Jeremiah 2:8-26
8The priestsH3548 saidH559 not, WhereH346 is Jehovah? and they that handle the lawH8451 knewH3045 me not: the rulers also transgressedH6586 against me, and the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012 by BaalH1168, and walkedH1980 after things that do not profitH3276.
9Wherefore I will yetH5750 contendH7378 with you, saith Jehovah, and with your children’s children will I contendH7378. 10For passH5674 over to the isles of KittimH3794, and seeH7200; and sendH7971 unto KedarH6938, and considerH7200 diligently; and seeH7200 if there hath beenH1961 such a thing. 11Hath a nationH1471 changed its godsH430, which yet are no godsH430? but my peopleH5971 have changed their gloryH3519 for that which doth not profitH3276. 12Be astonished, O ye heavensH8064, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye veryH3966 desolateH8074, saith Jehovah. 13For my peopleH5971 have committed twoH8147 evils: they have forsaken me, the fountainH4726 of living watersH4325, and hewed them out cisternsH877, brokenH7665 cisternsH877, that can holdH3557 no waterH4325.
14Is IsraelH3478 a servantH5650? is he a home-born slaveH5650? whyH4069 is he becomeH1961 a preyH957? 15The youngH3715 lionsH3715 have roaredH7580 upon him, and yelled; and they have madeH5414 his landH776 wasteH8047: his citiesH5892 are burnedH3341 up, without inhabitantH3427. 16The children alsoH1571 of MemphisH5297 and TahpanhesH8471 have broken the crown of thy head. 17Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy GodH430, when he led thee by the wayH1870? 18And nowH6258 what hast thou to do in the wayH1870 to EgyptH4714, to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of the ShihorH7883? or what hast thou to do in the wayH1870 to AssyriaH804, to drinkH8354 the watersH4325 of the RiverH5104? 19Thine own wickednessH7451 shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reproveH3198 thee: knowH3045 therefore and seeH7200 that it is an evilH7451 thing and a bitterH4751, that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy GodH430, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hostsH6635.
20For of old time I have brokenH7665 thy yokeH5923, and burst thy bonds; and thou saidst, I will not serveH5647; for upon every highH1364 hillH1389 and under every green treeH6086 thou didst bow thyself, playingH2181 the harlot. 21Yet I had plantedH5193 thee a noble vineH1612, wholly a right seedH2233: howH349 then art thou turnedH2015 into the degenerate branches of a foreignH5237 vineH1612 unto me? 22For though thou washH3526 thee with lye, and take thee muchH7235 soapH1287, yet thine iniquityH5771 is marked before me, saith the LordH136 Jehovah. 23HowH4100 canst thou sayH559, I am not defiledH2930, I have not goneH1980 after the Baalim? seeH7200 thy wayH1870 in the valleyH1516, knowH3045 what thou hast done: thou art a swiftH7031 dromedary traversing her waysH1870; 24a wildH6501 ass used to the wildernessH4057, that snuffeth up the windH7307 in her desireH5315; in her occasion who can turnH7725 her awayH7725? all they that seekH1245 her will not wearyH3286 themselves; in her monthH2320 they shall findH4672 her. 25WithholdH4513 thy footH7272 from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst, It is in vain; no, for I have lovedH157 strangersH2114, and after them will I go.
26As the thiefH1590 is ashamedH954 when he is foundH4672, soH3651 is the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 ashamedH954; they, their kingsH4428, their princesH8269, and their priestsH3548, and their prophetsH5030;
