Isaiah 8

1Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “TakeH3947 a largeH1419 scrollH1549 and writeH3789 onH5921 it with an ordinaryH5821 stylusH2747: Maher-shalal-hash-bazH4122.2 2And I will appointH5749 for Myself trustworthyH539 witnessesH5707—UriahH223 the priestH3548 and ZechariahH2148 sonH1121 of JeberekiahH3000.”

3And I had relationsH7126 withH413 the prophetessH5031, and she conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121. The LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “NameH7121 himH8034 Maher-shalal-hash-bazH4122. 4ForH3588 beforeH2962 the boyH5288 knowsH3045 how to cryH7121 ‘FatherH1’ or ‘MotherH517,’ the wealthH2428 of DamascusH1834 andH853 the plunderH7998 of SamariaH8111 will be carried offH5375 byH6440 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.”

5And the LORDH3068 spokeH1696 toH413 meH3254 furtherH5750H559:

6“BecauseH3282H3588 thisH2088 peopleH5971 has rejectedH3988the gentlyH328 flowingH1980 watersH4325 of ShiloahH7975and rejoicedH4885 in RezinH7526and the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425,7the LordH136 will surelyH2009 bringH5927 against themH5921the mightyH6099 floodwatersH7227H853H4325 of the EuphratesH51043—the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 and allH3605 his pompH3519.
It will overflowH5927H5921H3605 its channelsH650and overrunH1980H5921H3605 its banksH1415.8It will pourH2498 into JudahH3063,swirlingH7857 and sweeping over itH5674,reachingH5060H1961 up toH5704 the neckH6677;its spreading streamsH4298H3671 will coverH4393your entireH7341 landH776, O ImmanuelH6005!4
9Huddle togetherH7489,5 O peoplesH5971, and be shatteredH2865;pay attentionH238, allH3605 you distantH4801 landsH776;prepare for battleH247, and be shatteredH2865;prepare for battleH247, and be shatteredH2865!10DeviseH5779 a planH6098, but it will be thwartedH6565;stateH1696 a proposalH1697, but it will notH3808 happenH6965.ForH3588 GodH410 is with usH5973.6”

A Call to Fear God

(Ecclesiastes 8:10–13)

11ForH3588 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 has spokenH559 to meH413 with a strongH2393 handH3027, instructing meH3256 not to walkH1980 in the wayH1870 of thisH2088H559 peopleH5971:

12“Do notH3808 callH559 conspiracyH7195everythingH3605 theseH2088 peopleH5971 regardH559 as conspiracyH7195.Do notH3808 fearH3372 what they fearH4172;7do notH3808 live in dreadH6206.813The LORDH3068 of HostsH6635 is the OneH853you shall regard as holyH6942.Only HeH1931 should be fearedH4172;only HeH1931 should be dreadedH6206.14And He will beH1961 a sanctuaryH4720—but to bothH8147 housesH1004 of IsraelH3478a stoneH68 of stumblingH5063 and a rockH6697 of offenseH4383,9to the dwellersH3427 of JerusalemH3389a trapH6341 and a snareH4170.15ManyH7227 will stumbleH3782 over these;they will fallH5307 and be brokenH7665;they will be ensnaredH3369 and capturedH3920.”
16Bind upH6887 the testimonyH8584and sealH2856 the lawH8451 among my disciplesH3928.17I will waitH2442 for the LORDH3068,who is hidingH5641 His faceH6440 from the houseH1004 of JacobH3290.I will put my trustH6960 in Him.10

18HereH2009 am IH595, and the childrenH3206 the LORDH3068 has givenH5414 me11 as signsH226 and symbolsH4159 in IsraelH3478 fromH5973 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, who dwellsH7931 on MountH2022 ZionH6726.

Darkness and Light

19WhenH3588 men tellH559 youH413 to consultH1875H413 mediumsH178H413 and spiritistsH3049 who whisperH6850 and mutterH1897, shouldn’tH3808 a peopleH5971H413 consultH1875 their GodH430 instead? Why consult the deadH4191 on behalf ofH1157 the livingH2416H413? 20To the lawH8451 and to the testimonyH8584! IfH518 they do notH3808 speakH559 according to thisH2088 wordH1697, they have noH369 light of dawnH7837.

21They will roam the landH5674, dejectedH7185 and hungryH7457H1961. WhenH3588 they are famishedH7456, they will become enragedH7107; and lookingH6437 upwardH4605, they will curseH7043 their kingH4428 and their GodH430. 22Then they will lookH5027 toH413 the earthH776 and seeH2009 only distressH6869 and darknessH2825 and the gloomH4588 of anguishH6695. And they will be drivenH5080 into utter darknessH653.
