Deuteronomy 20
Darby Bible
1When thou goest out to warH4421 against thine enemiesH341, and seest horsesH5483, and chariotsH7393, [and] a peopleH5971 moreH4480 numerousH7227 than thou, thou shalt not fearH3372 them; for Jehovah thy 1GodH430 is with thee, who broughtH3318 thee up out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 2And it shall beH1961, when ye approach unto the battleH4421, that the priestH3548 shall drawH7126 near and speakH1696 unto the peopleH5971, 3and shall sayH559 unto them, HearH8085, IsraelH3478, ye are approaching this dayH3117 unto battleH4421 against your enemiesH341: let not your heartsH3824 faint, fearH3372 not, and do not tremble, neither be afraidH3372 of them; 4for Jehovah your 2GodH430 is he that goeth with you, to fightH3898 for you against your enemiesH341, to saveH3467 you. 5And the officersH7860 shall speakH1696 unto the peopleH5971, sayingH559, What manH376 is there that hath builtH1129 a newH2319 houseH1004, and hath not dedicated it? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 dedicate it. 6And what manH376 is there that hath plantedH5193 a vineyardH3754, and hath not eaten of it? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 eat of it. 7And what manH376 is there that hath betrothedH781 a wifeH802, and hath not takenH3947 her? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 takeH3947 her. 8And the officersH7860 shall speakH1696 further unto the peopleH5971, and shall sayH559, What manH376 is there that is timid and faint-hearted? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lest his brethren's heartH3824 meltH4549 as well as his heartH3824. 9And it shall beH1961, when the officers have endedH3615 speakingH1696 unto the peopleH5971, that they shall place captains of the hostsH6635 at the headH7218 of the peopleH5971. 10When thou approachest unto a cityH5892 to fightH3898 against it, thou shalt proclaimH7121 peaceH7965 unto it. 11And it shall beH1961, if it make thee answerH6030 of peaceH7965, and openH6605 unto thee, then all the peopleH5971 that areH1961 foundH4672 therein shall beH1961 tributaries unto thee, and they shall serveH5647 thee. 12And if it will not makeH6213 peace with thee, but will makeH6213 warH4421 with thee, then thou shalt besiege it; 13and when Jehovah thy 3GodH430 delivereth it into thy handH3027, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the swordH2719: 14onlyH7535 the womenH802, and the littleH2945 onesH2945, and the cattleH929, and all that shall beH1961 in the cityH5892, all the spoilH7998 thereof, shalt thou takeH962 as bootyH7998 for thyself; and thou shalt eatH398 the spoilH7998 of thine enemiesH341, which Jehovah thy 4GodH430 giveth thee 15ThusH3651 shalt thou do unto all the citiesH5892 that are veryH3966 farH7350 off from thee, which are not of the citiesH5892 of these nationsH1471. 16But of the citiesH5892 of these peoplesH5971 which Jehovah thy 5GodH430 giveth thee for an inheritanceH5159, thou shalt save aliveH2421 nothing that breatheth, 17but shalt utterly devote them to destruction, the HittitesH2850 and the AmoritesH567, the CanaanitesH3669 and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as Jehovah thy 6GodH430 hath commandedH6680 thee; 18that they teachH3925 you not to do according to all their abominationsH8441, which they have done unto their 7godsH430, soH4616 that ye sinH2398 against Jehovah your 8GodH430. 19When thou shalt besiege a cityH5892 manyH7227 daysH3117, in makingH3772 war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroyH7843 the treesH6086 thereof by lifting up an axeH1631 against them; for thou canst eatH398 of them; and thou shalt not cutH3772 them downH3772, for is the treeH6086 of the fieldH7704 a manH120 that it should be besieged? 20OnlyH7535 the treesH6086 which thou knowest are not treesH6086 for meat, thou mayest destroyH7843 and cutH3772 them downH3381, and buildH1129 bulwarks against the cityH5892 that maketh warH4421 with thee, until it fall.
