Jeremiah 5

1Run ye to and fro through the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389, and seeH7200 now, and knowH3045, and seekH1245 in the broad places thereof, if ye can findH4672 a manH376, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh truth; and I will pardon her. 2And though they sayH559, As Jehovah liveth; surely they swearH7650 falsely. 3O Jehovah, do not thine eyesH5869 look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refusedH3985 to receiveH3947 correctionH4148: they have madeH2388 their facesH6440 harder than a rockH5553; they have refusedH3985 to returnH7725.

4Then I saidH559, Surely these are poorH1800; they are foolish; for they knowH3045 not the wayH1870 of Jehovah, nor the law of their GodH430: 5I will get me unto the greatH1419 men, and will speakH1696 unto them; for they knowH3045 the wayH1870 of Jehovah, and the law of their GodH430. But these with one accord have brokenH7665 the yokeH5923, and burst the bonds. 6Wherefore a lionH738 out of the forestH3293 shall slay them, a wolfH2061 of the evenings shall destroyH7703 them, a leopardH5246 shall watchH8245 against their citiesH5892; every one that goeth out thence shall be tornH2963 in pieces; because their transgressionsH6588 are manyH7231, and their backslidings are increased.

7How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and swornH7650 by them that are no godsH430. When I had fed them to the full, they committedH5003 adulteryH5003, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ housesH1004; 8they wereH1961 as fed horsesH5483 roaming at large; every oneH376 neighed after his neighbor’sH7453 wifeH802. 9Shall I not visitH6485 for these thingsH428? saith Jehovah; and shall not my soulH5315 be avengedH5358 on such a nationH1471 as this?

10GoH5927 ye up upon her walls, and destroyH7843; but makeH6213 not a full end: take awayH5493 her branches; for they are not Jehovah’s. 11For the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 and the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 have dealtH898 very treacherouslyH898 against me, saith Jehovah. 12They have deniedH3584 Jehovah, and saidH559, It is not he; neither shall evilH7451 comeH935 upon us; neither shall we seeH7200 swordH2719 nor famineH7458: 13and the prophetsH5030 shall becomeH1961 windH7307, and the word is not in them: thusH3541 shall it beH1961 done unto them.

14Wherefore thusH3541 saith Jehovah, the GodH430 of hostsH6635, Because ye speakH1696 this wordH1697, behold, I will makeH5414 my wordsH1697 in thy mouthH6310 fireH784, and this peopleH5971 woodH6086, and it shall devourH398 them. 15Lo, I will bringH935 a nationH1471 upon you from far, O houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, saith Jehovah: it is a mighty nationH1471, it is an ancient nationH1471, a nationH1471 whose languageH3956 thou knowest not, neither understandest what they sayH1696. 16Their quiverH827 is an openH6605 sepulchre, they are all mightyH1368 menH1368. 17And they shall eatH398 up thy harvestH7105, and thy breadH3899, which thy sonsH1121 and thy daughtersH1323 should eatH398; they shall eatH398 up thy flocksH6629 and thy herdsH1241; they shall eatH398 up thy vinesH1612 and thy fig-trees; they shall beat down thy fortified citiesH5892, wherein thou trustest, with the swordH2719. 18But even in those daysH3117, saith Jehovah, I will not makeH6213 a full end with you.

19And it shall come to pass, when ye shall sayH559, Wherefore hath Jehovah our GodH430 done all these thingsH428 unto us? then shalt thou sayH559 unto them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and servedH5647 foreign godsH430 in your landH776, soH3651 shall ye serveH5647 strangersH2114 in a landH776 that is not yours.

20DeclareH5046 ye this in the houseH1004 of JacobH3290, and publish it in JudahH3063, sayingH559, 21HearH8085 now this, O foolish peopleH5971, and without understanding; that have eyesH5869, and seeH7200 not; that have earsH241, and hearH8085 not: 22FearH3372 ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not trembleH2342 at my presenceH6440, who have placedH7760 the sandH2344 for the bound of the seaH3220, by a perpetual decreeH2706, that it cannot passH5674 it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevailH3201; though they roarH1993, yet can they not passH5674 over it. 23But this peopleH5971 hath a revolting and a rebelliousH4784 heartH3820; they areH1961 revolted and gone. 24Neither sayH559 they in their heartH3824, Let us now fearH3372 Jehovah our GodH430, that giveth rainH1653, both the former and the latter, in its season; that preserveth unto us the appointed weeksH7620 of the harvestH7105. 25Your iniquitiesH5771 have turnedH5186 away these thingsH428, and your sinsH2403 have withholden goodH2896 from you. 26For among my peopleH5971 are foundH4672 wickedH7563 menH376: they watchH7789, as fowlersH3353 lie in wait; they setH5324 a trap, they catchH3920 menH376. 27As a cage is fullH4392 of birdsH5775, soH3651 are their housesH1004 fullH4392 of deceitH4820: thereforeH3651 they are becomeH1431 greatH1431, and waxed richH6238. 28They are waxed fatH8080, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickednessH7451; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherlessH3490, that they may prosperH6743; and the rightH4941 of the needyH34 do they not judgeH8199. 29Shall I not visitH6485 for these thingsH428? saith Jehovah; shall not my soulH5315 be avengedH5358 on such a nationH1471 as this?

30A wonderful and horrible thing is come to pass in the landH776: 31the prophetsH5030 prophesyH5012 falsely, and the priestsH3548 bear rule by their means; and my peopleH5971 loveH157 to have it soH3651: and what will ye do in the endH319 thereof?
