Isaiah 36
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass in the fourteenth yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, that SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 came up against all the fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and took them. 2And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sentH7971 Rab-shakeh from LachishH3923 to JerusalemH3389, to kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, with a strong force. And he stoodH5975 by the aqueduct of the upperH5945 poolH1295, on the highwayH4546 of the fuller's fieldH7704. 3Then cameH3318 forthH3318 to him EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of Hilkijah, who was over the householdH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623, the chronicler. 4And Rab-shakeh saidH559 to them, SayH559 now to HezekiahH2396, ThusH3541 saysH559 the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804: What confidence is this in which thou trustest? 5Thou sayest, but it is a wordH1697 of the lipsH8193, [There is] counselH6098 and strengthH1369 for warH4421. NowH6258 on whom dost thou relyH982, that thou hast revolted against me? 6Behold, thou reliest upon the staffH4938 of that broken reedH7070, upon EgyptH4714, on which if a manH376 leanH5564, it goesH935 into his handH3709, and pierces it: soH3651 is PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 to all that relyH982 upon him. 7And if thou sayH559 to me, We relyH982 upon Jehovah our 1GodH430: is it not he, whose highH1116 placesH1116 and whose altarsH4196 HezekiahH2396 has removedH5493, sayingH559 to JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, Ye shall worship before this altarH4196? 8And nowH6258 engage, I pray thee, with my masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and I will giveH5414 thee two thousandH505 horsesH5483, if thou be ableH3201 on thy part to setH5414 ridersH7392 upon them. 9HowH349 then wilt thou turnH7725 awayH7725 the faceH6440 of oneH259 captain of the least of my master's servantsH5650? And thou reliest upon EgyptH4714 for chariotsH7393 and for horsemenH6571! 10And nowH6258 am I comeH5927 up without Jehovah against this landH776 to destroyH7843 it? Jehovah saidH559 to me, GoH5927 up against this landH776 and destroyH7843 it. 11And EliakimH471 and ShebnaH7644 and JoahH3098 saidH559 to Rab-shakeh, SpeakH1696, we pray thee, to thy servantsH5650 in Syriac, for we understand it; and speakH1696 not to us in the Jewish [language] in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971 that are upon the wallH2346. 12And Rab-shakeh saidH559, Is it to thy masterH113 and to thee that my masterH113 sentH7971 me to speakH1696 these wordsH1697? Is it not to the menH376 that sitH3427 on the wallH2346, that they may eatH398 their own dung, and drinkH8354 their own urine with you? 13And Rab-shakeh stoodH5975 and cried with a loud voiceH6963 in the Jewish [language], and saidH559, HearH8085 the wordsH1697 of the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804! 14ThusH3541 saysH559 the kingH4428: Let not HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5377 you; for he will not be ableH3201 to deliverH5337 you. 15Neither let HezekiahH2396 makeH5414 you relyH982 upon Jehovah, sayingH559, Jehovah will certainly deliverH5337 us; this cityH5892 shall not be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 16Hearken not to HezekiahH2396; for thusH3541 saysH559 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804: MakeH6213 peace with me and comeH3318 out to me; and eatH398 every oneH376 of his vineH1612, and every oneH376 of his fig-tree, and drinkH8354 every oneH376 the watersH4325 of his own cisternH953; 17until I comeH935 and takeH3947 you awayH3947 to a landH776 like your own landH776, a landH776 of corn and wineH8492, a landH776 of breadH3899 and vineyardsH3754. 18Let not HezekiahH2396 persuade you, sayingH559, Jehovah will deliverH5337 us. Has any of the 2godsH430 of the nationsH1471 deliveredH5337 his landH776 out of the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804? 19WhereH346 are the 3godsH430 of HamathH2574 and of ArpadH774? whereH346 are the 4godsH430 of SepharvaimH5617? and have they deliveredH5337 SamariaH8111 out of my handH3027? 20Who are they among all the 5godsH430 of these countries that have deliveredH5337 their country out of my handH3027, that Jehovah should deliverH5337 JerusalemH3389 out of my handH3027? 21And they were silentH2790, and answered him not a wordH1697; for the king's commandH4687 was, sayingH559, AnswerH6030 him not. 22And EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of Hilkijah, who was over the householdH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623, the chronicler, cameH935 to HezekiahH2396, with their garmentsH899 rent, and toldH5046 him the wordsH1697 of Rab-shakeh.
