23AboutκατὰkataG2596that timeκαιρὸνkaironG2540a majorοὐκ ὀλίγοςouk oligosG3756 G3641disturbanceτάραχοςtarachosG5017occurredἘγένετοEgenetoG1096inG4012regardG4012toG4012the Wayὁδοῦ.¶hodouG3598.

24For a manτιςtisG5100namedὀνόματι,onomatiG3686DemetriusΔημήτριοςDēmētriosG1216,a silversmithἀργυροκόποςargurokoposG695who madeποιῶνpoiōnG4160silverἀργυροῦςargurousG693shrinesναοὺςnaousG3485ofArtemisἈρτέμιδος,ArtemidosG735,was bringingπαρείχετοpareichetoG3930considerableοὐκ ὀλίγηνouk oligēnG3756 G3641businessἐργασίαν,ergasianG2039to the craftsmenτεχνίταιςtechnitaisG5079;

25he gatheredG4867theseG3739menG3739togetherσυναθροίσαςsunathroisasG4867with the workmenἐργάταςergatasG2040of similarτοιαῦταtoiautaG5108trades,and saidG3004, “Menἄνδρες,andresG435,you knowἐπίστασθεepistastheG1987that our prosperityεὐπορίαeuporiaG2142dependsἐκ ἐστιν,ek estinG1510 G1537upon thisταύτηςtautēsG3778businessἐργασίαςergasiasG2039.

27Not onlyG3440isG2793there dangerG2793that thisτοῦτοtoutoG3778tradeμέροςmerosG3313of oursG1473will fallἐλθεῖνeltheinG2064into disreputeἀπελεγμὸνapelegmonG557,but alsoG2532that the templeG2413of the greatμεγάληςmegalēsG3173goddessθεᾶςtheasG2299ArtemisἈρτέμιδοςArtemidosG735will be regardedλογισθῆναι,logisthēnaiG3049as worthlessοὐθὲνouthenG3762,and that she whomἣνhēnG3739allὅληholēG3650ofAsiaἈσίαAsiaG773and theworldοἰκουμένηoikoumenēG3625worshipσέβεται.¶sebetaiG4576will evenG2532be dethronedκαθαιρεῖσθαιkathaireisthaiG2507from her magnificenceμεγαλειότητοςmegaleiotētosG3168.”

29The cityπόλιςpolisG4172was filledG4092with the confusionσυγχύσεως·sugchuseōsG4799,and they rushedὥρμησάνhōrmēsanG3729togetherὁμοθυμαδὸνhomothumadonG3661into the theaterθέατρονtheatronG2302,draggingG4884alongG4884GaiusΓάϊονGaionG1050andAristarchusἈρίσταρχονAristarchonG708,Paul’sΠαύλου.¶PaulouG3972MacedonianΜακεδόνας,MakedonasG3110travelingG4898companionsG4898.

32SoG3767thenG3767,someG243were shoutingἔκραζον·ekrazonG2896oneμὲνmenG3303thing and someG243anotherG243, for theassemblyἐκκλησίαekklēsiaG1577was inG4797confusionG4797and the majorityπλείουςpleiousG4183did not knowG3609for whatτίνοςtinosG5101reasonἕνεκαhenekaG1752they had comeG4905togetherG4905.

33Some of the crowdὄχλουochlouG3793concludedσυνεβίβασανsunebibasanG4822it wasAlexanderἈλέξανδρονAlexandronG223,since the JewsἸουδαίων·IoudaiōnG2453had putG4261him forwardG4261; and havingmotionedκατασείσαςkataseisasG2678with his handχεῖραcheiraG5495,AlexanderἈλέξανδροςAlexandrosG223was intendingἤθελενēthelenG2309to makeG626aG626defenseἀπολογεῖσθαιapologeisthaiG626to the assemblyδήμῳ.dēmōG1218.

37For you have broughtἠγάγετεēgageteG71theseτούτουςtoutousG3778menἄνδραςandrasG435here who areneitherοὔτεouteG3777templeG2417robbersG2417norοὔτεouteG3777blasphemersβλασφημοῦνταςblasphēmountasG987of our goddessG2299.

38SoG3767thenG3767,ifεἰeiG1487DemetriusΔημήτριοςDēmētriosG1216and the craftsmenτεχνῖταιtechnitaiG5079who are with him haveἔχουσιechousiG2192a complaintλόγον,logonG3056againstπρόςprosG4314anyoneτιναtinaG5100,the courtsἀγοραῖοιagoraioiG60are inG71sessionG71andproconsulsἀνθύπατοίanthupatoiG446are available;have them bringG1458chargesG1458againstG1458oneἀλλήλοις.allēloisG240anotherG240.

39But ifεἰeiG1487you wantἐπιζητεῖτε,epizēteiteG1934anythingτιtiG5100beyondG4007this, it shall be settledἐπιλυθήσεται.epiluthēsetaiG1956in thelawfulἐννόμῳennomōG1772assemblyἐκκλησίᾳekklēsiaG1577.

40For indeedG2532,we areG2793inG2793dangerκινδυνεύομενkinduneuomenG2793of being accusedἐγκαλεῖσθαιegkaleisthaiG1458of a riotστάσεωςstaseōsG4714inG4012connectionG4012withG4012today’sσήμερονsēmeronG4594events,since there is noμηδενὸςmēdenosG3367realreasonαἰτίουaitiouG159for it,and inG4012thisοὗhouG3739connectionG4012we will be unableοὐ δυνησόμεθαou dunēsomethaG3756 G1410to accountἀποδοῦναι λόγονapodounai logonG3056 G591for thisG3778disorderlyG4963gatheringG4963.”
