Overcoming the World

2By thisτούτῳtoutōG3778we knowγινώσκομενginōskomenG1097thatwe loveἀγαπῶμενagapōmenG25the childrenτέκναteknaG5043of Godθεοῦ,theouG2316,whenὅτανhotanG3752we loveἀγαπῶμενagapōmenG25GodθεὸνtheonG2316andfollowποιῶμεν.poiōmenG4160His commandmentsἐντολὰςentolasG1785.

3ForthisαὕτηhautēG3778is the loveἀγάπηagapēG26of Godθεοῦ,theouG2316, that wekeepτηρῶμεν·tērōmenG5083His commandmentsἐντολὰςentolasG1785; andHis commandmentsἐντολαὶentolaiG1785are not burdensomeβαρεῖαιbareiaiG926.

4ForwhoeverπᾶνpanG3956has beenbornγεγεννημένονgegennēmenonG1080of GodθεοῦtheouG2316overcomesνικᾷnikaG3528the worldκόσμον·kosmonG2889;and thisαὕτηhautēG3778is the victoryνίκηnikēG3529that has overcomeνικήσασαnikēsasaG3528the worldκόσμον,kosmonG2889:our faithπίστιςpistisG4102.

5WhoτίςtisG5101is the one who overcomesνικῶνnikōnG3528the worldκόσμονkosmonG2889, but the one whobelievesπιστεύωνpisteuōnG4100that JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424is the SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of Godθεοῦ;theouG2316?

6ThisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is the One who cameἐλθὼνelthōnG2064by waterὕδατοςhudatosG5204and bloodαἵματος,aimatosG129,JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424ChristΧριστός·ChristosG5547; notwith the waterὕδατιhudatiG5204onlyG3440, butwith the waterὕδατιhudatiG5204andwith the bloodαἵματι·aimatiG129. It isthe SpiritπνεῦμάpneumaG4151who testifiesμαρτυροῦν,marturounG3140,becauseὅτιhotiG3754the SpiritπνεῦμάpneumaG4151is the truthἀλήθεια·alētheiaG225.

7For thereεἰσινeisinG1510arethreeτρεῖςtreisG5140that testifyμαρτυροῦντες,marturountesG3140:

8the SpiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151and the waterὕδωρhudōrG5204and the bloodαἷμα,haimaG129;and the threeτρεῖςtreisG5140arein agreementἕνhenG1520.

9IfεἰeiG1487we receiveλαμβάνομεν,lambanomenG2983the testimonyμαρτυρίανmarturianG3141of peopleἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnG444,the testimonyμαρτυρίαmarturiaG3141of GodθεοῦtheouG2316is greaterμείζωνmeizōnG3173;for the testimonyμαρτυρίαmarturiaG3141of GodθεοῦtheouG2316is thisαὕτηhautēG3778, thatHe has testifiedμεμαρτύρηκενmemarturēkenG3140concerningπερὶperiG4012His SonυἱοῦhuiouG5207.

10The one who believesπιστεύωνpisteuōnG4100in the SonυἱὸνhuionG5207of GodθεοῦtheouG2316hasἔχειecheiG2192the testimonyμαρτυρίανmarturianG3141in himselfG846;the one who does not believeπιστεύωνpisteuōnG4100GodθεῷtheōG2316hasmadeπεποίηκενpepoiēkenG4160Him a liarψεύστηνpseustēnG5583,becauseὅτιhotiG3754he has not believedπεπίστευκενpepisteukenG4100in the testimonyμαρτυρίανmarturianG3141that GodθεὸςtheosG2316has givenμεμαρτύρηκενmemarturēkenG3140concerningπερὶperiG4012His SonυἱοῦhuiouG5207.

11And the testimonyμαρτυρίαmarturiaG3141is thisαὕτηhautēG3778,that Godθεός·theosG2316has givenἔδωκενedōkenG1325useternalαἰώνιονaiōnionG166lifeζωὴνzōēnG2222, andthisαὕτηhautēG3778lifeζωὴzōēG2222is in His SonυἱῷhuiōG5207.

12The one who hasἔχωνechōnG2192the SonυἱὸνhuionG5207hasἔχειecheiG2192the lifeζωήν·zōēnG2222;the one who does not haveἔχωνechōnG2192the SonυἱὸνhuionG5207of GodθεοῦtheouG2316does not haveἔχει.¶echeiG2192the lifeζωὴνzōēnG2222.

14ThisαὕτηhautēG3778isthe confidenceπαρρησίαparrēsiaG3954whichἣνhēnG3739we haveἔχομενechomenG2192beforeπρὸςprosG4314Him, that,ifἐάνeanG1437we askαἰτώμεθαaitōmethaG154anythingτιtiG5100accordingκατὰkataG2596to His willθέλημαthelēmaG2307,He hearsἀκούειakoueiG191us.

15And ifἐὰνeanG1437we knowG3609that He hearsἀκούειakoueiG191us inwhateverὃ ἐὰνho eanG3739 G1437we askαἰτώμεθα,aitōmethaG154,we knowG3609that we haveἔχομενechomenG2192the requestsαἰτήματαaitēmataG155whichἃhaG3739we have askedᾐτήκαμενētēkamenG154from Him.

16IfἘάνEanG1437anyoneτιςtisG5100seesG3708his brotherἀδελφὸνadelphonG80or sistercommittingG264a sinἁμαρτίανhamartianG266not leadingto deathθάνατον,thanatonG2288,he shall askαἰτήσειaitēseiG154and Godwill, for him, giveδώσειdōseiG1325lifeζωήν,zōēnG2222to thoseG3588who commitG264sinG264not leadingto deathθάνατον.¶thanatonG2288.There is sinἁμαρτίαhamartiaG266leadingto deathθάνατον·thanatonG2288;I am not sayingλέγωlegōG3004that he should askἐρωτήσῃ.erōtēsēG2065about thatἐκείνηςekeinēsG1565.

17AllπᾶσαpasaG3956unrighteousnessἀδικίαadikiaG93is sinἁμαρτίαhamartiaG266, andthere is sinἁμαρτίαhamartiaG266not leadingto deathθάνατον.thanatonG2288.

18We knowG3609thatnoG3956 G3756oneG3956who has been bornγεγεννημένοςgegennēmenosG1080of Godθεοῦ,theouG2316sinsἁμαρτάνει·hamartaneiG264;but He who was bornγεννηθεὶςgennētheisG1080of GodθεοῦtheouG2316keepsτηρεῖtēreiG5083him, andthe evilπονηρὸςponērosG4190oneG4190does nottouchἅπτεταιhaptetaiG681him.

19We knowG3609thatwe are of GodθεοῦtheouG2316, and thatthe wholeὅλοςholosG3650worldκόσμοςkosmosG2889liesκεῖται.keitaiG2749in the power ofthe evilπονηρῷponērōG4190oneG4190.

20Andwe knowG3609thatthe SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of GodθεοῦtheouG2316hasG2240comeἥκειhēkeiG2240, and hasgivenδέδωκενdedōkenG1325us understandingδιάνοιανdianoianG1271soἵναinaG2443thatG2443we may knowγινώσκωμενginōskōmenG1097Him whoG3588is trueἀληθινόν,alēthinonG228; and weare in Him whoG3588is trueἀληθινῷ,alēthinōG228,in His SonυἱῷhuiōG5207JesusἸησοῦIēsouG2424ChristΧριστῷ.ChristōG5547.ThisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is the trueἀληθινὸςalēthinosG228GodθεὸςtheosG2316andeternalαἰώνιος.aiōniosG166lifeζωὴzōēG2222.
