Context of Matthew 2:7
5And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: 6And thou Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; 8and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found [him] bring me back word, so that I also may come and do him homage. 9And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was.

Commentaries on Matthew 2:7
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Privily - Secretly, privately. He did this to ascertain the time when Jesus was born. Diligently - Accurately, exactly. He took pains to learn the precise time when the star appeared. He did this because he naturally concluded that the star appeared just at the time of his birth, and he wished to know precisely how old the child was.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-23This story shows how certain parts of the life of Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. This includes: his family history and birth (chapter 1), and the places he lived as a child (chapter 2). The story also shows how efforts to stop the plan of God do not work (2:1–15; see also 27:62–66).Read the comment

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men--Herod has so far succeeded in his murderous design: he has tracked the spot where lies his victim, an unconscious babe. But he has another point to fix--the date of His birth--without which he might still miss his mark. The one he had got from the Sanhedrim; the other he will have from the sages; but secretly, lest his object should be suspected and defeated. So he inquired of them…Read the comment
