Jeremiah 2

Judah’s Apostasy

1Now the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 cameH1961 to me, sayingH559, 2“GoH1980 and 1proclaimH7121 in the earsH241 of JerusalemH3389, sayingH559, ‘ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: “I rememberH2142 regarding you the 23devotionH2617 of your youthH5271, Your loveH160 when you wereH3623 aH3623 brideH3623, 4Your followingH1980 afterH310 Me in the wildernessH4057, Through a landH776 not sownH2232.3IsraelH3478 was 5holyH6944 to the LordH3068, The 6firstH7225 of His harvestH8393. 7AllH3605 who ateH398 of it becameH816 guiltyH816; EvilH7463 cameH935 upon them,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068.’”

4HearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LordH3068, houseH1004 of JacobH3290, and allH3605 the familiesH4940 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478. 5ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: “8WhatH4100 injusticeH5766 did your fathersH1 findH4672 in Me, That they wentH7368 farH7368 from Me, And walkedH1980 afterH310 9emptinessH1892 and becameH1891 emptyH1891?6They did not sayH559, ‘WhereH346 is the LordH3068 Who 10broughtH5927 us upH5927 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, Who 11ledH1980 us through the wildernessH4057, Through a landH776 of desertsH6160 and of pitsH7745, Through a landH776 of droughtH6723 and of 12deepH6757 darknessH6757, Through a landH776 that noH3808 oneH376 crossedH5674 And whereH8033 noH3808 personH120 livedH3427?’7I broughtH935 you into the 13fruitfulH3759 landH776 To eatH398 its fruitH6529 and its goodH2898 thingsH2898. But you cameH935 and 14defiledH2930 My landH776, And you madeH7760 My inheritanceH5159 an abominationH8441.8The 15priestsH3548 did not sayH559, ‘WhereH346 is the LordH3068?’ And those who handleH8610 the LawH8451 16did not knowH3045 Me; The 17rulersH7462 also revoltedH6586 against Me, And the 18prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012 by BaalH1168 And walkedH1980 afterH310 19things that were of noH3808 benefitH3276.

9“ThereforeH3651 I will stillH5750 20contendH7378 with you,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “And I will contendH7378 with your sons’H1121 sonsH1121.10For 21crossH5674 to the coastlandsH339 of 22KittimH3794 and seeH7200, And sendH7971 to 23KedarH6938 and observeH995 closelyH3966, And seeH7200 ifH2005 there has beenH1961 anything like thisH2088!11Has a nationH1471 changedH4171 godsH430, When 24they were not godsH430? But My peopleH5971 have 25exchangedH4171 their gloryH3519 For that which is of noH3808 benefitH3276.12BeH8074 appalledH8074 at thisH2088, 26you heavensH8064, And shudderH8175, be veryH3966 desolateH2717,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068.13“For My peopleH5971 have committedH6213 twoH8147 evilsH7451: They have abandonedH5800 Me, The 27fountainH4726 of livingH2416 watersH4325, To carveH2672 outH2672 for themselves 28cisternsH877, BrokenH7665 cisternsH877 That doH3808 not holdH3557 waterH4325.

14“Is IsraelH3478 29a slaveH5650? OrH518 is he a servantH3211 bornH3211 in the homeH1004? WhyH4069 has he becomeH1961 plunderH957?15The youngH3715 30lionsH3715 have roaredH7580 at him, They have 31roaredH5414H6963 loudlyH5414H6963. And they have 32madeH7896 his landH776 a wasteH8047; His citiesH5892 have been destroyedH5327, withoutH1097 inhabitantH3427.16AlsoH1571 the 33menH1121 of 34MemphisH5297 and TahpanhesH8471 Have 35shavedH7462 36your headH6936.17Have you not 37doneH6213 thisH2088 to yourself By your abandoningH5800 the LordH3068 your GodH430 WhenH6256 He 38ledH1980 you in the wayH1870?18But nowH6258 whatH4100 are you doing 39on the roadH1870 to EgyptH4714, Except to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of the 4041NileH7883? Or whatH4100 are you doing on the roadH1870 to AssyriaH804, Except to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of the Euphrates RiverH5104?1942Your own wickednessH7463 will correctH3256 you, And your 43apostasiesH4878 will punishH3198 you; KnowH3045 therefore and seeH7200 that it is evilH7451 and 44bitterH4751 For you to abandonH5800 the LordH3068 your GodH430, And 45the fearH6345 of Me is not in you,” declaresH5002 the LordH136 46GodH3068 of armiesH6635.

20“For longH5769 agoH5769 4748I brokeH7665 your yokeH5923 And toreH5423 offH5423 your restraintsH4147; But you saidH559, ‘I will not serveH5647!’ For on everyH3605 49highH1364 hillH1389 And underH8478 everyH3605 leafyH7488 treeH6086 You have lainH6808 downH6808 as a prostituteH2181.21Yet I 50plantedH5193 you as a choiceH8321 vineH8321, A completelyH3605 faithfulH571 seedH2233. HowH349 then have you turnedH2015 yourself before Me Into the 51degenerateH5493 shoots of a foreignH5237 vineH1612?22AlthoughH3588H518 you 52washH3526 yourself with lyeH5427 And 53useH7235 muchH7235 soapH1287, The 54stainH3799 of your guiltH5771 is beforeH6440 Me,” declaresH5002 the LordH136 55GodH3068.23“56HowH349 can you sayH559, ‘I am not defiledH2930, I have not goneH1980 afterH310 the 57BaalsH1168’? LookH7200 at your wayH1870 in the 58valleyH1516! KnowH3045 whatH4100 you have doneH6213! You are a swiftH7031 youngH1072 camelH1072 59runningH8308 aboutH8308 senselesslyH8308 on her waysH1870,24A 60wildH6501 donkeyH6501 accustomedH3928 to the wildernessH4057, That sniffsH7602 the windH7307 in her passionH185H5315. WhoH4310 can turnH7725 her awayH7725 in her matingH8385 seasonH8385? NoneH3605H3808 who seekH1245 her will growH3286 wearyH3286; In her monthH2320 they will findH4672 her.25KeepH4513 your feetH7272 fromH4513H4480 being bareH3182, And your throatH1627 from thirstH6773; But you saidH559, ‘61It is 62hopelessH2976! NoH3808! For I have 63lovedH157 strangersH2114, And I will walkH1980 afterH310 them.’

26“Like the shameH1322 of a 64thiefH1590 whenH3588 he is discoveredH4672, SoH3651 the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 is shamedH954; They, their kingsH4428, their leadersH8269, Their priestsH3548, and their prophetsH5030,27Who sayH559 to a treeH6086, ‘You are my fatherH1,’ And to a stoneH68, ‘You gaveH3205 me birthH3205.’ For they have turnedH6437 their 65backsH6203 to Me, And not their facesH6440; But in the 66timeH6256 of their 67troubleH7463 they will sayH559, ‘AriseH6965 and saveH3467 us!’28But whereH346 are your 68godsH430 WhichH834 you madeH6213 for yourself? Let them ariseH6965, ifH518 they can 69saveH3467 you In the timeH6256 of your 70troubleH7463! For 71as many as the numberH4557 of your citiesH5892 Are your godsH430, JudahH3063.

29“WhyH4100 do you contendH7378 with Me? You have 72allH3605 revoltedH6586 against Me,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068.30“73In vainH7723 I have struckH5221 your sonsH1121; They did not acceptH3947 disciplineH4148. Your 74swordH2719 has devouredH398 your prophetsH5030 Like a destroyingH7843 lionH743.31You generationH1755, lookH7200 to the wordH1697 of the LordH3068. Have I beenH1961 a wildernessH4057 to IsraelH3478, OrH518 a 75landH776 of thickH3991 darknessH3991? WhyH4069 do My peopleH5971 sayH559, ‘76We are free to roamH7300; We will noH3808 longerH5750 comeH935 to You’?32Can a virginH1330 forgetH7911 her jewelryH5716, Or a brideH3618 her attireH7196? Yet My peopleH5971 have 77forgottenH7911 Me For daysH3117 withoutH369 numberH4557.33HowH4100 wellH3190 you prepareH3190 your wayH1870 To seekH1245 loveH160! ThereforeH3651 evenH1571 to the wickedH7451 womenH7451 You have taughtH3925 your waysH1870.34AlsoH1571 on your skirtsH3671 is foundH4672 The 78lifebloodH1818H5315 of the innocentH5355 poorH34; You did not findH4672 them 79breakingH4290 inH4290. But inH5921 spiteH5921 ofH5921 allH3605 theseH428 thingsH428,35You saidH559, ‘I amH5352 innocentH5352; SurelyH389 His angerH639 is turnedH7725 awayH7725 from me.’ BeholdH2009, I will 80enterH8199 intoH8199 judgmentH8199 with you BecauseH5921 you 81sayH559, ‘I have not sinnedH2398.’36WhyH4100 do you 82goH235 around soH3966 muchH3966 ChangingH8132 your wayH1870? AlsoH1571, 83you will be putH954 toH954 shameH954 by EgyptH4714, JustH3512 asH3512 you were putH954 toH954 shameH954 by 84AssyriaH804.37From thisH2088 place asH1571 wellH1571 you will goH3318 outH3318 With 85your handsH3027 on your headH7218; For the LordH3068 has rejectedH3988 86those in whomH4009 you trustH4009, And you will not prosperH6743 with them.”
