Jeremiah 2
1And the wordH1697 of Jehovah came to me, sayingH559, 2GoH1980 and cry in the earsH241 of JerusalemH3389, sayingH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah: I rememberH2142 for thee the kindness of thy youthH5271, the loveH160 of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wildernessH4057, in a landH776 not sownH2232. 3IsraelH3478 was holinessH6944 unto Jehovah, the first-fruits of his increase: all that devourH398 him are guiltyH816; evilH7451 shall comeH935 upon them, saith Jehovah. 4HearH8085 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, houseH1004 of JacobH3290, and all the familiesH4940 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478. 5ThusH3541 saith Jehovah: What injusticeH5766 have your fathersH1 foundH4672 in me, that they are gone farH7368 from me, and have walked after vanityH1892, and become vain? 6And they saidH559 not, WhereH346 is Jehovah, that broughtH5927 us up out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, that led us in the wildernessH4057, in a landH776 of desertsH6160 and of pitsH7745, in a landH776 of drought and of the shadow of death, in a landH776 that no oneH376 passeth through, and whereH346 no manH376 dwelleth? 7And I broughtH935 you into a fruitful landH776, to eatH398 the fruitH6529 thereof and the goodH2898 thereof; and ye entered and defiledH2930 my landH776, and madeH7760 my heritage an abominationH8441. 8The priestsH3548 saidH559 not, WhereH346 is Jehovah? and they that handled the lawH8451 knewH3045 me not; and the shepherdsH7462 transgressedH6586 against me; and the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012 by BaalH1168, and walkedH1980 after [things that] do not profitH3276. 9ThereforeH3651 will I yetH5750 plead with you, saith Jehovah, and with your children's children will I plead. 10For passH5674 over to the isles of Chittim, and seeH7200; and sendH7971 unto KedarH6938, and considerH7200 diligently, and seeH7200 if there have beenH1961 such a thing. 11Hath a nationH1471 changed [its] 1godsH430? and they are no 2godsH430; — but my peopleH5971 have changed their gloryH3519 for that which doth not profitH3276. 12Be astonished, ye heavensH8064, at this, and shudder; be amazed veryH3966 much, saith Jehovah. 13For my peopleH5971 have committed twoH8147 evils: they have forsaken me, the fountainH4726 of living watersH4325, to hew them out cisternsH877, brokenH7665 cisternsH877 that holdH3557 no waterH4325. 14Is IsraelH3478 a bondman? Is he a home-born [slaveH5650]? WhyH4069 is he becomeH1961 a spoilH957? 15The youngH3715 lionsH3715 roaredH7580 against him, they gaveH5414 forth their voiceH6963, and they madeH5414 his landH776 desolate: his citiesH5892 are burnedH3341, without inhabitantH3427. 16Even the children of Noph and Tahapanes have fed on the crown of thy head. 17Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy 3GodH430, at the timeH6256 he was leading thee in the wayH1870? 18And nowH6258, what hast thou to do with the wayH1870 of EgyptH4714, to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of ShihorH7883? And what hast thou to do with the wayH1870 of AssyriaH804, to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of the RiverH5104? 19Thine own wickednessH7451 chastiseth thee, and thy backslidings reproveH3198 thee: knowH3045 then and seeH7200 that it is an evilH7451 thing and bitterH4751 that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy 4GodH430, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hostsH6635. 20For of old thou hast brokenH7665 thy yokeH5923, [and] burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not serveH5647. For upon every highH1364 hillH1389, and under every green treeH6086, thou bowest downH7665, playingH2181 the harlot. 21And I, — I had plantedH5193 thee a noble vineH1612, wholly a right seedH2233; howH349 then art thou turnedH2015 into the degenerate shoots of a strange vineH1612 unto me? 22For though thou washH3526 thee with nitre, and take thee muchH7235 potash, thine iniquityH5771 is marked before me, saith the LordH136 Jehovah. 23HowH4100 sayest thou, I am not defiledH2930, I have not goneH1980 after the BaalsH1168? SeeH7200 thy wayH1870 in the valleyH1516, acknowledge what thou hast done — a swiftH7031 dromedary traversing her waysH1870! 24— a wildH6501 ass, used to the wildernessH4057, that snuffeth up the windH7307 in her desireH5315! In her ardour, who shall turnH7725 her awayH7725? All they that seekH1245 her will not wearyH3286 themselves; in her monthH2320 they shall findH4672 her. 25WithholdH4513 thy footH7272 from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst, There is no hope; no, for I loveH157 strangersH2114, and after them will I go. 26As a thiefH1590 is ashamedH954 when he is foundH4672, soH3651 shall the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 be ashamedH954 — they, their kingsH4428, their princesH8269, and their priestsH3548, and their prophetsH5030 — 27sayingH559 to a stock, Thou art my fatherH1; and to a stoneH68, Thou hast broughtH3205 me forthH3205; for they have turnedH6437 the backH6437 unto me, and not the faceH6440; and in the timeH6256 of their troubleH7451 they will sayH559, AriseH6965, and saveH3467 us! 28WhereH834 then are thy 5godsH430 that thou hast madeH6213 for thyself? let them ariseH6965, if they can saveH3467 thee in the timeH6256 of thy troubleH7451: for as the numberH4557 of thy citiesH5892, are thy 6godsH430, O JudahH3063. 29Wherefore would ye contendH7378 with me? Ye all have transgressedH6586 against me, saith Jehovah. 30In vain have I smitten your children: they receivedH3947 no correctionH4148. Your own swordH2719 hath devouredH398 your prophetsH5030, like a destroyingH7843 lionH738. 31O generationH1755, mark ye the wordH1697 of Jehovah. Have I beenH1961 a wildernessH4057 unto IsraelH3478, or a landH776 of thick darkness? Wherefore sayH559 my peopleH5971, We have dominion; we will comeH935 no more unto thee? 32Doth a virginH1330 forgetH7911 her ornamentsH5716, a brideH3618 her attire? But my peopleH5971 have forgottenH7911 me daysH3117 without numberH4557. 33HowH4100 dost thou trim thy wayH1870 to seekH1245 loveH160! ThereforeH3651 hast thou alsoH1571 accustomed thy waysH1870 to wickednessH7451. 34Yea, in thy skirtsH3671 is foundH4672 the bloodH1818 of the soulsH5315 of the innocentH5355 poor, whom thou didst not encounter breakingH4290 in, but [it is foundH4672] upon all these. 35And thou sayest, Indeed I am innocent; his angerH639 will turnH7725 from me. Behold, I will enterH8199 into judgmentH8199 with thee because thou sayest, I have not sinnedH2398. 36WhyH4100 dost thou gad about so much, and change thy wayH1870? Thou shalt alsoH1571 be brought to shameH954 by EgyptH4714, as thou wast brought to shameH954 by AssyriaH804. 37Thou shalt indeed goH3318 forthH3318 from her with thy handsH3027 upon thy headH7218; for Jehovah hath rejectedH3988 those thou confidest in, and thou shalt not prosperH6743 by them.
