6and Jacob’sἸακώβ.¶IakōbG2384wellπηγὴpēgēG4077was thereἐκεῖekeiG1563.SoοὖνounG3767JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424,tiredκεκοπιακὼςkekopiakōsG2872from His journeyὁδοιπορίαςhodoiporiasG3597,was justοὕτωςhoutōsG3779sittingἐκαθέζετοekathezetoG2516by the wellπηγῇ·pēgēaG4077.It was aboutὡςhōsG5613the sixthἕκτη.¶hektēG1623hourὥραhōraG5610.

8For HisdisciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101had goneG565awayἀπεληλύθεισανapelēlutheisanG565tothe cityπόλινpolinG4172to buyἀγοράσωσιν.agorasōsinG59foodτροφὰςtrophasG5160.

9SoοὖνounG3767theSamaritanΣαμαρῖτις·SamaritisG4542womanγυνὴgunēG1135saidλέγειlegeiG3004to Him, “HowπῶςpōsG4459is it that You, thoughYou are a JewἸουδαῖοςIoudaiosG2453,are askingαἰτεῖςaiteisG154me for a drinkπεῖνpeinG4095, thoughI amG1510a SamaritanΣαμαρίτιδοςSamaritidosG4542womanγυναικὸςgunaikosG1135?” (ForJewsἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiG2453doG4798not associateG4798withG4798SamaritansΣαμαρίταις.¶SamaritaisG4541.)

10JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424repliedἈπεκρίθηApekrithēG611 G3004to her,“IfεἰeiG1487you knewG3609the giftδωρεὰνdōreanG1431of GodθεοῦtheouG2316,and whoτίςtisG5101it is who is sayingλέγωνlegōnG3004to you, ‘GiveδόςdosG1325Me a drinkπεῖν,peinG4095,’you would have askedᾔτησαςētēsasG154Him, and He would have givenἔδωκενedōkenG1325youlivingζῶν.zōnG2198waterὕδωρhudōrG5204.”

11She saidλέγειlegeiG3004to Him, “Sirκύριε,kurieG2962,You haveἔχεις,echeisG2192noοὔτεouteG3777bucketἄντλημαantlēmaG502and the wellφρέαρphrearG5421is deepβαθύ·bathuG901;whereπόθενpothenG4159thenοὖνounG3767do You getἔχειςecheisG2192thislivingζῶν;zōnG2198water?

12You are not greaterμείζωνmeizōnG3173than our fatherπατρὸςpatrosG3962JacobἸακώβ,IakōbG2384,are You, whoὃςhosG3739gaveἔδωκενedōkenG1325us the wellφρέαρ,phrearG5421and drankἔπιενepienG4095of it himselfG846,and his sonsυἱοὶhuioiG5207and his cattleθρέμματαthremmataG2353?”

13JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424answeredἈπεκρίθηApekrithēG611and saidG3004to her,“EveryoneπᾶςpasG3956who drinksπίνωνpinōnG4095of thisτούτουtoutouG3778waterὕδατοςhudatosG5204will beG1372thirstyG1372againπάλιν.palinG3825;

14but whoeverἂνanG3739 G302drinksπίῃpiēG4095of the waterὕδατοςhudatosG5204that I will giveδώσωdōsōG1325himshall neverοὐ μὴou mēG3756 G3361beG1372thirstyG1372;but the waterὕδωρhudōrG5204that I will giveδώσωdōsōG1325him will becomeγενήσεταιgenēsetaiG1096in him a fountainπηγὴpēgēG4077of waterὕδατοςhudatosG5204springingG242upG242toeternalαἰώνιον.¶aiōnionG166lifeζωὴνzōēnG2222.”

15The womanγυνή·gunēG1135saidΛέγειLegeiG3004to Him, “Sirκύριε,kurieG2962,giveδόςdosG1325me thisτοῦτοtoutoG3778waterὕδωρhudōrG5204soG2443thatG2443I will not be thirstyδιψῶdipsōG1372,norμηδὲmēdeG3366comeδιέρχωμαιdierchōmaiG1330all the wayhereἐνθάδεenthadeG1759to drawἀντλεῖν.antleinG501water.”

16He saidλέγειlegeiG3004to her,“GoὕπαγεhupageG5217,callφώνησονphōnēsonG5455your husbandἄνδραandraG435and comeἐλθὲeltheG2064hereἐνθάδε.enthadeG1759.”

17The womanγυνὴgunēG1135answeredἀπεκρίθηapekrithēG611and saidΛέγειLegeiG3004to Him, “I haveἔχωechōG2192noοὐκoukG3756husbandἄνδρα.¶andraG435.”JesusἸησοῦς·IēsousG2424saidG3004to her,“You have correctlyκαλῶςkalōsG2573saidG3004, ‘I haveἔχω·echōG2192noοὐκoukG3756husbandἄνδραandraG435’;

18for you haveG2192hadG2192fiveπέντεpenteG4002husbandsἄνδραςandrasG435,and the one whomὃνhonG3739you nowνῦνnunG3568haveG2192is not your husbandἀνήρ·anērG435;thisτοῦτοtoutoG3778whichyou have saidG3004istrueἀληθὲςalēthesG227.”

19The womanγυνή·gunēG1135saidΛέγειLegeiG3004to Him, “Sirκύριε,kurieG2962,I perceiveθεωρῶtheōrōG2334that You area prophetπροφήτηςprophētēsG4396.

20Our fathersπατέρεςpateresG3962worshipedπροσεκύνησαν,prosekunēsanG4352onthisτούτῳtoutōG3778mountainὄρειoreiG3735, and yet you JewssayλέγετεlegeteG3004thatin JerusalemἹεροσολύμοιςHi'erosolumoisG2414is the placeτόποςtoposG5117whereὅπουhopouG3699one mustδεῖ.¶deiG1163worshipπροσκυνεῖνproskuneinG4352.”

21JesusἸησοῦς·IēsousG2424saidΛέγειLegeiG3004to her,“BelieveπίστευέpisteueG4100Me, womanγύναι,gunaiG1135, thata timeὥραhōraG5610is comingἔρχεταιerchetaiG2064whenὅτεhoteG3753you will worshipπροσκυνήσετεproskunēseteG4352the Fatherπατρί.patriG3962neitherοὔτεouteG3777on thisτούτῳtoutōG3778mountainὄρειoreiG3735norοὔτεouteG3777in JerusalemἹεροσολύμοιςHi'erosolumoisG2414.

22You SamaritansworshipπροσκυνεῖτεproskuneiteG4352whatὃhoG3739you do not knowG3609;we worshipπροσκυνοῦμενproskunoumenG4352whatὃhoG3739we do knowG3609,becauseὅτιhotiG3754salvationσωτηρίαsōtēriaG4991is from the JewsἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnG2453.

23Buta timeὥραhōraG5610is comingἔρχεταιerchetaiG2064, andeven nowνῦνnunG3568has arrivedἐστιν,estinG1510,whenὅτεhoteG3753the trueἀληθινοὶalēthinoiG228worshipersπροσκυνηταὶproskunētaiG4353will worshipπροσκυνήσουσινproskunēsousinG4352the FatherπατρὶpatriG3962in spiritπνεύματιpneumatiG4151and truthἀληθείᾳ·alētheiaG225;for suchτοιούτουςtoioutousG5108peopleG5108the FatherπατὴρpatērG3962seeksζητεῖzēteiG2212to beHis worshipersπροσκυνοῦνταςproskunountasG4352.

24Godθεός,theosG2316isspiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151,and thoseG3588who worshipπροσκυνοῦνταςproskunountasG4352Him mustδεῖdeiG1163worshipπροσκυνεῖν.¶proskuneinG4352in spiritπνεύματιpneumatiG4151and truthἀληθείᾳalētheiaG225.”

25The womanγυνή·gunēG1135saidΛέγειLegeiG3004to Him, “I knowG3609thatMessiahΜεσσίαςMessiasG3323is comingἔρχεται,erchetaiG2064(He who is calledλεγόμενοςlegomenosG3004Christχριστός,christosG5547);whenὅτανhotanG3752thatG1565OneG1565comesἔλθῃelthēG2064,He will declareἀναγγελεῖanangeleiG312allG537thingsἅπαντα.hapantaG537to us.”

26JesusἸησοῦς·IēsousG2424saidλέγειlegeiG3004to her, “I am He,the One speakingλαλῶνlalōnG2980to you.”

27And at thisτούτῳtoutōG3778pointἐπὶepiG1909HisdisciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101cameἦλθανēlthanG2064,and they were amazedἐθαύμαζονethaumazonG2296that He had been speakingἐλάλει·elaleiG2980with a womanγυναικὸςgunaikosG1135,yetμέντοιmentoiG3305noG3762oneοὐδεὶςoudeisG3762saidG3004, “WhatτίtiG5101are You seekingζητεῖς,zēteisG2212?”orἢēG2228, “WhyτίtiG5101are You speakingλαλεῖςlaleisG2980with her?”

28SoοὖνounG3767the womanγυνὴgunēG1135leftἈφῆκενAphēkenG863her waterpotὑδρίανhudrianG5201and wentἀπῆλθενapēlthenG565into the cityπόλινpolinG4172,and saidλέγειlegeiG3004to the peopleἀνθρώποις·anthrōpoisG444,

29“Comeδεῦτε,deuteG1205,seeG3708a ManἄνθρωπονanthrōponG444whoὃςhosG3739toldG3004me allG3956the thingsπάνταpantaG3956that I have doneἐποίησα·epoiēsaG4160;thisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is not theChristχριστός;christosG5547, is He?”

30They leftἐξῆλθονexēlthonG1831the cityπόλεωςpoleōsG4172and were comingἤρχοντοērchontoG2064to Him.
