1 Brethren and fathers πατέρες, pateres G3962 , hear ἀκούσατέ akousate G191 my defence which I now make to you . 2 And hearing G191 that he addressed them in the Hebrew Ἑβραΐδι Hebraidi G1446 tongue, they kept the more μᾶλλον mallon G3123 quiet ; and he says φησίν· phēsin G5346 , 6 And it came G1096 to pass G1096 , as I was journeying πορευομένῳ poreuomenō G4198 and drawing ἐγγίζοντι engizonti G1448 near to Damascus Δαμασκῷ Damaskō G1154 , that , about mid-day, there suddenly ἐξαίφνης exaiphnēs G1810 shone out of heaven οὐρανοῦ ouranou G3772 a great light φῶς phōs G5457 round about me . 8 And I answered ἀπεκρίθην· apekrithēn G611 , Who art thou, Lord κύριε; kurie G2962 ? And he said G3004 to me , I am G1510 Jesus Ἰησοῦς Iēsous G2424 the Nazaraean, whom thou persecutest. 9 But they that were G1510 with me beheld the light φῶς phōs G5457 , [ and were G1510 filled with fear], but heard ἤκουσαν ēkousan G191 not the voice φωνὴν phōnēn G5456 of him that was G1510 speaking λαλοῦντός lalountos G2980 to me . 10 And I said G3004 , What shall I do , Lord κύριε; kurie G2962 ? And the Lord κύριος kurios G2962 said G3004 to me , Rise G450 up , and go πορεύου poreuou G4198 to Damascus Δαμασκόν, Damaskon G1154 , and there it shall be told G3004 thee of all things πάντων pantōn G3956 which it is appointed thee to do . 11 And as I could not see ἐνέβλεπον eneblepon G1689 , through the glory G1391 of that light φωτὸς phōtos G5457 , being led by the hand of those who were with me , I came G2064 to Damascus Δαμασκόν.¶ Damaskon G1154 . 12 And a certain τις, tis G5100 Ananias Ἁνανίας Hananias G367 , a pious man ἀνὴρ anēr G435 according κατὰ kata G2596 to the law νόμον, nomon G3551 , borne witness μαρτυρούμενος marturoumenos G3140 to by all the Jews Ἰουδαίων, Ioudaiōn G2453 who dwelt [ there ], 16 And now νῦν nun G3568 why τί ti G5101 lingerest thou? Arise G450 and get baptised, and have thy sins ἁμαρτίας hamartias G266 washed away G630 , calling ἐπικαλεσάμενος epikalesamenos G1941 on his name ὄνομα onoma G3686 . 17 And it came G1096 to pass G1096 when I had returned ὑποστρέψαντι hupostrepsanti G5290 to Jerusalem Ἰερουσαλὴμ Ierousalēm G2419 , and as I was praying προσευχομένου proseuchomenou G4336 in the temple , that I became G1096 in ecstasy, 18 and saw G3708 him saying λέγοντά legonta G3004 to me , Make haste and go ἔξελθε exelthe G1831 quickly out of Jerusalem Ἰερουσαλήμ, Ierousalēm G2419 , for they will not receive παραδέξονταί paradexontai G3858 thy testimony μαρτυρίαν marturian G3141 concerning G4012 me . 21 And he said G3004 to me , Go πορεύου, poreuou G4198 , for I will send thee to the nations G1484 afar off . 22 And they heard G191 him until this word λόγου logou G3056 , and lifted ἐπῆραν epēran G1869 up their voice φωνὴν phōnēn G5456 , saying λέγοντες· legontes G3004 , Away αἶρε aire G142 with such a one G3778 as that from the earth γῆς gēs G1093 , for it was not fit he should live ζῆν. zēn G2198 . 23 And as they were crying , and throwing away their clothes G2440 , and casting G906 dust κονιορτὸν koniorton G2868 into the air ἀέρα aera G109 , 24 the chiliarch commanded G2753 him to be brought G1521 into the fortress, saying G3004 that he should be examined by scourging , that he might ascertain for what cause αἰτίαν aitian G156 they cried thus G3779 against him . 25 But as they stretched him forward with the thongs , Paul Παῦλος· Paulos G3972 said G3004 to the centurion ἑκατόνταρχον hekatontarchon G1543 who stood ἑστῶτα hestōta G2476 [ by ], Is it lawful ἔξεστιν exestin G1832 for you to scourge a man ἄνθρωπον anthrōpon G444 [ who is ] a Roman Ῥωμαῖον Rhōmaion G4514 and uncondemned ἀκατάκριτον akatakriton G178 ? 26 And the centurion ἑκατοντάρχης hekatontarchēs G1543 , having heard G191 it , went and reported ἀπήγγειλεν apēngeilen G518 it to the chiliarch, saying λέγων· legōn G3004 , What art thou going to do ? for this man ἄνθρωπος anthrōpos G444 is G1510 a Roman Ῥωμαῖός Rhōmaios G4514 . 28 And the chiliarch answered ἀπεκρίθη apekrithē G611 , I , for a great πολλοῦ pollou G4183 sum κεφαλαίου kephalaiou G2774 , bought this citizenship . And Paul Παῦλος Paulos G3972 said ἔφη· ephē G5346 , But I was also G2532 [free] born G1080 . 29 Immediately εὐθέως eutheōs G2112 therefore οὖν oun G3767 those who were G1510 going to examine him left him , and the chiliarch also G2532 was G1510 afraid ἐφοβήθη ephobēthē G5399 when he ascertained that he was G1510 a Roman Ῥωμαῖός Rhōmaios G4514 , and because he had bound G1210 him . 30 And on the morrow, desirous to know γνῶναι gnōnai G1097 the certainty [ of the matter] why τί ti G5101 he was accused G2723 of the Jews Ἰουδαίων, Ioudaiōn G2453 , he loosed G3089 him , and commanded ἐκέλευσεν ekeleusen G2753 the chief ἀρχιερεῖς archiereis G749 priests G749 and all the council συνέδριον sunedrion G4892 to meet , and having brought G2609 Paul Παῦλον Paulon G3972 down καταγαγὼν katagagōn G2609 set ἔστησεν estēsen G2476 him before them . ← Acts 21 Acts 23 → Darby Bible — 1889 — Public Domain
