time the adverse party deliverG3860 thee to the judgeG2923, and the judgeG2923 deliverG3860 thee to the officerG5257, and thou beG1510 castG906 into prisonG5438. 26Verily I sayG3004 to thee, Thou shalt in no wise comeG1831 out thence till thou hast paidG591 the lastG2078 farthing. 27Ye have heardG191 that it has been said, Thou shalt not commitG3431 adulteryG3431. 28But I sayG3004 unto you, that every one who looksG991 upon a womanG1135 to lust after her has alreadyG2235 committedG3431 adulteryG3431 with her in his heartG2588. 29But if thy rightG1188 eyeG3788 be a snare to thee, pluck it out and castG906 it from thee: for it is profitableG4851 for thee that oneG1520 of thy membersG3196 perishG622, and not thy wholeG3650 bodyG4983 be castG906 into hellG1067. 30And if thy rightG1188 handG5495 be a snare to thee, cutG1581 it off and castG906 it from thee: for it is profitableG4851 for thee that oneG1520 of thy membersG3196 perishG622, and not thy wholeG3650 bodyG4983 be castG906 into hellG1067. 31It has been said too, Whosoever shall put awayG630 his wifeG1135, let him giveG1325 her a letter of divorceG647. 32But I sayG3004 unto you, that whosoever shall put awayG630 his wifeG1135, except for cause of fornication, makesG4160 her commitG3431 adulteryG3431, and whosoever marriesG1060 oneG3739 that is put awayG630 commitsG3429 adulteryG3431. 33AgainG3825, ye have heardG191 that it has been said to the ancientsG744, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt renderG591 to the LordG2962 what thou hast sworn. 34But I sayG3004 unto you, Do not swearG3660 at all; neither by the heavenG3772, because it isG1510 [the] throneG2362 of 3GodG2316; 35nor by the earthG1093, because it isG1510 [the] footstoolG5286 of his feetG4228; nor by JerusalemG2414, because it isG1510 [the] cityG4172 of the greatG3173 KingG935. 36Neither shalt thou swearG3660 by thy headG2776, because thou canst not makeG4160 oneG1520 hairG2359 whiteG3022 or blackG3189. 37But let your wordG3056 beG1510 Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what isG1510 more than these isG1510 from evilG4190. 38Ye have heardG191 that it has been said, EyeG3788 for eyeG3788 and toothG3599 for toothG3599. 39But I sayG3004 unto you, not to resistG436 evilG4190; but whoever shall strike thee on thy rightG1188 cheekG4600, turnG4762 to him alsoG2532 the otherG243; 40and to him that would go to lawG2919 with thee and takeG2983 thy body coat, leaveG863 him thy cloakG2440 alsoG2532. 41And whoever will compel thee to goG5217 oneG1520 mile, goG5217 with him twoG1417. 42To him that asksG154 of thee giveG1325, and from him that desiresG2309 to borrow of thee turnG654 not awayG654. 43Ye have heardG191 that it has been said, Thou shalt loveG25 thy neighbour and hateG3404 thine enemyG2190. 44But I sayG3004 unto you, LoveG25 your enemiesG2190, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and prayG4336 for those who [insult you and] persecuteG1377 you, 45that ye may be [the] sonsG5207 of your FatherG3962 who is in [the] heavensG3772; for he makes his sunG2246 rise on evilG4190 and goodG18, and sends rainG1026 on justG1342 and unjustG94. 46For if ye should loveG25 those who loveG25 you, what rewardG3408 have ye? Do not alsoG2532 the tax-gatherers the sameG846? 47And if ye should salute your brethren onlyG3440, what do ye extraordinary? Do not alsoG2532 the Gentiles the sameG846? 48BeG1510 ye thereforeG3767 perfectG5046 as your heavenlyG3770 FatherG3962 isG1510 perfectG5046.
