Luke 12
American Standard Version
1In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitudeG3793 wereG1510 gatheredG1996 togetherG1996, insomuch that they trod oneG240 upon another, he beganG757 to sayG3004 unto his disciplesG3101 firstG4413 of all, BewareG4337 ye of the leavenG2219 of the PhariseesG5330, which isG1510 hypocrisyG5272. 2But there isG1510 nothing covered up, that shall not beG1510 revealedG601; and hid, that shall not beG1510 knownG1097. 3Wherefore whatsoever ye have saidG3004 in the darknessG4653 shall be heardG191 in the lightG5457; and what ye have spokenG2980 in the earG3775 in the innerG5009 chambers shall be proclaimedG2784 upon the housetopsG1430. 4And I sayG3004 unto you my friendsG5384, Be not afraidG5399 of them that killG615 the bodyG4983, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will warn you whom ye shall fearG5399: FearG5399 him, who after he hath killedG615 hath powerG1849 to cast into hellG1067; yea, I sayG3004 unto you, FearG5399 him. 6AreG1510 not fiveG4002 sparrowsG4765 soldG4453 for twoG1417 pence? and not oneG1520 of them isG1510 forgottenG1950 in the sight of GodG2316. 7But the very hairsG2359 of your headG2776 are all numberedG705. FearG5399 not: ye are of moreG4183 value than manyG4183 sparrowsG4765. 8And I sayG3004 unto you, Every oneG3739 who shall confessG3670 me before menG444, him shall the SonG5207 of manG444 alsoG2532 confessG3670 before the angelsG32 of GodG2316: 9but he that denieth me in the presenceG1799 of menG444 shall be deniedG720 in the presenceG1799 of the angelsG32 of GodG2316. 10And every oneG3739 who shall speakG3004 a wordG3056 against the SonG5207 of manG444, it shall be forgivenG863 him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 it shall not be forgivenG863. 11And whenG3752 they bringG1533 you before the synagoguesG4864, and the rulersG746, and the authoritiesG1849, be not anxiousG3309 howG4459 or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall sayG3004: 12for the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 shall teachG1321 you in that very hourG5610 what ye oughtG1163 to sayG3004.
13And oneG5100 out of the multitudeG3793 saidG3004 unto him, TeacherG1320, bid my brotherG80 divide the inheritanceG2817 with me. 14But he saidG3004 unto him, ManG444, who made me a judgeG2923 or a divider over you? 15And he saidG3004 unto them, Take heed, and keepG5442 yourselves from all covetousnessG4124: for a man’s lifeG2222 consisteth not in the abundanceG4052 of the thingsG3956 which he possesseth. 16And he spake a parableG3850 unto them, sayingG3004, The ground of a certainG5100 richG4145 manG444 brought forth plentifully: 17and he reasonedG1260 within himself, sayingG3004, What shall I do, because I have not whereG4226 to bestow my fruitsG2590? 18And he saidG3004, This will I do: I will pull down my barnsG596, and buildG3618 greaterG3173; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goodsG18. 19And I will sayG3004 to my soulG5590, SoulG5590, thou hast muchG4183 goodsG18 laid up for manyG4183 yearsG2094; take thine ease, eatG2068, drinkG4095, be merryG2165. 20But GodG2316 saidG3004 unto him, Thou foolishG878 oneG3739, this nightG3571 isG1510 thy soulG5590 required of thee; and the thingsG3778 which thou hast preparedG2090, whose shall they beG1510? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not richG4147 toward GodG2316.
22And he saidG3004 unto his disciplesG3101, Therefore I sayG3004 unto you, Be not anxiousG3309 for your lifeG5590, what ye shall eatG2068; nor yet for your bodyG4983, what ye shall putG1746 on. 23For the lifeG5590 isG1510 moreG4183 than the foodG5160, and the bodyG4983 than the raiment. 24ConsiderG2657 the ravens, that they sowG4687 not, neither reapG2325; which have no store-chamber nor barnG596; and GodG2316 feedeth them: of howG4214 muchG4214 moreG3123 value areG1510 ye than the birdsG4071! 25And which of you by being anxiousG3309 can addG4369 a cubit unto the measure of his life? 26If thenG3767 ye are not ableG1410 to do evenG3761 that which is leastG1646, whyG5101 are ye anxiousG3309 concerningG4012 the restG3062? 27ConsiderG2657 the liliesG2918, howG4459 they growG837: they toilG2872 not, neither do they spinG3514; yet I sayG3004 unto you, EvenG3761 SolomonG4672 in all his gloryG1391 was not arrayed like oneG1520 of these. 28But if GodG2316 doth so clothe the grassG5528 in the fieldG68, which to-day isG1510, and to-morrow isG1510 castG906 into the oven; howG4214 muchG4214 moreG3123 shall he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29And seekG2212 not ye what ye shall eatG2068, and what ye shall drinkG4095, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30For all these thingsG3778 do the nationsG1484 of the worldG2889 seekG1934 after: but your FatherG3962 knoweth that ye have needG5535 of these thingsG3778. 31Yet seekG2212 ye his kingdomG932, and these thingsG3778 shall be addedG4369 unto you. 32FearG5399 not, littleG3398 flockG4168; for it is your Father’s good pleasureG2106 to giveG1325 you the kingdomG932. 33SellG4453 that which ye have, and giveG1325 almsG1654; makeG4160 for yourselves purses which wax not oldG3822, a treasureG2344 in the heavensG3772 that faileth not, whereG3699 no thiefG2812 draweth near, neither mothG4597 destroyeth. 34For whereG3699 your treasureG2344 isG1510, there will your heartG2588 beG1510 alsoG2532.
35Let your loinsG3751 beG1510 girdedG4024 about, and your lampsG3088 burningG2545; 36and be ye yourselves like unto menG444 looking for their lordG2962, when he shall return from the marriageG1062 feastG1062; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway openG455 unto him. 37Blessed are those servantsG1401, whom the lordG2962 when he cometh shall findG2147 watchingG1127: verily I sayG3004 unto you, that he shall girdG4024 himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall comeG2064 and serveG1247 them. 38And if he shall comeG2064 in the secondG1208 watchG5438, and if in the thirdG5154, and findG2147 them so, blessed areG1510 those servants. 39But knowG1097 this, that if the master of the houseG3624 had knownG1097 in what hourG5610 the thiefG2812 was comingG2064, he would have watched, and not have leftG863 his houseG3624 to be brokenG1358 through. 40Be ye alsoG2532 readyG2092: for in an hourG5610 that ye thinkG1380 not the SonG5207 of manG444 cometh.
41And PeterG4074 saidG3004, LordG2962, speakest thou this parableG3850 unto us, or evenG2532 unto all? 42And the LordG2962 saidG3004, Who then isG1510 the faithfulG4103 and wiseG5429 stewardG3623, whom his lordG2962 shall setG2525 over his household, to giveG1325 them their portion of food in due seasonG2540? 43Blessed is that servantG1401, whom his lordG2962 whenG2064 he cometh shall findG2147 soG3779 doing. 44Of a truth I sayG3004 unto you, that he will setG2525 him over all that he hath. 45But if that servantG3816 shall sayG3004 in his heartG2588, My lordG2962 delayeth his comingG2064; and shall begin to beatG5180 the menservants and the maidservants, and to eatG2068 and drinkG4095, and to be drunken; 46the lordG2962 of that servantG1401 shall comeG2240 in a dayG2250 when he expecteth not, and in an hourG5610 when he knoweth not, and shall cutG1371 him asunder, and appoint his portionG3313 with the unfaithful. 47And that servantG1401, who knewG1097 his lord’sG2962 will, and madeG4160 not readyG2090, nor did according to his will, shall be beatenG1194 with manyG4183 stripes; 48but he that knewG1097 not, and did thingsG3956 worthyG514 of stripes, shall be beatenG1194 with fewG3641 stripes. And to whomsoever muchG4183 is givenG1325, of him shall muchG4183 be required: and to whom they commit muchG4183, of him will they askG154 the moreG4183.
49I cameG2064 to castG906 fireG4442 upon the earthG1093; and what do I desireG2309, if it is alreadyG2235 kindled? 50But I have a baptismG908 to be baptizedG907 with; and howG4459 am I straitened till it be accomplishedG5055! 51ThinkG1380 ye that I am comeG3854 to giveG1325 peaceG1515 in the earthG1093? I tellG3004 you, Nay; but ratherG235 division: 52for there shall beG1510 from henceforth fiveG4002 in oneG1520 houseG3624 dividedG1266, threeG5140 against twoG1417, and twoG1417 against threeG5140. 53They shall be dividedG1266, fatherG3962 against sonG5207, and sonG5207 against fatherG3962; motherG3384 against daughterG2364, and daughterG2364 against her motherG3384; motherG3384 in law against her daughterG2364 in law, and daughterG2364 in law against her motherG3384 in law.
54And he saidG3004 to the multitudesG3793 alsoG2532, WhenG3752 ye seeG3708 a cloudG3507 rising in the westG1424, straightway ye sayG3004, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to passG1096. 55And whenG3752 ye see a southG3558 windG3558 blowingG4154, ye sayG3004, There will beG1510 a scorching heatG2742; and it cometh to passG1096. 56Ye hypocritesG5273, ye know howG4459 to interpret the faceG4383 of the earthG1093 and the heavenG3772; but howG4459 is it that ye know not howG4459 to interpret this timeG2540? 57And whyG5101 evenG2532 of yourselves judgeG2919 ye not what is rightG1342? 58For as thou art goingG5217 with thine adversaryG476 before the magistrate, on the wayG3598 giveG1325 diligence to be quit of him; lest haply he drag thee unto the judgeG2923, and the judgeG2923 shall deliverG3860 thee to the officerG4233, and the officerG4233 shall castG906 thee into prisonG5438. 59I sayG3004 unto thee, Thou shalt by no means comeG1831 out thence, till thou have paidG591 the very lastG2078 mite.
