Isaiah 8
American Standard Version
1And Jehovah saidH559 unto me, TakeH3947 thee a greatH1419 tablet, and writeH3789 upon it with the pen of a man, For Maher-shalal-hash-bazH4122; 2and I will take unto me faithfulH539 witnessesH5707 to record, UriahH223 the priestH3548, and ZechariahH2148 the sonH1121 of Jeberechiah. 3And I went unto the prophetessH5031; and she conceivedH2029, and bare a sonH1121. Then saidH559 Jehovah unto me, CallH7121 his nameH8034 Maher-shalal-hash-bazH4122. 4For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My fatherH1, and, My motherH517, the riches of DamascusH1834 and the spoilH7998 of SamariaH8111 shall be carriedH5375 awayH5375 before the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.
5And Jehovah spake unto me yetH5750 againH5750, sayingH559, 6Forasmuch as this peopleH5971 have refused the watersH4325 of Shiloah that goH1980 softly, and rejoice in RezinH7526 and Remaliah’s sonH1121; 7now thereforeH3651, behold, the LordH136 bringeth up upon them the watersH4325 of the RiverH5104, strong and manyH7227, even the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 and all his gloryH3519: and it shall comeH1980 up over all its channelsH650, and goH1980 over all its banksH1415; 8and it shall sweep onward into JudahH3063; it shall overflowH7857 and passH5674 through; it shall reachH5060 even to the neckH6677; and the stretching out of its wingsH3671 shall fillH4393 the breadthH7341 of thy landH776, O Immanuel.
9Make an uproar, O ye peoplesH5971, and be broken in pieces; and giveH238 earH238, all ye of far countries: girdH247 yourselves, and be broken in pieces; girdH247 yourselves, and be broken in pieces. 10Take counselH6098 together, and it shall be brought to nought; speakH1696 the wordH1697, and it shall not standH6965: for GodH410 is with us. 11For Jehovah spake thusH3541 to me with a strong handH3027, and instructed me not to walk in the wayH1870 of this peopleH5971, sayingH559, 12SayH559 ye not, A conspiracyH7195, concerning all whereof this peopleH5971 shall sayH559, A conspiracyH7195; neither fearH3372 ye their fearH3372, nor be in dread thereof. 13Jehovah of hostsH6635, him shall ye sanctifyH6942; and let him be your fearH4172, and let him be your dread. 14And he shall beH1961 for a sanctuaryH4720; but for a stoneH68 of stumbling and for a rockH6697 of offence to both the housesH1004 of IsraelH3478, for a gin and for a snareH4170 to the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389. 15And manyH7227 shall stumbleH3782 thereon, and fallH5307, and be brokenH7665, and be snared, and be takenH3920.
16Bind thou up the testimonyH8584, sealH2856 the lawH8451 among my disciples. 17And I will waitH2442 for Jehovah, that hideth his faceH6440 from the houseH1004 of JacobH3290, and I will look for him. 18Behold, I and the childrenH3206 whom Jehovah hath givenH5414 me are for signsH226 and for wondersH4159 in IsraelH3478 from Jehovah of hostsH6635, who dwelleth in mount ZionH6726.
19And when they shall sayH559 unto you, SeekH1875 unto them that have familiar spirits and unto the wizards, that chirp and that mutter: should not a peopleH5971 seekH1875 unto their GodH430? on behalf of the living should they seekH1875 unto the deadH4191? 20To the lawH8451 and to the testimonyH8584! if they speak not according to this wordH1697, surely there is no morning for them. 21And they shall passH5674 through it, sore distressed and hungryH7457; and it shall come to passH5674 that, when they shall beH1961 hungryH7457, they shall fret themselves, and curseH7043 by their kingH4428 and by their GodH430, and turnH6437 their faces upwardH4605: 22and they shall look unto the earthH776, and, behold, distressH6869 and darknessH2825, the gloomH653 of anguish; and into thick darknessH2825 they shall be drivenH5080 awayH5080.
