Deuteronomy 20

1When thou goest forthH3318 to battleH4421 against thine enemiesH341, and seest horsesH5483, and chariotsH7393, and a peopleH5971 moreH4480 than thou, thou shalt not be afraidH3372 of them; for Jehovah thy GodH430 is with thee, who broughtH3318 thee up out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 2And it shall beH1961, when ye drawH7126 nigh unto the battleH4421, that the priestH3548 shall approach and speakH1696 unto the peopleH5971, 3and shall sayH559 unto them, HearH8085, O IsraelH3478, ye draw nigh this dayH3117 unto battleH4421 against your enemiesH341: let not your heartH3824 faint; fearH3372 not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them; 4for Jehovah your GodH430 is he that goeth with you, to fightH3898 for you against your enemiesH341, to saveH3467 you. 5And the officersH7860 shall speakH1696 unto the peopleH5971, sayingH559, What manH376 is there that hath builtH1129 a newH2319 houseH1004, and hath not dedicated it? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 to his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 dedicate it. 6And what manH376 is there that hath plantedH5193 a vineyardH3754, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 use the fruit thereof. 7And what manH376 is there that hath betrothedH781 a wifeH802, and hath not takenH3947 her? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lestH6435 he dieH4191 in the battleH4421, and another manH376 takeH3947 her. 8And the officersH7860 shall speakH1696 further unto the peopleH5971, and they shall sayH559, What manH376 is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him goH7725 and returnH7725 unto his houseH1004, lest his brethren’s heartH3824 meltH4549 as his heartH3824. 9And it shall beH1961, when the officers have made an endH3615 of speakingH1696 unto the peopleH5971, that they shall appointH6485 captains of hostsH6635 at the headH7218 of the peopleH5971.

10When thou drawest nigh unto a cityH5892 to fightH3898 against it, then proclaimH7121 peaceH7965 unto it. 11And it shall beH1961, if it make thee answerH6030 of peaceH7965, and openH6605 unto thee, then it shall beH1961, that all the peopleH5971 that areH1961 foundH4672 therein shall becomeH1961 tributary unto thee, and shall serveH5647 thee. 12And if it will makeH6213 no peace with thee, but will makeH6213 warH4421 against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: 13and when Jehovah thy GodH430 delivereth it into thy handH3027, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the swordH2719: 14but the womenH802, and the littleH2945 onesH2945, and the cattleH929, and all that is in the cityH5892, even all the spoilH7998 thereof, shalt thou takeH962 for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eatH398 the spoilH7998 of thine enemiesH341, which Jehovah thy GodH430 hath givenH5414 thee. 15ThusH3651 shalt thou do unto all the citiesH5892 which are veryH3966 farH7350 off from thee, which are not of the citiesH5892 of these nationsH1471. 16But of the citiesH5892 of these peoplesH5971, that Jehovah thy GodH430 giveth thee for an inheritanceH5159, thou shalt save aliveH2421 nothing that breatheth; 17but thou shalt utterly destroyH2763 them: the HittiteH2850, and the AmoriteH567, the CanaaniteH3669, and the PerizziteH6522, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983; as Jehovah thy GodH430 hath commandedH6680 thee; 18that they teachH3925 you not to do after all their abominationsH8441, which they have done unto their godsH430; soH4616 would ye sinH2398 against Jehovah your GodH430.

19When thou shalt besiege a cityH5892 a long time, in makingH3772 war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroyH7843 the treesH6086 thereof by wieldingH8610 an axeH1631 against them; for thou mayest eatH398 of them, and thou shalt not cutH3772 them downH3772; for is the treeH6086 of the fieldH7704 manH120, that it should be besieged of thee? 20OnlyH7535 the treesH6086 of which thou knowest that they are not treesH6086 for foodH3978, thou shalt destroyH7843 and cutH3772 them downH3381; and thou shalt buildH1129 bulwarks against the cityH5892 that maketh warH4421 with thee, until it fall.
