John 5
1After these thingsG3778 there wasG1510 a feastG1859 of the JewsG2453; and JesusG2424 wentG305 up to JerusalemG2414.
2NowG1161 there isG1510 in JerusalemG2414 by the sheepgatea poolG2861, which isG1510 called in HebrewG1447 Bethesda, having fiveG4002 porches. 3In these lay a multitudeG4128 of them that were sickG770, blindG5185, halt, witheredG3584. 41 5And a certainG5100 manG444 wasG1510 there, who had beenG1510 thirtyG5144 and eightG3638 yearsG2094 in his infirmityG769. 6When JesusG2424 sawG3708 him lying, and knewG1097 that he had been now a long timeG5550 in that case, he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole? 7The sickG770 manG444 answeredG611 him, SirG2962, I have no manG444, whenG3752 the waterG5204 is troubledG5015, to putG906 me into the poolG2861: but while I am comingG2064, another steppeth downG2597 before me. 8JesusG2424 saith unto him, AriseG1453, takeG142 up thy bed, and walkG4043. 9And straightway the manG444 wasG1510 made whole, and tookG142 up his bed and walkedG4043.
NowG1161 it wasG1510 the sabbathG4521 on that dayG2250. 10So the JewsG2453 saidG3004 unto him that wasG1510 cured, It isG1510 the sabbathG4521, and it isG1510 not lawfulG1832 for thee to takeG142 up thy bed. 11But he answeredG611 them, He that madeG4160 me whole, the sameG846 saidG3004 unto me, TakeG142 up thy bed, and walkG4043. 12They askedG2065 him, Who isG1510 the manG444 that saidG3004 unto thee, TakeG142 up thy bed, and walkG4043? 13But he that wasG1510 healedG2390 knew not who it wasG1510; for JesusG2424 had conveyed himself away, a multitudeG3793 beingG1510 in the placeG5117. 14Afterward JesusG2424 findeth him in the temple, and saidG3004 unto him, BeholdG2396, thou art made whole: sinG264 no moreG3371, lestG3361 a worse thingG3778 befall thee. 15The manG444 wentG565 awayG565, and toldG3004 the JewsG2453 that it wasG1510 JesusG2424 who had madeG4160 him whole. 16And for this cause the JewsG2453 persecutedG1377 JesusG2424, because he did these thingsG3778 on the sabbathG4521. 17But Jesus answeredG611 them, My FatherG3962 worketh even until nowG1161, and I workG2038. 18For this cause thereforeG3767 the JewsG2453 soughtG2212 the moreG3123 to killG615 him, because he not onlyG3440 brake the sabbathG4521, but alsoG2532 called GodG2316 his ownG2398 FatherG3962, makingG4160 himself equalG2470 with GodG2316.
19JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 answeredG611 and saidG3004 unto them, Verily, verily, I sayG3004 unto you, The SonG5207 can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the FatherG3962 doing: for what thingsG3778 soever he doeth, these the SonG5207 alsoG2532 doeth in like manner. 20For the FatherG3962 loveth the SonG5207, and showeth him all thingsG3778 that himself doeth: and greaterG3173 worksG2041 than these will he showG1166 him, that ye may marvelG2296. 21For as the FatherG3962 raiseth the deadG3498 and giveth them lifeG2227, evenG2532 so the SonG5207 alsoG2532 giveth lifeG2227 to whom he will. 22For neither doth the FatherG3962 judgeG2919 any man, but he hath givenG1325 all judgmentG2920 unto the SonG5207; 23that all may honorG5091 the SonG5207, even as they honorG5091 the FatherG3962. He that honoreth not the SonG5207 honoreth not the FatherG3962 that sentG3992 him. 24Verily, verily, I sayG3004 unto you, He that heareth my wordG3056, and believeth him that sentG3992 me, hath eternalG166 lifeG2222, and cometh not into judgmentG2920, but hath passed out of deathG2288 into lifeG2222. 25Verily, verily, I sayG3004 unto you, The hourG5610 cometh, and nowG3568 isG1510, whenG3753 the deadG3498 shall hearG191 the voiceG5456 of the SonG5207 of GodG2316; and they that hearG191 shall liveG2198. 26For as the FatherG3962 hath lifeG2222 in himself, evenG2532 so gaveG1325 he to the SonG5207 alsoG2532 to have lifeG2222 in himself: 27and he gaveG1325 him authorityG1849 to execute judgmentG2920, because he isG1510 a sonG5207 of manG444. 28MarvelG2296 not at this: for the hourG5610 cometh, in which all that are in the tombsG3419 shall hearG191 his voiceG5456, 29and shall comeG1607 forth; they that have done goodG18, unto the resurrectionG386 of lifeG2222; and they that have done evilG5337, unto the resurrectionG386 of judgmentG2920.
30I can of myself do nothing: as I hearG191, I judgeG2919: and my judgmentG2920 isG1510 righteousG1342; because I seekG2212 not mine own will, but the will of him that sentG3992 me. 31If I bearG3140 witnessG3140 of myself, my witnessG3140 isG1510 not trueG227. 32It isG1510 another that beareth witnessG3140 of me; and I know that the witnessG3140 which he witnesseth of me isG1510 trueG227. 33Ye have sentG649 unto JohnG2491, and he hath borne witnessG3140 unto the truthG225. 34But the witnessG3141 which I receiveG2983 is not from manG444: howbeit I sayG3004 these thingsG3778, that ye may be savedG4982. 35He wasG1510 the lampG3088 that burneth and shineth; and ye wereG1510 willingG2309 to rejoiceG21 for a season in his lightG5457. 36But the witnessG3140 which I have is greaterG3173 than that of JohnG2491; for the worksG2041 which the FatherG3962 hath givenG1325 me to accomplish, the very worksG2041 that I do, bear witnessG3140 of me, that the FatherG3962 hath sentG649 me. 37And the FatherG3962 that sentG3992 me, he hath borne witnessG3140 of me. Ye have neither heardG191 his voiceG5456 at any timeG4455, nor seenG3708 his formG1491. 38And ye have not his wordG3056 abidingG3306 in you: for whom he sentG649, him ye believeG4100 not. 39Ye searchG2045 the scripturesG1124, because ye thinkG1380 that in them ye have eternalG166 lifeG2222; and these areG1510 they which bearG3140 witnessG3140 of me; 40and ye willG2309 not comeG2064 to me, that ye may have lifeG2222. 41I receiveG2983 not gloryG1391 from menG444. 42But I knowG1097 you, that ye have not the loveG26 of GodG2316 in yourselves. 43I am comeG2064 in my Father’s nameG3686, and ye receiveG2983 me not: if another shall comeG2064 in his ownG2398 nameG3686, him ye will receiveG2983. 44HowG4459 can ye believeG4100, who receiveG2983 gloryG1391 oneG240 of another, and the gloryG1391 that cometh from the onlyG3441 GodG2316 ye seekG2212 not? 45ThinkG1380 not that I will accuseG2723 you to the FatherG3962: there isG1510 oneG3739 that accuseth you, even MosesG3475, on whom ye have set your hopeG1679. 46For if ye believedG4100 MosesG3475, ye would believeG4100 me; for he wroteG1125 of me. 47But if ye believeG4100 not his writings, howG4459 shall ye believeG4100 my words?
Notes
- 1. John 5:4 5:4 Many ancient authorities insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water: for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden. ↩
