Acts 28
American Standard Version
1And when we were escaped, then we knewG1921 that the islandG3520 was calledG2564 Melita. 2And the barbarians showed us no common kindness: for they kindled a fireG4443, and receivedG4355 us all, because of the present rainG5205, and because of the coldG5592. 3But when PaulG3972 had gathered a bundle of sticks and laidG2007 them on the fireG4443, a viperG2191 cameG1831 out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his handG5495. 4And whenG5613 the barbarians sawG3708 the venomous creatureG2342 hangingG2910 from his handG5495, they saidG3004 oneG240 to another, No doubt this manG444 isG1510 a murdererG5406, whom, though he hath escaped from the seaG2281, yet Justice hath not suffered to liveG2198. 5Howbeit he shook off the creatureG2342 into the fireG4442, and took no harmG2556. 6But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen downG2667 deadG3498 suddenlyG869: but when they wereG1510 long in expectation and beheld nothingG3367 amiss comeG1096 to him, they changed their minds, and saidG3004 that he wasG1510 a godG2316.
7NowG1161 in the neighborhood of that placeG5117 were landsG5564 belonging to the chief man of the islandG3520, namedG3686 PubliusG4196; who received us, and entertainedG3579 us threeG5140 daysG2250 courteously. 8And it was so, that the fatherG3962 of PubliusG4196 lay sick of feverG4446 and dysentery: unto whom PaulG3972 enteredG1525 in, and prayedG4336, and layingG2007 his handsG5495 on him healedG2390 him. 9And when this was done, the restG3062 alsoG2532 that had diseases in the islandG3520 cameG4334, and were cured: 10who alsoG2532 honoredG5091 us with manyG4183 honorsG5091; and when we sailed, they putG2007 on board such thingsG4183 as we neededG5532.
11And after threeG5140 monthsG3376 we setG321 sailG321 in a shipG4143 of Alexandria which had winteredG3914 in the islandG3520, whose sign was The Twin Brothers. 12And touching at Syracuse, we tarried there threeG5140 daysG2250. 13And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after oneG1520 dayG2250 a southG3558 windG3558 sprang up, and on the second dayG2250 we cameG2064 to Puteoli; 14whereG3757 we foundG2147 brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them sevenG2033 daysG2250: and so we cameG2064 to RomeG4516. 15And from thence the brethren, when they heardG191 of us, cameG2064 to meetG529 us as farG891 as The Market of Appius and The ThreeG5140 Taverns; whom when PaulG3972 sawG3708, he thankedG2168 GodG2316, and tookG2983 courage.
16And whenG3753 we enteredG1525 into RomeG4516, PaulG3972 was suffered to abideG3306 by himself with the soldierG4757 that guardedG5442 him.
17And it cameG1096 to passG1096, that after threeG5140 daysG2250 he called togetherG4905 those that wereG1510 the chief of the JewsG2453: and when they wereG1510 comeG1096 togetherG4905, he saidG3004 unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the peopleG2992, or the customsG1485 of our fathersG3971, yet wasG1510 deliveredG3860 prisonerG1198 from JerusalemG2414 into the handsG5495 of the RomansG4514: 18who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no causeG156 of deathG2288 in me. 19But whenG5613 the JewsG2453 spake against it, I was constrained to appealG1941 unto Cæsar; not that I had aught whereof to accuseG2723 my nationG1484. 20For this causeG156 thereforeG3767 did I entreat you to seeG3708 and to speak with me: for because of the hopeG1680 of IsraelG2474 I am bound with this chainG254. 21And they saidG3004 unto him, We neither receivedG1209 lettersG1121 from Judæa concerningG4012 thee, nor did any of the brethren comeG3854 hither and reportG518 or speakG2980 any harm of thee. 22But we desire to hearG191 of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerningG4012 this sectG139, it isG1510 known to us that everywhereG3837 it isG1510 spokenG483 against.
23And when they had appointedG5021 him a dayG2250, they cameG2064 to him into his lodging in greatG4183 number; to whom he expounded the matter, testifyingG1263 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, and persuadingG3982 them concerningG4012 JesusG2424, both from the lawG3551 of MosesG3475 and from the prophetsG4396, from morningG4404 till eveningG2073. 24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that PaulG3972 had spokenG2980 oneG1520 word, WellG2573 spake the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 through IsaiahG2268 the prophetG4396 unto your fathersG3962, 26sayingG3004,
28BeG1510 it known thereforeG3767 unto you, that this salvation of GodG2316 isG1510 sentG649 unto the GentilesG1484: they will alsoG2532 hearG191. 291
30And he abode twoG1333 wholeG3650 yearsG1333 in his ownG2398 hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him, 31preachingG2784 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, and teachingG1321 the thingsG3956 concerningG4012 the LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547 with all boldnessG3954, none forbidding him.
