Matthew 20:2-24
2When he had agreedG4856 with the laborersG2040 for a 1denariusG1220 for the dayG2250, he sentG649 them into his vineyardG290. 3And he wentG1831 outG1831 aboutG4012 the 2thirdG5154 hourG5610 and sawG3708 othersG243 standingG2476 idleG692 in the marketplaceG58; 4and to thoseG1565 he saidG3004, ‘You goG5217 into the vineyardG290 alsoG2532, and whateverG3739G1437 is rightG1342, I will giveG1325 you.’ And so they wentG565. 5AgainG3825 he wentG1831 outG1831 aboutG4012 the 3sixthG1623 and the ninthG1729 hourG5610, and didG4160 4the sameG5615 thingG5615. 6And aboutG4012 the 5eleventhG1734 hour he wentG1831 outG1831 and foundG2147 othersG243 standingG2476 around; and he saidG3004 to them, ‘WhyG5101 have you been standingG2476 hereG5602 idleG692 allG3650 dayG2250 longG3650?’ 7They saidG3004 to him, ‘BecauseG3754 noG3762 oneG3762 hiredG3409 us.’ He saidG3004 to them, ‘You goG5217 into the vineyardG290 tooG2532.’
8“NowG1161 when 6eveningG3798 cameG1096, the 7ownerG2962 of the vineyardG290 saidG3004 to his 8foremanG2012, ‘CallG2564 the laborersG2040 and payG591 them their wagesG3408, startingG757 with the lastG2078 group to the firstG4413.’ 9WhenG2532 thoseG3588 hired aboutG4012 the eleventhG1734 hourG5610 cameG2064, eachG303 oneG303 receivedG2983 a 9denariusG1220. 10And so when thoseG3588 hired firstG4413 cameG2064, they thoughtG3543 that they would receiveG2983 moreG4183; 10but eachG303 of them alsoG2532 receivedG2983 a denariusG1220. 11When they receivedG2983 it, they grumbledG1111 at the landownerG3617, 12sayingG3004, ‘TheseG3778 who were hired lastG2078 workedG4160 only oneG1520 hourG5610, and you have madeG4160 them equalG2470 to us whoG3588 have borneG941 the burdenG922 of the day’sG2250 work and the 11scorchingG2742 heatG2742.’ 13But he answeredG611 and saidG3004 to oneG1520 of them, ‘12FriendG2083, I am doingG91 you noG3756 wrongG91; did you not agreeG4856 with me for a denariusG1220? 14TakeG142 whatG3588 is yoursG4674 and goG5217; but I wantG2309 to giveG1325 to thisG3778 lastG2078 personG2078 the sameG2532 as to you. 15Is it not lawfulG1832 for me to doG4160 whatG3739 I wantG2309 with whatG3588 is my ownG1699? OrG2228 is your 13eyeG3788 14enviousG4190 becauseG3754 I amG1510 15generousG18?’ 16SoG3779 16the lastG2078 shall be firstG4413, and the firstG4413, lastG2078.”
1717As JesusG2424 wasG3195 aboutG3195 toG3195 goG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414, He tookG3880 the twelveG1427 disciples aside by themselvesG2398, and on the roadG3598 He saidG3004 to them, 18“BeholdG2400, we are goingG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414, and the SonG5207 of ManG444 18will be 19handedG3860 overG3860 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and scribesG1122, and they will condemnG2632 Him to deathG2288, 19and they 20will handG3860 Him overG3860 to the GentilesG1484 to mockG1702 and flogG3146 and crucifyG4717, and on 21the thirdG5154 dayG2250 He will be raisedG1453 upG1453.”
2022ThenG5119 the motherG3384 of 23the 24sonsG5207 of ZebedeeG2199 cameG4334 to 25Jesus with her sonsG5207, 26bowingG4352 downG4352 and makingG154 a requestG154 of Him. 21And He saidG3004 to her, “WhatG5101 do you desireG2309?” She saidG3004 to Him, “SayG3004 that in Your kingdomG932 theseG3778 twoG1417 sonsG5207 of mineG1473 27shall sitG2523, oneG1520 at Your rightG1188, and oneG1520 at Your leftG2176.” 22But JesusG2424 repliedG611G3004, “You do not knowG3609 whatG5101 you are askingG154. Are you ableG1410 28to drinkG4095 the cupG4221 that I amG3195 aboutG3195 toG3195 drinkG4095?” They saidG3004 to Him, “We are ableG1410.” 23He saidG3004 to them, “29My cupG4221 you shall drinkG4095; but to sitG2523 at My rightG1188 and at My leftG2176 is not MineG1699 to giveG1325, 30but it is for those for whomG3739 it has been 31preparedG2090 by My FatherG3962.”
24And after hearingG191 this, the other tenG1176 disciples became indignantG23 with the twoG1417 brothersG80.
