Matthew 14
Darby Bible
1At that timeG2540 HerodG2264 the tetrarch heardG191 of the fame of JesusG2424, 2and saidG3004 to his servantsG3816, This isG1510 JohnG2491 the baptistG910: he isG1510 risenG1453 from the deadG3498, and because of this these worksG1754 of powerG1411 display their force in him. 3For HerodG2264 had seizedG2902 JohnG2491, and had boundG1210 him and putG659 him in prisonG5438 on accountG1223 of HerodiasG2266 the wifeG1135 of PhilipG5376 his brotherG80. 4For JohnG2491 saidG3004 to him, It is not lawfulG1832 for thee to have her. 5And [while] desiringG2309 to killG615 him, he fearedG5399 the crowdG3793, because they heldG2192 him for a prophetG4396. 6But when Herod's birthdayG1077 was celebrated, the daughterG2364 of HerodiasG2266 dancedG3738 before them, and pleasedG700 HerodG2264; 7whereupon he promised with oathG3727 to giveG1325 her whatsoever she should askG154. 8But she, being set on by her motherG3384, saysG5346, GiveG1325 me hereG5602 upon a dish the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the baptistG910. 9And the kingG935 was grievedG3076; but on accountG1223 of the oathsG3727, and those lying at table with [him], he commandedG2753 [it] to be givenG1325. 10And he sentG3992 and beheadedG607 JohnG2491 in the prisonG5438; 11and his headG2776 was broughtG5342 upon a dish, and was givenG1325 to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her motherG3384. 12And his disciplesG3101 cameG2064 and tookG142 the bodyG4430 and buriedG2290 it, and cameG2064 and brought wordG518 to JesusG2424. 13And JesusG2424, having heardG191 it, went awayG575 thence by shipG4143 to a desert placeG5117 apart. And the crowdsG3793 having heardG191 [of it] followedG190 him on foot from the citiesG4172. 14And goingG1831 out he sawG3708 a greatG4183 crowdG3793, and was moved with compassionG4697 about them, and healedG2323 their infirm. 15But when evenG2532 wasG1510 comeG1096, his disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to him sayingG3004, The placeG5117 isG1510 desert, and [much of] the [day] timeG5610 alreadyG2235 goneG565 by; dismiss the crowdsG3793, that they may goG565 into the villagesG2968 and buyG59 foodG1033 for themselves. 16But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, They have no needG5532 to goG565: giveG1325 ye them to eatG2068. 17But they sayG3004 to him, We have not hereG5602 save fiveG4002 loavesG740 and twoG1417 fishes. 18And he saidG3004, BringG5342 them hereG5602 to me. 19And having commandedG2753 the crowdsG3793 to reclineG347 upon the grassG5528, having takenG2983 the fiveG4002 loavesG740 and the twoG1417 fishes, he lookedG308 up to heavenG3772, and blessedG2127: and having brokenG2806 the loavesG740, he gaveG1325 [them] to the disciplesG3101, and the disciplesG3101 [gaveG1325 them] to the crowdsG3793. 20And all ateG2068 and were filledG5526, and they tookG142 up what was over and above of fragmentsG2801 twelveG1427 hand-baskets fullG4134. 21But those that had eatenG2068 wereG1510 about fiveG4000 thousandG4000 menG435, besides womenG1135 and childrenG3813. 22And immediatelyG2112 he compelledG315 the disciplesG3101 to goG4254 on board shipG4143, and to goG4254 on before him to the otherG4008 sideG4008, until he should have dismissedG630 the crowdsG3793. 23And having dismissedG630 the crowdsG3793, he wentG305 up into the mountainG3735 apart to prayG4336. And when evenG2532 wasG1510 comeG1096, he wasG1510 aloneG3441 there, 24but the shipG4143 wasG1510 alreadyG2235 in the middleG3319 of the seaG2281 tossed by the waves, for the windG417 wasG1510 contraryG1727. 25But in the fourth watchG5438 of the nightG3571 he went off to them, walkingG4043 on the seaG2281. 26And the disciplesG3101, seeingG3708 him walkingG4043 on the seaG2281, wereG1510 troubledG5015, sayingG3004, It isG1510 an apparition. And they criedG2896 out through fearG5401. 27But JesusG2424 immediately spokeG2980 to them, sayingG3004, TakeG2293 courageG2293; it isG1510 I: beG1510 not afraidG5399. 28And PeterG4074 answeringG611 him saidG3004, LordG2962, if it beG1510 thou, command me to comeG2064 to thee upon the watersG5204. 29And he saidG3004, ComeG2064. And PeterG4074, having descendedG2597 from the shipG4143, walkedG4043 upon the watersG5204 to goG2597 to JesusG2424. 30But seeingG991 the windG417 strongG2478 he was afraidG5399; and beginningG757 to sink he criedG2896 out, sayingG3004, LordG2962, saveG4982 me. 31And immediatelyG2112 JesusG2424 stretchedG1614 out his handG5495 and caught holdG1949 of him, and saysG3004 to him, O thou of little faith, whyG5101 didst thou doubt? 32And when they had goneG305 up into the shipG4143, the windG417 fell. 33But those in the shipG4143 came and did homage to him, sayingG3004, TrulyG230 thou art 1God's SonG5207. 34And having crossed over they cameG2064 to the landG1093 of GennesaretG1082. 35And when the menG435 of that placeG5117 recognised him, they sentG649 to that wholeG3650 country around, and they broughtG4374 to him all that were ill, 36and besought him that they might onlyG3440 touchG681 the hem of his garmentG2440; and as manyG3745 as touchedG681 were made thoroughly well.
