Isaiah 5
(Luke 13:6–9)
My belovedH3039 hadH1961 a vineyardH3754on a very fertileH1121H8081 hillH7161.2He dug it upH5823 and cleared the stonesH5619and plantedH5193 the finest vinesH8321.He builtH1129 a watchtowerH4026 in the middleH8432andH1571 dug outH2672 a winepress as wellH3342.
He waited forH6960 the vineyard to yieldH6213 good grapesH6025,but the fruit it producedH6213 was sourH891!
3“And nowH6258, O dwellersH3427 of JerusalemH3389and menH376 of JudahH3063,I exhortH4994 you to judgeH8199between MeH996 and My vineyardH3754.4WhatH4100 moreH5750 could have been doneH6213 for My vineyardH3754thanH3808 I have doneH6213 for it?WhyH4069, when I expectedH6960 sweet grapesH6025,did it bring forthH6213 sour fruitH891?
I will take awayH5493 its hedgeH4881,and it will beH1961 consumedH1197;I will tear downH6555 its wallH1447,and it will beH1961 trampledH4823.6I will makeH7896 it a wastelandH1326,neitherH3808 prunedH2168 norH3808 cultivatedH5737,and thornsH7898 and briersH8068 will grow upH5927.I will commandH6680 the cloudsH5645that rainH4306 shall not fallH4305 on itH5921.”
Woes to the Wicked
7ForH3588 the vineyardH3754 of the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635 is the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, and the menH376 of JudahH3063 are the plantH5194 of His delightH8191. He lookedH6960 for justiceH4941, but sawH2009 bloodshedH4939; for righteousnessH6666, but heardH2009 a cry of distressH6818.
8WoeH1945 to you who addH5060 houseH1004 to houseH1004and joinH7126 fieldH7704 to fieldH7704untilH5704 noH657 placeH4725 is leftand you liveH3427 aloneH905 inH7130 the landH776.
“SurelyH518H3808 manyH7227 housesH1004 will becomeH1961 desolateH8047,great mansionsH1419H2896 left unoccupiedH369H3427.10ForH3588 tenH6235 acresH6776 of vineyardH3754will yieldH6213 but aH259 bathH1324 of wine,1and a homerH2563 of seedH2233only an ephahH374 of grain.2”
11WoeH1945 to those who rise earlyH7925 in the morningH1242in pursuit ofH7291 strong drinkH7941,who lingerH309 into the eveningH5399,to be inflamedH1814 by wineH3196.12At their feastsH4960 are the lyreH3658 and harpH5035,tambourinesH8596 and flutesH2485 and wineH3196.They disregardH3808 the actionsH6467 of the LORDH3068and failH3808 to seeH7200 the workH4639 of His handsH3027.
13ThereforeH3651 My peopleH5971 will go into exileH1540for their lackH1097 of understandingH1847;their dignitariesH3519H4962 are starvingH7458and their massesH1995 are parchedH6704 with thirstH6772.14ThereforeH3651 SheolH7585 enlargesH7337 its throatH5315and opensH6473 wide its enormousH1097H2706 jawsH6310,and down goH3381 Zion’s noblesH1926 and massesH1995,her revelersH7588 and carousersH5938!
15So mankindH120 will be brought lowH7817, and each manH376 humbledH8213;the arrogantH1364 will lowerH8213 their eyesH5869.16But the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635 will be exaltedH1361 by His justiceH4941,and the holyH6918 GodH410 will show Himself holyH6942 in righteousnessH6666.17LambsH3532 will grazeH7462 as in their own pasturesH1699,and strangersH14813 will feedH398 in the ruinsH2723 of the wealthyH4220.
18WoeH1945 to those who drawH4900 iniquityH5771 with cordsH2256 of deceitH7723and pull sin alongH2403 with cartH5699 ropesH5688,19to those who sayH559, “Let Him hurryH4116 and hasten His workH4639H2363so thatH4616 we may see itH7200H7126!Let the planH6098 of the HolyH6918 One of IsraelH3478 comeH935so that we may know itH3045!”
20WoeH1945 to those who callH559 evilH7451 goodH2896and goodH2896 evilH7451,who turnH7760 darknessH2822 to lightH216and lightH216 to darknessH2822,who replaceH7760 bitterH4751 with sweetH4966and sweetH4966 with bitterH4751.
21WoeH1945 to those who are wiseH2450 in their own eyesH5869and cleverH995 inH5048 their own sightH6440.
22WoeH1945 to those who are heroesH1368 in drinkingH8354 wineH3196and championsH582H2428 in mixingH4537 strong drinkH7941,23who acquitH6663 the guiltyH7563 forH6118 a bribeH7810and depriveH5493 the innocentH6662H4480 of justiceH6666.
24ThereforeH3651, as a tongueH3956 of fireH784 consumesH398 the strawH7179,and as dry grassH2842 shrivelsH7503 in the flameH3852,so their rootsH8328 will decayH1961H4716and their blossomsH6525 will blow awayH5927 like dustH80;forH3588 they have rejectedH3988 the instructionH8451 of the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635and despisedH5006 the wordH565 of the HolyH6918 One of IsraelH3478.25ThereforeH5921H3651 the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 burnsH2734 against His peopleH5971;His handH3027 is raisedH5186 against themH5921 to strike them downH5221.The mountainsH2022 quakeH7264,and the corpsesH5038 lieH1961 like refuseH5478 inH7130 the streetsH2351.
Despite allH3605 thisH2063, His angerH639 is notH3808 turned awayH7725;His handH3027 is stillH5750 upraisedH5186.
26He liftsH5375 a bannerH5251 for the distantH7350 nationsH1471and whistlesH8319 for those at the endsH7097 of the earthH776.BeholdH2009—how speedilyH4120 and swiftlyH7031 they comeH935!27NoneH369 of them grows wearyH5889 or stumblesH3782;noH3808 one slumbersH5123 orH3808 sleepsH3462.NoH3808 beltH232H2504 is looseH6605and noH3808 sandalH5275 strapH8288 is brokenH5423.28Their arrowsH2671 are sharpenedH8150,and allH3605 their bowsH7198 are strungH1869.The hoovesH6541 of their horsesH5483 are like flintH6862H2803;their chariot wheelsH1534 are like a whirlwindH5492.29Their roaringH7581 is like that of a lionH3833;they roarH7580 like young lionsH3715.They growlH5098 and seizeH270 their preyH2964;they carry it awayH6403, and no oneH369 can rescue itH5337.30In thatH1931 dayH3117 they will roarH5098 over itH5921,like the roaringH5100 of the seaH3220.If one looksH5027 over the landH776,he will seeH2009 darknessH2822 and distressH6862;even the lightH216 will be obscuredH2821 by cloudsH6183.
