1 Corinthians 14
Darby Bible
1Follow after loveG26, and be emulous of spiritualG4152 [manifestations], but ratherG3123 that ye may prophesyG4395. 2For he that speaksG2980 with a tongueG1100 does not speakG2980 to menG444 but to 1GodG2316: for no oneG3762 hearsG191; but in spiritG4151 he speaksG2980 mysteriesG3466. 3But he that prophesiesG4395 speaksG2980 to menG444 [in] edificationG3619, and encouragementG3874, and consolation. 4He that speaksG2980 with a tongueG1100 edifiesG3618 himself; but he that prophesiesG4395 edifiesG3618 [the] assemblyG1577. 5NowG1161 I desireG2309 that ye should all speakG2980 with tonguesG1100, but ratherG3123 that ye should prophesyG4395. But greaterG3173 is he that prophesiesG4395 than he that speaksG2980 with tonguesG1100, unless he interpretG1329, that the assemblyG1577 may receiveG2983 edificationG3619. 6And nowG1161, brethren, if I comeG2064 to you speakingG2980 with tonguesG1100, what shall I profitG5623 you, unless I shall speakG2980 to you either in revelationG602, or in knowledgeG1108, or in prophecyG4394, or in teachingG1322? 7Even lifeless things givingG1325 a soundG5456, whether pipe or harpG2788, if they giveG1325 not distinctionG1293 to the soundsG5456, howG4459 shall it be knownG1097 what is piped or harped? 8For alsoG2532, if the trumpetG4536 giveG1325 an uncertain soundG5456, who shall prepare himself for warG4171? 9ThusG3779 alsoG2532 ye with the tongueG1100, unless ye giveG1325 a distinct speechG3056, howG4459 shall it beG1510 knownG1097 what isG1510 spokenG2980? for ye will beG1510 speakingG2980 to the airG109. 10There areG1510, it may beG1510, so manyG5118 kindsG1085 of voicesG5456 in the worldG2889, and noneG3762 of undistinguishable soundG5456. 11If thereforeG3767 I do not know the powerG1411 of the soundG5456, I shall beG1510 to him that speaksG2980 a barbarian, and he that speaksG2980 a barbarian for me. 12ThusG3779 ye alsoG2532, since ye areG1510 desirous of spiritsG4151, seekG2212 that ye may aboundG4052 for the edificationG3619 of the assemblyG1577. 13Wherefore let him that speaksG2980 with a tongueG1100 prayG4336 that he may interpretG1329. 14For if I prayG4336 with a tongueG1100, my spiritG4151 praysG4336, but my understandingG3563 isG1510 unfruitfulG175. 15What isG1510 it then? I will prayG4336 with the spiritG4151, but I will prayG4336 alsoG2532 with the understandingG3563; I will singG5567 with the spiritG4151, but I will singG5567 alsoG2532 with the understandingG3563. 16Since otherwiseG1893, if thou blessest with [the] spiritG4151, howG4459 shall he who fillsG378 the placeG5117 of the simple [Christian] sayG3004 AmenG281, at thy giving of thanks, since he does not know what thou sayest? 17For thou indeed givest thanksG2168 wellG2573, but the otherG2087 is not edifiedG3618. 18I thankG2168 2GodG2316 I speakG2980 in a tongueG1100 moreG3123 than all of you: 19but in [the] assemblyG1577 I desireG2309 to speakG2980 fiveG4002 wordsG3056 with my understandingG3563, that I may instructG2727 othersG243 alsoG2532, [ratherG235] than tenG3463 thousandG3463 wordsG3056 in a tongueG1100. 20Brethren, be not childrenG3813 in [your] minds, but in maliceG2549 be babes; but in [your] minds be grown [men]. 21It is writtenG1125 in the lawG3551, By peopleG2992 of otherG2087 tongues, and by strange lipsG5491, will I speakG2980 to this peopleG2992; and neither thusG3779 will they hear me, saith the LordG2962. 22So that tonguesG1100 areG1510 for a signG4592, not to those who believeG4100, but to unbelieversG571; but prophecyG4394, not to unbelieversG571, but to those who believeG4100. 23If thereforeG3767 the wholeG3650 assemblyG1577 comeG1525 togetherG4905 in oneG3588 place, and all speakG2980 with tonguesG1100, and simple [persons] enterG1525 in, or unbelieversG571, will not they sayG3004 ye are mad? 24But if all prophesyG4395, and some unbelieverG571 or simple [person] comeG1525 in, he is convictedG1651 of all, he is judged of all; 25the secretsG2927 of his heartG2588 areG1510 manifested; and thusG3779, fallingG4098 upon [his] faceG4383, he will do homage to 3GodG2316, reporting that 4GodG2316 isG1510 indeed amongst you. 26What isG1510 it thenG3767, brethren? wheneverG3752 ye comeG1096 togetherG4905, each [of you] has a psalmG5568, has a teachingG1322, has a tongueG1100, has a revelationG602, has an interpretationG2058. Let all thingsG3956 beG1510 done to edificationG3619. 27If any oneG1520 speakG2980 with a tongueG1100, [let it be] twoG1417, or at the most threeG5140, and separately, and let oneG1520 interpretG1329; 28but if there beG1510 no interpreter, let him beG1510 silentG4601 in [the] assemblyG1577, and let him speakG2980 to himself and to 5GodG2316. 29And let twoG1417 or threeG5140 prophetsG4396 speakG2980, and let the othersG243 judge. 30But if there be a revelation to another sittingG2521 [there], let the firstG4413 be silentG4601. 31For ye can all prophesyG4395 oneG1520 by oneG1520, that all may learnG3129 and all be encouragedG3870. 32And spiritsG4151 of prophetsG4396 are subjectG5293 to prophetsG4396. 33For 6GodG2316 isG1510 not [a 7GodG2316] of disorderG181 but of peaceG1515, as in all the assemblies of the saintsG40. 34Let [your] womenG1135 be silentG4601 in the assemblies, for it is not permittedG2010 to them to speakG2980; but to be in subjectionG5293, as the lawG3551 alsoG2532 saysG3004. 35But if they wishG2309 to learnG3129 anythingG5100, let them askG1905 their ownG2398 husbandsG435 at homeG3624; for it isG1510 a shame for a womanG1135 to speakG2980 in assemblyG1577. 36Did the wordG3056 of 8GodG2316 goG1831 out from you, or did it comeG1831 to you onlyG3441? 37If any oneG5100 thinksG1380 himself to beG1510 a prophetG4396 or spiritualG4152, let him recognise the thingsG3739 that I writeG1125 to you, that it isG1510 [the] Lord's commandment. 38But if any be ignorantG50, let him be ignorantG50. 39So that, brethren, desireG2206 to prophesyG4395, and do not forbidG2967 the speakingG2980 with tonguesG1100. 40But let all thingsG3956 be done comelily and with orderG5010.
