Acts 19:22-41
22And having sentG649 into 1MacedoniaG3109 twoG1417 of 2thoseG3588 who ministeredG1247 to him, 3TimothyG5095 and 4ErastusG2037, he himselfG846 stayedG1907 in 56AsiaG773 for a whileG5550.
23AboutG2596 that timeG2540 there occurredG1096 noG3756 smallG3641 disturbanceG5017 concerningG4012 7the WayG3598. 24For a manG5100 namedG3686 DemetriusG1216, a silversmithG695, who madeG4160 silverG693 shrinesG3485 of 8ArtemisG735, 9was bringingG3930 noG3756 littleG3641 10businessG2039 to the craftsmenG5079; 25theseG3739 he gatheredG4867 togetherG4867 with the workmenG2040 of similarG5108 trades, and saidG3004, “MenG435, you knowG1987 that our prosperityG2142 11dependsG1510G1537 upon thisG3778 businessG2039. 26You seeG2334 and hearG191 that not onlyG3440 in 12EphesusG2181, but in almostG4975 allG3956 of 1314AsiaG773, thisG3778 PaulG3972 has persuadedG3982 and turnedG3179 awayG3179 a considerableG2425 numberG3793 of peopleG3793, sayingG3004 that 1516gods madeG1096 with handsG5495 are noG3756 godsG2316 at all. 27Not onlyG3440 is there dangerG2793 that thisG3778 tradeG3313 of oursG1473 fallG2064 into disreputeG557, but alsoG2532 that the templeG2413 of the greatG3173 goddessG2299 17ArtemisG735 be regardedG3049 as worthlessG3762 and that she whomG3739 allG3650 of 1819AsiaG773 and 20the 21worldG3625 worshipG4576 will evenG2532 be dethronedG2507 from her magnificenceG3168.”
28When they heardG191 this and were filledG4134 with rageG2372, they began cryingG2896 out, sayingG3004, “GreatG3173 is 22ArtemisG735 of the 23EphesiansG2180!” 29The cityG4172 was filledG4092 with the confusionG4799, and they rushedG3729 24with oneG3661 accordG3661 into the theaterG2302, draggingG4884 alongG4884 25GaiusG1050 and 26AristarchusG708, Paul’sG3972 travelingG4898 27companionsG4898 from 28MacedoniaG3110. 30And when PaulG3972 wantedG1014 to goG1525 into the 29assemblyG1218, 30the disciplesG3101 would not letG1439 him. 31AlsoG2532 someG5100 of the 31AsiarchsG775 who were friendsG5384 of his sentG3992 to him and repeatedly urgedG3870 him not to 32ventureG1325G1438 into the theaterG2302. 3233SoG3767 thenG3767, someG243 were shoutingG2896 oneG3303 thing and someG243 anotherG243, for the 34assemblyG1577 was in confusionG4797 and the majorityG4183 did not knowG3609 35for whatG5101 reasonG1752 they had comeG4905 togetherG4905. 33Some of the crowdG3793 36concludedG4822 it was AlexanderG223, since the JewsG2453 had putG4261 him forwardG4261; and having 37motionedG2678 with his handG5495, AlexanderG223 was intendingG2309 to makeG626 a defenseG626 to the 38assemblyG1218. 34But when they recognizedG1921 that he was a JewG2453, a single outcryG5456 aroseG1096 from them allG3956 as they shoutedG2896 for aboutG5613 twoG1417 hoursG5610, “GreatG3173 is 39ArtemisG735 of the EphesiansG2180!” 35AfterG1063 quietingG2687 the crowdG3793, the townG1122 clerkG1122 saidG5346, “MenG435 of 40EphesusG2181, whatG5101 manG444 is there afterG1063 allG1063 whoG3739 does not knowG1097 that the cityG4172 of the EphesiansG2180 is guardianG3511 of the templeG3511 of the greatG3173 41ArtemisG735 and of the image whichG1356 fellG1356 downG1356 from 42heavenG1356? 36SoG3767, since theseG3778 are undeniableG368 factsG368, you oughtG1189 to keepG2687 calmG2687 and to doG4238 nothingG3367 rashG4312. 37For you have broughtG71 theseG3778 menG435 here who are neitherG3777 43robbersG2417 of templesG2417 norG3777 blasphemersG987 of our goddessG2299. 38SoG3767 thenG3767, ifG1487 DemetriusG1216 and the craftsmenG5079 who are with him haveG2192 a complaintG3056 againstG4314 anyG5100 manG5100, the courtsG60 are in sessionG71 and 4445proconsulsG446 are available; let them bringG1458 chargesG1458 againstG1458 oneG240 anotherG240. 39But ifG1487 you wantG1934 anythingG5100 beyondG4007 this, it shall be settledG1956 in the 46lawfulG1772 47assemblyG1577. 40For indeedG2532 we are in dangerG2793 of being accusedG1458 of a riotG4714 in connectionG4012 with today’sG4594 events, since there is noG3367 real causeG159 for it, and in thisG3739 connectionG4012 we will be unableG3756G1410 to accountG3056G591 for thisG3778 disorderlyG4963 gatheringG4963.” 41After sayingG3004 thisG3778 he dismissedG630 the 48assemblyG1577.
