Isaiah 8

New American Standard Bible 1995

Damascus and Samaria Fall

1Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, “TakeH3947 for yourself a largeH1419 tabletH1549 and 1writeH3789 on it 2in ordinaryH582 lettersH2747: 34SwiftH4116 is the bootyH7998, speedyH2363 is the preyH957. 2And 5I will takeH5749 to Myself faithfulH539 witnessesH5707 for testimonyH5749, 6UriahH223 the priestH3548 and ZechariahH2148 the sonH1121 of JeberechiahH3000.” 3So I approachedH7126 the prophetessH5031, and she conceivedH2029 and gaveH3205 birthH3205 to a sonH1121. Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, “NameH7121H8034 him 78Maher-shalal-hash-bazH4122; 4for 9beforeH2962 the boyH5288 knowsH3045 how to cryH7121 out ‘My fatherH1’ or ‘My motherH517,’ the wealthH2428 of 10DamascusH1834 and the spoilH7998 of SamariaH8111 will be carriedH5375 away beforeH6440 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.”

5AgainH3254 the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to me furtherH5750, sayingH559,6“InasmuchH3282H3588 as theseH2088 peopleH5971 have 11rejectedH3988 the gentlyH328 flowingH1980 watersH4325 of ShiloahH7975 And rejoiceH4885 in 12RezinH7526 and the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425;7Now thereforeH3651, beholdH2009, the LordH136 is about to bringH5927 on them the 13strongH6099 and abundantH7227 watersH4325 of the 1415EuphratesH5104, Even the 16kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 and allH3605 his gloryH3519; And it will 17riseH5927 up overH5921 allH3605 its channelsH650 and goH1980 overH5921 allH3605 its banksH1415.8Then 18it will sweepH2498 on into JudahH3063, it will overflowH7857 and passH5674 throughH5674, It will 19reachH5060 evenH5704 to the neckH6677; And the spreadH4298 of its wingsH3671 will 20fillH4393 the breadthH7341 of 21your landH776, O 22ImmanuelH6005.

A Believing Remnant

9“23Be brokenH7489, O peoplesH5971, and be 2425shatteredH2865; And giveH238 earH238, allH3605 remoteH4801 placesH4801 of the earthH776. GirdH247 yourselves, yet be 26shatteredH2865; GirdH247 yourselves, yet be 27shatteredH2865.1028DeviseH5779 a planH6098, but it will be thwartedH6565; StateH1696 a 29proposalH1697, but 30it will not standH6965, For 3132GodH410 is with us.”

11For thusH3541 the LordH3068 spokeH559 to me 33with 34mightyH2393 powerH3027 and instructedH3256 me 35not to walkH1980 in the wayH1870 of thisH2088 peopleH5971, sayingH559,12“You are not to sayH559, ‘It is a 36conspiracyH7195!’ In regard to allH3605 that thisH2088 peopleH5971 callH559 a conspiracyH7195, And 37you are not to fearH3372 38whatH4172 they fearH4172 or be in dreadH6206 of it.13It is the 39LordH3068 of hostsH6635 40whom you should regardH6942 as holyH6942. And He shall be your fearH4172, And He shall be your dreadH6206.14Then He shall becomeH1961 a 41sanctuaryH4720; But to bothH8147 the housesH1004 of IsraelH3478, a 42stoneH68 to strikeH5063 and a rockH6697 to stumbleH4383 over, And a snareH6341 and a 43trapH4170 for the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389.15ManyH7227 44will stumbleH3782 over them, Then they will fallH5307 and be brokenH7665; They will even be snaredH3369 and caughtH3920.”

1645BindH6887 up the testimonyH8584, 46sealH2856 the 47lawH8451 among 48my disciplesH3928. 17And I will 49waitH2442 for the LordH3068 50who is hidingH5641 His faceH6440 from the houseH1004 of JacobH3290; I will even lookH6960 eagerlyH6960 for Him. 1851BeholdH2009, I and the childrenH3206 whomH834 the LordH3068 has givenH5414 me are for 52signsH226 and wondersH4159 in IsraelH3478 from the LordH3068 of hostsH6635, who 53dwellsH7931 on MountH2022 ZionH6726.

19WhenH3588 they sayH559 to you, “54ConsultH1875 the mediumsH178 and the spiritistsH3049 who whisperH6850 and mutterH1897,” should not a peopleH5971 55consultH1875 their GodH430? Should they 56consult the deadH4191 on behalfH1157 of the livingH2416? 20To the 5758lawH8451 and to the testimonyH8584! IfH518 they do not speakH559 according to thisH2088 wordH1697, it is becauseH834 59they haveH369 noH369 dawnH7837. 21They will passH5674 through 60the land 61hard-pressedH7185 and famishedH7457, and it will turnH6437 out that whenH3588 they are hungryH7456, they will be enragedH7107 and curseH7043 62their kingH4428 and their GodH430 as they faceH6437 upwardH4605. 22Then they will 63lookH5027 to the earthH776, and beholdH2009, distressH6869 and darknessH2825, the gloomH4588 of anguishH6695; and they will be 64drivenH5080 awayH5080 into darknessH653.
