1 Now δὲ de G1161 Jesus Ἰησοῦ Iēsou G2424 having been born G1080 in Bethlehem Βηθλέεμ Bēthleem G965 of Judaea, in the days ἡμέραις hēmerais G2250 of Herod Ἡρῴδου Hērōdou G2264 the king βασιλέως basileōs G935 , behold ἰδοὺ idou G2400 magi μάγοι magoi G3097 from the east ἀνατολῶν anatolōn G395 arrived at Jerusalem Ἱεροσόλυμα Hi'erosoluma G2414 , saying, 3 But Herod Ἡρῴδης Hērōdēs G2264 the king βασιλεὺς basileus G935 having heard G191 [ of it ], was troubled ἐταράχθη etarachthē G5015 , and all Jerusalem Ἱεροσόλυμα Hi'erosoluma G2414 with him ; 5 And they said G3004 to him , In Bethlehem Βηθλέεμ Bēthleem G965 of Judaea; for thus οὕτως houtōs G3779 it is written G1125 through the prophet προφήτου· prophētou G4396 : 6 And thou Bethlehem βηθλέεμ bēthleem G965 , land γῆ gē G1093 of Juda, art in no wise the least ἐλαχίστη elachistē G1646 among the governors G2232 of Juda; for out of thee shall go ἐξελεύσεται exeleusetai G1831 forth G1831 a leader who shall shepherd ποιμανεῖ poimanei G4165 my people λαόν laon G2992 Israel Ἰσραήλ.¶ Israēl G2474 . 7 Then Τότε Tote G5119 Herod Ἡρῴδης Hērōdēs G2264 , having secretly λάθρᾳ lathra G2977 called καλέσας kalesas G2564 the magi μάγους magous G3097 , inquired of them accurately the time χρόνον chronon G5550 of the star ἀστέρος, asteros G792 that was appearing; 8 and having sent G3992 them to Bethlehem Βηθλέεμ Bēthleem G965 , said G3004 , Go G4198 , search out accurately concerning G4012 the child παιδίου. paidiou G3813 , and when ye shall have found G2147 [ him ] bring me back word ἀπαγγείλατέ apangeilate G518 , so that I also G2532 may come ἐλθὼν elthōn G2064 and do him homage. 9 And they having heard G191 the king βασιλέως basileōs G935 went their way ; and lo , the star ἀστὴρ astēr G792 , which they had seen G3708 in the east ἀνατολῇ anatolēa G395 , went before them until it came G2064 and stood G2476 over the place where οὗ hou G3757 the little child παιδίον. paidion G3813 was G1510 . 11 And having come ἐλθόντες elthontes G2064 into the house οἰκίαν oikian G3614 they saw G3708 the little child παιδίον paidion G3813 with Mary Μαρίας Marias G3137 his mother μητρὸς mētros G3384 , and falling G4098 down πεσόντες pesontes G4098 did him homage. And having opened ἀνοίξαντες anoixantes G455 their treasures G2344 , they offered προσήνεγκαν prosēnegkan G4374 to him gifts δῶρα, dōra G1435 , gold χρυσὸν chruson G5557 , and frankincense λίβανον libanon G3030 , and myrrh σμύρναν. smurnan G4666 . 12 And being divinely instructed in a dream ὄναρ onar G3677 not to return ἀνακάμψαι anakampsai G344 to Herod Ἡρῴδην, Hērōdēn G2264 , they departed into their own country χώραν chōran G5561 another way G3598 . 13 Now G1161 , they having departed , behold ἰδοὺ idou G2400 , an angel ἄγγελος angelos G32 of [ the ] Lord κυρίου kuriou G2962 appears φαίνεται phainetai G5316 in a dream ὄναρ onar G3677 to Joseph Ἰωσὴφ Iōsēph G2501 , saying λέγων· legōn G3004 , Arise G1453 , take παράλαβε paralabe G3880 to [thee] the little child παιδίον paidion G3813 and his mother μητέρα mētera G3384 , and flee φεῦγε pheuge G5343 into Egypt Αἴγυπτον Aigupton G125 , and be G1510 there until I shall tell G3004 thee; for Herod Ἡρῴδης Hērōdēs G2264 will seek ζητεῖν zētein G2212 the little child παιδίον paidion G3813 to destroy ἀπολέσαι apolesai G622 it . 14 And , having arisen ἐγερθεὶς egertheis G1453 , he took G3880 to [ him ] the little child παιδίον paidion G3813 and his mother μητέρα mētera G3384 by night νυκτὸς nuktos G3571 , and departed into Egypt Αἴγυπτον, Aigupton G125 . 15 And he was G1510 there until the death of Herod Ἡρῴδου, Hērōdou G2264 , that that might be G1510 fulfilled which was G1510 spoken by [ the ] Lord κυρίου kuriou G2962 through the prophet προφήτου prophētou G4396 , saying λέγοντος· legontos G3004 , Out of Egypt Αἰγύπτου Aiguptou G125 have I called ἐκάλεσα ekalesa G2564 my son υἱόν huion G5207 . 16 Then Herod Ἡρῴδης Hērōdēs G2264 , seeing G3708 that he had been mocked G1702 by the magi μάγων magōn G3097 , was greatly G3029 enraged ; and sent G649 and slew all the boys which [ were ] in Bethlehem Βηθλέεμ Bēthleem G965 , and in all its borders, from two years and under , according κατὰ kata G2596 to the time χρόνον chronon G5550 which he had accurately inquired from the magi μάγων.¶ magōn G3097 . 17 Then Τότε Tote G5119 was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet προφήτου prophētou G4396 , saying λέγοντος· legontos G3004 , 19 But Herod Ἡρῴδου Hērōdou G2264 having died , behold ἰδοὺ idou G2400 , an angel ἄγγελος angelos G32 of [ the ] Lord κυρίου kuriou G2962 appears φαίνεται phainetai G5316 in a dream ὄναρ onar G3677 to Joseph Ἰωσὴφ Iōsēph G2501 in Egypt Αἰγύπτῳ Aiguptō G125 , saying, 20 Arise G1453 , take παράλαβε paralabe G3880 to [thee] the little child παιδίον paidion G3813 and its mother μητέρα mētera G3384 , and go πορεύου poreuou G4198 into the land γῆν gēn G1093 of Israel Ἰσραήλ· Israēl G2474 : for they who sought ζητοῦντες zētountes G2212 the life ψυχὴν psuchēn G5590 of the little child παιδίου.¶ paidiou G3813 are dead . 22 but having heard G191 that 'Archelaus reigns G936 over Judaea, instead of Herod Ἡρῴδου Hērōdou G2264 his father πατρὸς patros G3962 ,' he was afraid ἐφοβήθη ephobēthē G5399 to go ἀπελθεῖν. apelthein G565 there ; and having been divinely instructed in a dream ὄναρ onar G3677 , he went G565 away G565 into the parts G3313 of Galilee Γαλιλαίας, Galilaias G1056 , 23 and came ἐλθὼν elthōn G2064 and dwelt in a town G4172 called κληθήσεται.¶ klēthēsetai G2564 Nazareth Ναζαρέτ, Nazaret G3478 ; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets προφητῶν prophētōn G4396 , He shall be called G2564 a Nazaraene. ← Matthew 1 Matthew 3 → Commentaries on Matthew 2 Darby Bible — 1889 — Public Domain
