Context of 1 Corinthians 6:11

9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 12All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 6:11

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11And such were some of you - It was not with the prospect of collecting saints that the apostles went about preaching the Gospel of the kingdom. None but sinners were to be found over the face of the earth; they preached that sinners might be converted unto God, made saints, and constituted into a Church; and this was the effect as well as the object of their preaching. But ye are washed - Several suppose that the order in which the operations of the grace…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And such - Such drunkards, lascivious, and covetous persons. This shows: (1) The exceeding grace of God that could recover even such persons from sins so debasing and degrading. (2) it shows that we are not to despair of reclaiming the most abandoned and wretched people. (3) it is well for Christians to look back on what they once were. It will produce: (a)humility, (b)gratitude, (c)adeep sense of the sovereign mercy of God, (d)an earnest desire that…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-11Verses 9-11 The Corinthians are warned against many great evils, of which they had formerly been guilty. There is much force in these inquiries, when we consider that they were addressed to a people puffed up with a fancy of their being above others in wisdom and knowledge. All unrighteousness is sin; all reigning sin, nay, every actual sin, committed with design, and not repented of, shuts out of the kingdom of heaven. Be not deceived. Men are very much…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11After the strong warning in Leviticus 6:9–10, Paul reassures his readers of their true conversion. But you were washed: (see Acts 22:16) Cleanliness symbolizes the righteousness that comes from forgiveness (see Titus 3:5). God himself made them holy (see 1 Corinthians 1:2). They became right with God through their connection with the Lord Jesus Christ and the transformative work of the Spirit of our God. God forgave them. He views them as righteous (see…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. ye are washed--The Greek middle voice expresses, "Ye have had yourselves washed." This washing implies the admission to the benefits of Christ's salvation generally; of which the parts are; (1) Sanctification, or the setting apart from the world, and adoption into the Church: so "sanctified" is used 1Co 7:14; Joh 17:19. Compare 1Pe 1:2, where it rather seems to mean the setting apart of one as consecrated by the Spirit in the eternal purpose God. (2)…Read the comment
