Jeremiah 51
Darby Bible
1ThusH3541 saith Jehovah: Behold, I will raiseH6965 up against BabylonH894, and against them that dwellH3427 in the heartH3820 of those that riseH6965 against me, a destroyingH7843 windH7307; 2and I will sendH7971 unto BabylonH894 strangersH2114, who shall fan her, and shall empty her landH776: for in the dayH3117 of troubleH7451 they shall beH1961 against her roundH5439 about. 3Against him that bendeth let the archer bendH1869 his bowH7198, and against him that lifteth himself up in his coat of mail; and spareH2550 not her youngH970 menH970: destroyH2763 utterly all her hostH6635. 4And the slainH2491 shall fallH5307 in the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778, and they that are thrust through in her streetsH2351. 5For IsraelH3478 is not forsaken, nor JudahH3063 of his 1GodH430, of Jehovah of hostsH6635; for their landH776 is fullH4390 of guiltH817 against the HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478. 6FleeH5127 out of the midstH8432 of BabylonH894, and saveH4422 every manH376 his lifeH5315; be ye not cut off in her iniquityH5771: for this is the timeH6256 of Jehovah's vengeanceH5360: he shall render unto her a recompence. 7BabylonH894 hath been a golden cupH3563 in Jehovah's handH3027, that made all the earthH776 drunken: the nationsH1471 have drunkH7937 of her wineH3196; thereforeH3651 have the nationsH1471 becomeH7937 mad. 8BabylonH894 is suddenlyH6597 fallenH5307 and ruined. Howl over her; takeH3947 balmH6875 for her painH4341, if so be she may be healedH7495. 9We have treated BabylonH894, but she is not healedH7495: forsakeH5800 her, and let us go every oneH376 into his own country; for her judgmentH4941 reacheth unto the heavensH8064, and is liftedH5375 up to the skies. 10Jehovah hath broughtH935 forthH3318 our righteousnessH6666: comeH935, and let us declare in ZionH6726 the workH4639 of Jehovah our 2GodH430. 11Sharpen the arrowsH2671; take the shieldsH7982. Jehovah hath stirredH5782 up the spiritH7307 of the kingsH4428 of the Medes; for his purposeH4209 is against BabylonH894, to destroyH7843 it; for this is the vengeanceH5360 of Jehovah, the vengeanceH5360 of his templeH1964. 12LiftH5375 up a banner towards the wallsH2346 of BabylonH894, makeH6213 the watchH8104 strongH2388, setH6965 the watchmenH8104, prepareH3559 the ambushesH693; for Jehovah hath both devised and done that which he spokeH1696 against the inhabitantsH3427 of BabylonH894. 13Thou that dwellest upon manyH7227 watersH4325, abundant in treasuresH214, thine endH7093 is comeH935, the measure of thy rapacity. 14Jehovah of hostsH6635 hath swornH7650 by himself, I will assuredly fillH4390 thee with menH120, as with caterpillars; and they shall raise a shoutH1959 against thee. 15He hath madeH6213 the earthH776 by his powerH3581, he hath establishedH3559 the worldH8398 by his wisdomH2451, and hath stretchedH5186 out the heavensH8064 by his understandingH8394. 16When he uttereth his voiceH6963, there is a tumultH1995 of watersH4325 in the heavensH8064, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the endH7097 of the earthH776; he maketh lightningsH1300 for the rainH4306, and bringeth forthH3318 the windH7307 out of his treasuresH214. 17Every manH120 is become brutish, so as to have no knowledgeH1847; every founder is put to shame by the graven imageH6459, for his molten imageH6459 is falsehoodH8267, and there is no breathH7307 in them. 18They are vanityH1892, a workH4639 of delusion: in the timeH6256 of their visitation they shall perishH6. 19The portionH2506 of JacobH3290 is not like them; for it is he that hath formedH3335 all thingsH428: and [Israel] is the rodH7626 of his inheritanceH5159: Jehovah of hostsH6635 is his nameH8034. 20Thou art my maul, [my] weaponsH3627 of warH4421: and with thee I will break in pieces the nationsH1471, and I will with thee destroyH7843 kingdomsH4467; 21and with thee I will break in pieces the horseH5483 and his riderH7392; and with thee I will break in pieces the chariotH7393 and its driver; 22and with thee will I break in pieces manH376 and womanH802; and with thee will I break in pieces oldH2205 and youngH5288; and with thee will I break in pieces the youngH5288 manH376 and the maid; 23and with thee will I break in pieces the shepherdH7462 and his flockH5739; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces governorsH6346 and rulers. 24And I will render unto BabylonH894 and to all the inhabitantsH3427 of ChaldeaH3778, in your sight, all their evilH7451 which they have done in ZionH6726, saith Jehovah. 25Behold, I am against thee, mount of destruction, saith Jehovah, which destroyest all the earthH776; and I will stretchH5186 out my handH3027 upon thee, and rollH1556 thee downH5186 from the rocksH5553, and will makeH5414 thee a burningH8316 mountainH2022. 26And they shall not takeH3947 of thee a stoneH68 for a cornerH6438, nor a stoneH68 for foundationsH4146; for thou shalt beH1961 desolate for everH5769, saith Jehovah. 27LiftH5375 up a banner in the landH776, blowH8628 the trumpetH7782 among the nationsH1471, prepare nationsH1471 against her; call together against her the kingdomsH4467 of AraratH780, Minni, and AshkenazH813; appointH6485 a captain against her; cause the horsesH5483 to comeH5927 up as the bristly caterpillars. 28Prepare nationsH1471 against her, the kingsH4428 of the Medes, their governorsH6346 and all their rulers, yea, all the landH776 of their dominionH4475. 29And the landH776 trembleth and is in pain; for the purposes of Jehovah against BabylonH894 do standH6965, to makeH7760 the landH776 of BabylonH894 a desolationH8047, without inhabitantH3427. 30The mightyH1368 menH1368 of BabylonH894 have ceasedH2308 to fightH3898, they are sittingH3427 in the fortresses; their might hath failed, they are becomeH1961 as womenH802: they have setH3341 her dwellingH3427 placesH4908 on fireH3341; her barsH1280 are brokenH7665. 31CourierH7323 runneth to meet courierH7323, and messenger to meet messenger, to announce to the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 that his cityH5892 is takenH3920 from endH7097 to endH7097; 32and the passages are seizedH8610, and the reedy places are burnt with fireH784, and the menH376 of warH4421 are affrighted. 33For thusH3541 saith Jehovah of hostsH6635, the 3GodH430 of IsraelH3478: The daughterH1323 of BabylonH894 is like a threshing-floor, at the timeH6256 of its being troddenH1869; yetH5750 a littleH4592 while, and the timeH6256 of harvestH7105 shall comeH935 for her. 34Nebuchadrezzar the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 hath devouredH398 me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vesselH3627; he hath swallowedH1104 me up like a dragon, he hath filledH4390 his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out. 35The violenceH2555 done to me and to my fleshH7607 be upon BabylonH894, shall the inhabitress of ZionH6726 sayH559; and, My bloodH1818 be upon the inhabitantsH3427 of ChaldeaH3778, shall JerusalemH3389 sayH559. 36ThereforeH3651 thusH3541 saith Jehovah: Behold, I will plead thy causeH7379, and take vengeanceH5360 for thee; and I will dryH3001 up her seaH3220, and makeH3001 her spring dryH3001. 37And BabylonH894 shall becomeH1961 heapsH1530, a dwelling-place of jackalsH8577, an astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitantH3427. 38They shall roarH7580 togetherH3162 like youngH3715 lionsH738, growl as lions' whelps. 39When they are heated, I will prepare their drinkH4960, and I will makeH7896 them drunken, that they may exultH5937, and sleepH8142 a perpetual sleepH8142, and not wake, saith Jehovah. 40I will bringH3381 them downH3381 like lambsH3733 to the slaughterH2873, like ramsH352 with he-goats. 41HowH349 is SheshachH8347 takenH3920! and howH349 is the praiseH8416 of the whole earthH776 seizedH8610! HowH349 is BabylonH894 becomeH1961 an astonishment among the nationsH1471! 42The seaH3220 is comeH5927 up upon BabylonH894: she is coveredH3680 with the multitudeH1995 of its waves. 43Her citiesH5892 are becomeH1961 a desolationH8047, a dryH6723 landH776, and a desertH6160, a landH776 wherein no oneH376 dwelleth, neither doth a sonH1121 of manH376 passH5674 thereby. 44And I will punishH6485 BelH1078 in BabylonH894, and I will bringH3318 forthH3318 out of his mouthH6310 what he hath swallowed up; and the nationsH1471 shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wallH2346 of BabylonH894 is fallenH5307. 45GoH3318 ye out of the midstH8432 of her, my peopleH5971, and deliverH4422 every manH376 his soulH5315 from the fierce angerH639 of Jehovah! 46lestH6435 your heartH3824 faint, and ye fearH3372 for the rumour that shall be heardH8085 in the landH776; for a rumour shall comeH935 [one] yearH8141, and after that a rumour in [another] yearH8141, and violenceH2555 in the earthH776, rulerH4910 against rulerH4910. 47ThereforeH3651 behold, daysH3117 are comingH935 when I will punishH6485 the graven images of BabylonH894; and her whole landH776 shall be putH954 to shameH954, and all her slainH2491 shall fallH5307 in the midstH8432 of her. 48And the heavensH8064 and the earthH776, and all that is therein, shall shoutH7442 aloudH7442 over BabylonH894; for out of the northH6828 the spoilers shall comeH935 against her, saith Jehovah. 49As BabylonH894 caused the slainH2491 of IsraelH3478 to fallH5307, so at BabylonH894 shall fallH5307 the slainH2491 of all the earthH776. 50Ye that have escaped the swordH2719, goH1980, standH5975 not stillH5975: rememberH2142 Jehovah from afarH7350, and let JerusalemH3389 comeH1980 into your mind. 51— We are putH954 to shameH954, for we have heardH8085 reproachH2781; confusion hath coveredH3680 our faceH6440: for strangersH2114 are comeH935 into the sanctuariesH4720 of Jehovah's houseH1004. 52— ThereforeH3651 behold, daysH3117 comeH935, saith Jehovah, that I will punishH6485 her graven images; and throughout her landH776 the woundedH2491 shall groanH602. 53Though BabylonH894 should mount up to the heavensH8064, and though she should fortifyH1219 the heightH4791 of her strengthH5797, yet from me shall spoilers comeH935 unto her, saith Jehovah. 54The soundH6963 of a cryH2201 [cometh] from BabylonH894, and greatH1419 destructionH7667 from the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778; 55for Jehovah spoileth BabylonH894, and he will destroyH6 out of her the greatH1419 voiceH6963; and their waves roarH1993 like greatH1419 watersH4325, the noise of their voiceH6963 resoundeth. 56For the spoiler is comeH935 against her, against BabylonH894, and her mightyH1368 menH1368 are takenH3920; their bowsH7198 are broken in pieces; for Jehovah, the 4GodH410 of recompences, will certainly requite. 57And I will makeH7937 drunkH7937 her princesH8269, and her wiseH2450 menH1368, her governorsH6346, and her rulers, and her mightyH1368 menH1368; and they shall sleepH8142 a perpetual sleepH8142, and not wake, saith the KingH4428, whose nameH8034 is Jehovah of hostsH6635. 58ThusH3541 saith Jehovah of hostsH6635: The broadH7342 wallsH2346 of BabylonH894 shall be utterly laid bare, and her highH1364 gatesH8179 shall be burnedH3341 with fireH784; so that the peoplesH5971 will have laboured in vain, and the nations for the fireH784: and they shall be wearyH3021. 59The wordH1697 that JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 commandedH6680 SeraiahH8304 the sonH1121 of Nerijah, the sonH1121 of MahseiahH4271, whenH834 he went with ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 to BabylonH894 in the fourthH7243 yearH8141 of his reignH4427. Now SeraiahH8304 was chiefH8269 chamberlain. 60And JeremiahH3414 wroteH3789 in a bookH5612 all the evilH7451 that should comeH935 upon BabylonH894, all these wordsH1697 that are writtenH3789 against BabylonH894. 61And JeremiahH3414 saidH559 to SeraiahH8304, When thou comest to BabylonH894, seeH7200 that thou readH7121 all these wordsH1697; 62and sayH559, Jehovah, thou hast spokenH1696 concerningH413 this placeH4725, that thou wilt cutH3772 it off, so that none shall dwellH3427 in it, neither manH120 nor beast, but that it shall beH1961 desolate for everH5769. 63And it shall beH1961, when thou hast endedH3615 readingH7121 this bookH5612, [that] thou shalt bindH7194 a stoneH68 to it, and castH7993 it into the midstH8432 of the EuphratesH6578; 64and shalt sayH559, ThusH3602 shall BabylonH894 sinkH8257, and shall not riseH6965, because of the evilH7451 that I will bringH935 upon it: and they shall be wearyH3286. ThusH3602 far the wordsH1697 of JeremiahH3414.
