20And he confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670and did not denyἠρνήσατοērnēsatoG720; and this is whathe confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670: “I amεἰμὶeimiG1510not theChristχριστός.¶christosG5547.”
21And sothey askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, “WhatτίtiG5101thenοὖν;ounG3767? Are youElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243?”And he saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “I amG1510not.” “Are youthe ProphetπροφήτηςprophētēsG4396?”And he answeredἀπεκρίθη·apekrithēG611, “NoG3756.”
22ThenοὖνounG3767they saidλέγειςlegeisG3004to him, “WhoτίςtisG5101are you? Tell us,soG2443thatG2443we may giveδῶμενdōmenG1325an answerἀπόκρισινapokrisinG612to thoseτοῖςtoisG3588who sentπέμψασινpempsasinG3992us. WhatτίtiG5101do you sayG3004aboutπερὶperiG4012yourselfG4572?”
23He saidἔφη·ephēG5346, “I amthe voiceφωνὴphōnēG5456of one callingG994outG994in the wildernessἐρήμῳ·erēmōG2048, ‘MakeG2116the wayὁδὸνhodonG3598of the Lordκυρίου·kuriouG2962straightG2116,’as IsaiahἨσαΐαςĒsaiasG2268the prophetπροφήτης.prophētēsG4396saidG3004.”
24And the messengershad beenἦσανēsanG1510sentἀπεσταλμένοιapestalmenoiG649from the PhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330.
25They askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, and saidG3004to him, “WhyτίtiG5101thenοὖνounG3767are you baptizingβαπτίζειςbaptizeisG907,ifεἰeiG1487you are not theChristχριστὸςchristosG5547,norοὐδὲoudeG3761ElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243,norοὐδὲoudeG3761the Prophetπροφήτης;prophētēsG4396?”
26JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491answeredἀπεκρίθηapekrithēG611them, sayingλέγων·legōnG3004, “I baptizeβαπτίζωbaptizōG907in waterὕδατι·hudatiG5204, butamongμέσοςmesosG3319you standsG4739One whomὃνhonG3739you do not knowG3609.
27It isHe who comesἐρχόμενος,erchomenosG2064afterὀπίσωopisōG3694me, of whom I amεἰμὶeimiG1510not worthyἄξιοςaxiosG514evento untieλύσωlusōG3089thestrapἱμάνταhimantaG2438of His sandalὑποδήματος.hupodēmatosG5266.”
28TheseG3778thingsταῦταtautaG3778tookG1096placeἐγένετοegenetoG1096in BethanyΒηθανίᾳBēthaniaG963beyondπέρανperanG4008the JordanἸορδάνουIordanouG2446,whereὅπουhopouG3699JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491was baptizingβαπτίζων.¶baptizōnG907people.
29The nextἐπαύριονepaurionG1887dayG1887he sawβλέπειblepeiG991JesusἸησοῦνIēsounG2424comingἐρχόμενονerchomenonG2064to him, and saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “BeholdἴδεideG2396,the LambἀμνὸςamnosG286of Godθεοῦ,theouG2316whotakesG142awayαἴρωνairōnG142the sinἁμαρτίανhamartianG266of the worldκόσμου.kosmouG2889!
30ThisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is He inG5228behalfG5228of whomοὗhouG3739I saidG3004, ‘AfterὀπίσωopisōG3694me is comingἔρχεταιerchetaiG2064a ManἀνὴρanērG435whoὃςhosG3739has provedG1096toG1096beG1096my superiorἔμπροσθένemprosthenG1715,becauseὅτιhotiG3754He existedG1510beforeπρῶτόςprōtosG4413me.’
31And I did not recognizeG3609Him, but soG2443thatG2443He would be revealedφανερωθῇphanerōthēaG5319to IsraelἸσραήλ,IsraēlG2474,I cameἦλθονēlthonG2064baptizingβαπτίζων.baptizōnG907in waterὕδατιhudatiG5204.”
32And JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491testifiedἐμαρτύρησενemarturēsenG3140,sayingλέγωνlegōnG3004, “I have seenτεθέαμαιtetheamaiG2300the SpiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151descendingκαταβαῖνονkatabainonG2597as a doveπεριστερὰνperisteranG4058out of heavenοὐρανοῦ,ouranouG3772,and He remainedἔμεινενemeinenG3306upon Him.
33And I did not recognizeG3609Him, but He who sentπέμψαςpempsasG3992me to baptizeβαπτίζεινbaptizeinG907in waterὕδατι,hudatiG5204saidG3004to me, ‘He upon whomὃνhonG3739you seeG3708the SpiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151descendingκαταβαῖνονkatabainonG2597and remainingμένονmenonG3306upon Him,thisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is the One who baptizesβαπτίζωνbaptizōnG907in the Holyἁγίῳ.hagiōG40SpiritπνεύματιpneumatiG4151.’
34And I myselfκἀγὼkagōkaiG1473have seenἑώρακαhe'ōrakaG3708,and have testifiedμεμαρτύρηκαmemarturēkaG3140that thisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is theSonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of Godθεοῦ.¶theouG2316.”

36and he lookedἐμβλέψαςemblepsasG1689atG1689JesusἸησοῦIēsouG2424as He walkedπεριπατοῦντιperipatountiG4043,and saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “BeholdἴδεideG2396,the LambἀμνὸςamnosG286of Godθεοῦ.theouG2316!”
