Acts 19
American Standard Version
1And it cameG2064 to passG1330, that, while ApollosG625 wasG1510 at CorinthG2882, PaulG3972 having passedG1330 through the upper country cameG2064 to EphesusG2181, and foundG2147 certainG5100 disciplesG3101: 2and he saidG3004 unto them, Did ye receiveG2983 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 when ye believedG4100? And they saidG3004 unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hearG191 whether the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 wasG1510 given. 3And he saidG3004, Into what thenG3767 were ye baptizedG907? And they saidG3004, Into John’s baptismG908. 4And PaulG3972 saidG3004, JohnG2491 baptizedG907 with the baptismG908 of repentanceG3341, sayingG3004 unto the peopleG2992 that they should believeG4100 on him that should comeG2064 after him, that isG1510, on JesusG2424. 5And when they heardG191 this, they were baptizedG907 into the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424. 6And when PaulG3972 had laidG2007 his handsG5495 upon them, the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 cameG2064 on them; and they spake with tonguesG1100, and prophesiedG4395. 7And they wereG1510 in all about twelveG1427 menG435.
8And he enteredG1525 into the synagogueG4864, and spake boldlyG3955 for the space of threeG5140 monthsG3376, reasoningG1256 and persuadingG3982 as to the things concerningG4012 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316. 9But whenG5613 some were hardenedG4645 and disobedientG544, speakingG2551 evilG2551 of the WayG3598 before the multitudeG4128, he departedG868 from them, and separatedG873 the disciplesG3101, reasoningG1256 daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10And this continued for the space of twoG1417 yearsG2094; so that all they that dwelt in AsiaG773 heardG191 the wordG3056 of the LordG2962, both JewsG2453 and GreeksG1672. 11And GodG2316 wrought special miracles by the handsG5495 of PaulG3972: 12insomuch that unto the sickG770 were carried awayG667 from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseasesG3554 departed from them, and the evilG4190 spiritsG4151 wentG1607 out. 13But certainG5100 alsoG2532 of the strolling JewsG2453, exorcists, took upon them to nameG3686 over them that had the evilG4190 spiritsG4151 the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424, sayingG3004, I adjureG3726 you by JesusG2424 whom PaulG3972 preacheth. 14And there wereG1510 sevenG2033 sonsG5207 of oneG5100 Sceva, a JewG2453, a chiefG749 priestG749, who did this. 15And the evilG4190 spiritG4151 answeredG611 and saidG3004 unto them, JesusG2424 I knowG1097, and PaulG3972 I knowG1097; but who areG1510 ye? 16And the manG444 in whom the evilG4190 spiritG4151 wasG1510 leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that houseG3624 nakedG1131 and woundedG5135. 17And this becameG1096 known to all, both JewsG2453 and GreeksG1672, that dwelt at EphesusG2181; and fearG5401 fell upon them all, and the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424 was magnifiedG3170. 18ManyG4183 alsoG2532 of them that had believedG4100 cameG2064, confessingG1843, and declaringG312 their deedsG4234. 19And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their booksG976 together and burnedG2618 them in the sight of all; and they counted the priceG5092 of them, and foundG2147 it fifty thousand pieces of silverG694. 20So mightily grewG837 the wordG3056 of the LordG2962 and prevailed.
21NowG1161 after these thingsG3778 were ended, PaulG3972 purposed in the spiritG4151, whenG5613 he had passedG1330 through MacedoniaG3109 and AchaiaG882, to goG4198 to JerusalemG2414, sayingG3004, After I have been there, I must alsoG2532 seeG3708 RomeG4516. 22And having sentG649 into MacedoniaG3109 twoG1417 of them that ministeredG1247 unto him, TimothyG5095 and ErastusG2037, he himself stayed in AsiaG773 for a while.
23And about that timeG2540 there aroseG1096 no smallG3641 stir concerningG4012 the WayG3598. 24For a certainG5100 man namedG3686 DemetriusG1216, a silversmith, who madeG4160 silverG693 shrines of Diana, broughtG3930 no littleG3641 businessG2039 unto the craftsmenG5079; 25whom he gathered togetherG4867, with the workmenG2040 of like occupation, and saidG3004, Sirs, ye knowG1987 that by this businessG2039 we have our wealth. 26And ye seeG2334 and hearG191, that not aloneG3441 at EphesusG2181, but almostG4975 throughout all AsiaG773, this PaulG3972 hath persuadedG3982 and turned away much peopleG3793, sayingG3004 that they areG1510 no godsG2316, that areG1510 made with handsG5495: 27and not onlyG3440 is there dangerG2793 that this our trade comeG2064 into disrepute; but alsoG2532 that the temple of the greatG3173 goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should evenG2532 be deposed from her magnificence whom all AsiaG773 and the worldG3625 worshippeth. 28And when they heardG191 this they were filled with wrathG2372, and criedG2896 out, sayingG3004, GreatG3173 is Diana of the EphesiansG2180. 29And the cityG4172 was filledG4130 with the confusion: and they rushedG3729 with oneG3661 accordG3661 into the theatre, having seized GaiusG1050 and AristarchusG708, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel. 30And when PaulG3972 was minded to enterG1525 in unto the people, the disciplesG3101 suffered him not. 31And certainG5100 alsoG2532 of the Asiarchs, beingG1510 his friendsG5384, sentG3992 unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre. 32Some thereforeG3767 criedG2896 oneG5100 thing, and some another: for the assemblyG1577 wasG1510 in confusion; and the moreG4183 part knew not wherefore they wereG1510 come togetherG4905. 33And they brought AlexanderG223 out of the multitudeG3793, the JewsG2453 putting him forward. And AlexanderG223 beckoned with the handG5495, and would have made a defence unto the peopleG3793. 34But whenG5613 they perceived that he wasG1510 a JewG2453, all with oneG1520 voiceG5456 about the space of twoG1417 hoursG5610 criedG2896 out, GreatG3173 isG1510 Diana of the EphesiansG2180. 35And when the townclerk had quieted the multitudeG3793, he saith, Ye menG444 of Ephesus, what manG444 isG1510 there who knoweth not that the cityG4172 of the EphesiansG2180 isG1510 temple-keeper of the greatG3173 Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? 36Seeing then that these thingsG3778 cannot beG1510 gainsaid, ye oughtG1163 to beG1510 quiet, and to do nothingG3367 rash. 37For ye have broughtG71 hither these menG435, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38If thereforeG3767 DemetriusG1216, and the craftsmenG5079 that areG1510 with him, have a matterG3056 against any man, the courts areG1510 open, and there areG1510 proconsulsG446: let them accuse oneG240 another. 39But if ye seekG1934 anythingG5100 about otherG2087 matters, it shall be settled in the regular assemblyG1577. 40For indeed we are in dangerG2793 to be accused concerningG4012 this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be ableG1410 to giveG591 accountG3056 of this concourse. 41And when he had thus spoken, he dismissedG630 the assemblyG1577.
