Isaiah 5
American Standard Version
1Let me singH7891 for my wellbeloved a songH7892 of my beloved touching his vineyardH3754. My wellbeloved had a vineyardH3754 in a very fruitful hill: 2and he digged it, and gathered out the stonesH5619 thereof, and plantedH5193 it with the choicest vine, and builtH1129 a towerH4026 in the midstH8432 of it, and alsoH1571 hewed out a winepressH3342 therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
3And nowH6258, O inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389 and menH376 of JudahH3063, judgeH8199, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyardH3754. 4What could have been done more to my vineyardH3754, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? 5And nowH6258 I will tell you what I will do to my vineyardH3754: I will take awayH5493 the hedgeH4881 thereof, and it shall beH1961 eaten up; I will breakH6555 down the wallH1447 thereof, and it shall beH1961 trodden downH6555: 6and I will lay it waste; it shall not be prunedH2168 nor hoed; but there shall comeH5927 up briers and thorns: I will also commandH6680 the cloudsH5645 that they rainH4306 no rainH4306 upon it. 7For the vineyardH3754 of Jehovah of hostsH6635 is the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, and the menH376 of JudahH3063 his pleasant plant: and he looked for justiceH4941, but, behold, oppression; for righteousnessH6666, but, behold, a cryH6818.
8WoeH1945 unto them that join houseH1004 to houseH1004, that lay fieldH7704 to fieldH7704, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwellH3427 aloneH905 in the midstH7130 of the landH776! 9In mine earsH241 saith Jehovah of hostsH6635, Of a truth manyH7227 housesH1004 shall beH1961 desolate, even greatH1419 and fair, without inhabitantH3427. 10For tenH6235 acres of vineyardH3754 shall yield oneH259 bathH1324, and a homer of seedH2233 shall yield but an ephahH374. 11WoeH1945 unto them that riseH7925 up earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, that they may follow strongH7941 drinkH7941; that tarry late into the night, till wineH3196 inflame them! 12And the harpH3658 and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wineH3196, are in their feasts; but they regard not the workH4639 of Jehovah, neither have they consideredH7200 the operation of his handsH3027.
13ThereforeH3651 my peopleH5971 are goneH1540 into captivity for lack of knowledgeH1847; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitudeH1995 are parched with thirstH6772. 14ThereforeH3651 SheolH7585 hath enlargedH7337 its desireH5315, and openedH6473 its mouthH6310 without measure; and their glory, and their multitudeH1995, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth among them, descend into it. 15And the mean manH376 is bowedH7817 downH7817, and the great manH376 is humbled, and the eyesH5869 of the lofty are humbled: 16but Jehovah of hostsH6635 is exaltedH1361 in justiceH4941, and GodH410 the HolyH6918 OneH6918 is sanctifiedH6942 in righteousnessH6666. 17Then shall the lambsH3532 feed as in their pastureH1699, and the wasteH2723 placesH2723 of the fat ones shall wanderers eatH398.
18WoeH1945 unto them that drawH4900 iniquityH5771 with cordsH5688 of falsehoodH7723, and sinH2403 as it were with a cartH5699 rope; 19that sayH559, Let him makeH3045 speed, let him hastenH4116 his workH4639, that we may seeH7200 it; and let the counselH6098 of the HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478 drawH7126 nigh and comeH935, that we may knowH3045 it! 20WoeH1945 unto them that call evilH7451 goodH2896, and goodH2896 evilH7451; that putH7760 darknessH2822 for lightH216, and lightH216 for darknessH2822; that putH7760 bitterH4751 for sweetH4966, and sweetH4966 for bitterH4751! 21WoeH1945 unto them that are wiseH2450 in their own eyesH5869, and prudent in their own sight! 22WoeH1945 unto them that are mightyH1368 to drinkH8354 wineH3196, and menH376 of strengthH2428 to mingle strongH7941 drinkH8354; 23that justifyH6663 the wickedH7563 for a bribeH7810, and take awayH5493 the righteousnessH6666 of the righteousH6662 from him!
24ThereforeH3651 as the tongueH3956 of fireH784 devoureth the stubbleH7179, and as the dryH2842 grassH2842 sinketh down in the flameH3852, soH3651 their rootH8328 shall beH1961 as rottenness, and their blossomH6525 shall goH5927 up as dustH80; because they have rejectedH3988 the lawH8451 of Jehovah of hostsH6635, and despised the wordH565 of the HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478. 25ThereforeH3651 is the angerH639 of Jehovah kindled against his peopleH5971, and he hath stretchedH5186 forth his handH3027 against them, and hath smitten them; and the mountainsH2022 trembleH7264, and their dead bodies are as refuse in the midstH7130 of the streetsH2351. For all this his angerH639 is not turnedH7725 awayH7725, but his handH3027 is stretchedH5186 out stillH5750.
26And he will liftH5375 up an ensign to the nationsH1471 from farH7350, and will hissH8319 for them from the endH7097 of the earthH776; and, behold, they shall comeH935 with speed swiftly. 27None shall be wearyH5889 nor stumbleH3782 among them; none shall slumberH5123 nor sleepH3462; neither shall the girdle of their loinsH2504 be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken: 28whose arrowsH2671 are sharp, and all their bowsH7198 bentH1869; their horses’ hoofsH6541 shall be accountedH2803 as flint, and their wheelsH1534 as a whirlwind: 29their roaringH7580 shall be like a lionessH3833, they shall roarH7580 like youngH3715 lionsH3715; yea, they shall roarH7580, and lay holdH270 of the preyH2964, and carry it awayH5337 safe, and there shall be none to deliverH5337. 30And they shall roar against them in that dayH3117 like the roaring of the seaH3220: and if one look unto the landH776, behold, darknessH2822 and distressH6862; and the lightH216 is darkened in the clouds thereof.
