Luke 3:1-22
1NowG1161 in the fifteenthG4003 yearG2094 of the reignG2231 of TiberiusG5086 CaesarG2541, when 1PontiusG4194 PilateG4091 wasG2230 governorG2230 of JudeaG2449, and 2HerodG2264 was tetrarchG5067 of GalileeG1056 and his brotherG80 PhilipG5376 was tetrarchG5067 of the regionG5561 of IturaeaG2484 and TrachonitisG5139, and LysaniasG3078 was tetrarchG5067 of AbileneG9, 2in the highG749 priesthoodG749 of 3AnnasG452 and 4CaiaphasG2533, 5the wordG4487 of GodG2316 cameG1096 to JohnG2491, the sonG5207 of ZechariahG2197, in the wildernessG2048. 3And he cameG2064 into allG3956 6the regionG4066 aroundG4066 the JordanG2446, preachingG2784 a baptismG908 of repentanceG3341 7for the forgivenessG859 of sinsG266; 4as it is writtenG1125 in the bookG976 of the wordsG3056 of IsaiahG2268 the prophetG4396: “8The voiceG5456 of one callingG994 9outG994 in the wildernessG2048, ‘PrepareG2090 the wayG3598 of the LordG2962, MakeG4160 His pathsG5147 straightG2117!510EveryG3956 ravineG5327 will be filledG4137, And everyG3956 mountainG3735 and hillG1015 will be loweredG5013; The crookedG4646 will becomeG1510G1519 straightG2117, And the roughG5138 roadsG3598 smoothG3006;611And allG3956 12fleshG4561 will 13seeG3708 the salvationG4992 of GodG2316!’”
7SoG3767 he was sayingG3004 to the crowdsG3793 who were goingG1607 outG1607 to be baptizedG907 by him, “14You 15offspringG1081 of vipersG2191, whoG5101 warnedG5263 you to fleeG5343 from the wrathG3709 toG3195 comeG3195? 8ThereforeG3767 produceG4160 fruitsG2590 that are consistentG514 with repentanceG3341, and 16do not startG757 sayingG3004 17to yourselvesG1438, ‘18We haveG2192 AbrahamG11 as our fatherG3962,’ for I sayG3004 to you that from theseG3778 stonesG3037 GodG2316 is ableG1410 to raiseG1453 upG1453 childrenG5043 for AbrahamG11. 9But indeedG2532 the axeG513 is alreadyG2235 being laidG2749 at the rootG4491 of the treesG1186; soG3767 19everyG3956 treeG1186 that does not bearG4160 goodG2570 fruitG2590 is cutG1581 downG1581 and thrownG906 into the fireG4442.”
10And the crowdsG3793 were questioningG1905 him, sayingG3004, “20ThenG3767 whatG5101 are we to doG4160?” 11And he would answerG611 and sayG3004 to them, “The one who hasG2192 twoG1417 21tunicsG5509 is to 22shareG3330 with the one who hasG2192 noneG3361; and the one who hasG2192 foodG1033 is to doG4160 likewiseG3668.” 12NowG1161 evenG2532 23taxG5057 collectorsG5057 cameG2064 to be baptizedG907, and they saidG3004 to him, “TeacherG1320, whatG5101 are we to doG4160?” 13And he saidG3004 to them, “24CollectG4238 noG3367 moreG4183 thanG3844 what you have been orderedG1299 to.” 14And soldiersG4754 alsoG2532 were questioningG1905 him, sayingG3004, “WhatG5101 are we to doG4160, we asG2532 wellG2532?” And he saidG3004 to them, “Do not extortG1286 moneyG1286 from anyoneG3367, norG3366 2526harassG4811 anyone, and 27be contentG714 with your wagesG3800.”
15NowG1161 while the peopleG2992 wereG4328 inG4328 aG4328 stateG4328 ofG4328 expectationG4328 and they allG3956 were thinkingG1260 carefullyG1260 in their heartsG2588 aboutG4012 JohnG2491, 28whetherG3379 he himselfG846 perhapsG3379 was the 29ChristG5547, 1630JohnG2491 respondedG611 to them allG3956, sayingG3004, “As for me, I baptizeG907 you with waterG5204; but He is comingG2064 who is mightierG2478 than I, and I amG1510 not fitG2425 to untieG3089 the strapsG2438 of His sandalsG5266; He will baptizeG907 you 31with the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 and fireG4442. 17His 32winnowingG4425 forkG4425 is in His handG5495 to thoroughlyG1245 clearG1245 His threshingG257 floorG257, and to gatherG4863 the wheatG4621 into His barnG596; but He will burnG2618 upG2618 the chaffG892 with 33unquenchableG762 fireG4442.”
18SoG3767 with manyG4183 otherG2087 exhortationsG3870 he preachedG2097 the gospelG2097 to the peopleG2992. 19But when 34HerodG2264 the tetrarchG5068 was reprimandedG1651 by him regardingG4012 35HerodiasG2266, his brother’sG80 wifeG1135, and regardingG4012 allG3956 the evilG4190 thingsG4190 whichG3739 36HerodG2264 had doneG4160, 20Herod alsoG2532 addedG4369 thisG3778 to them allG3956: 37he lockedG2623 JohnG2491 upG2623 in prisonG5438.
2138NowG1161 whenG1722 allG537 the peopleG2992 were baptizedG907, JesusG2424 alsoG2532 was baptizedG907, and while He was 39prayingG4336, heavenG3772 was openedG455, 22and the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 descendedG2597 upon Him in bodilyG4984 formG1491 likeG5613 a doveG4058, and a voiceG5456 cameG1096 from heavenG3772: “40You are My belovedG27 SonG5207, in You I amG2106 wellG2106 pleasedG2106.”
