Romans 7

New American Standard Bible 1995

Believers United to Christ

1OrG2228 do you not knowG50, 1brethrenG80 (for I am speakingG2980 to those who knowG1097 the lawG3551), that the lawG3551 hasG2961 jurisdictionG2961 overG2961 a personG444 as longG5550 as he livesG2198? 2For 2the marriedG5220 womanG1135 is boundG1210 by lawG3551 to her 3husbandG435 while he is livingG2198; but ifG1437 her husbandG435 diesG599, she is releasedG2673 from the lawG3551 4concerning the husbandG435. 3SoG686 thenG686, ifG1437 while her husbandG435 is livingG2198 she is joinedG1096 to anotherG2087 manG435, she shall be calledG5537 an adulteressG3428; but ifG1437 her husbandG435 diesG599, she is freeG1658 from the lawG3551, so that she is not an adulteressG3428 though she is joinedG1096 to anotherG2087 manG435.

4ThereforeG5620, my brethrenG80, you alsoG2532 were 5madeG2289 to dieG2289 6to the LawG3551 7throughG1223 the bodyG4983 of ChristG5547, soG1519 that you might be joinedG1096 to anotherG2087, to Him who was raisedG1453 from the deadG3498, in orderG2443 that we might bearG2592 fruitG2592 for GodG2316. 5For whileG3753 we were 8in the fleshG4561, the sinfulG266 passionsG3804, which were 9aroused by the LawG3551, were at workG1754 10in 11the membersG3196 of our body to bearG2592 fruitG2592 for deathG2288. 6But nowG3570 we have been 12releasedG2673 from the LawG3551, having 13diedG599 to that by whichG3739 we were boundG2722, soG5620 that we serveG1398 in 14newnessG2538 of 15the 16SpiritG4151 and not in oldnessG3821 of the letterG1121.

717WhatG5101 shall we sayG3004 thenG3767? Is the LawG3551 sinG266? 18May it neverG3361 be! On the contraryG235, 19I would not have come to knowG1097 sinG266 exceptG1508 20throughG1223 the LawG3551; for I would not have knownG3609 aboutG3609 21covetingG1939 ifG1487 the LawG3551 had not saidG3004, “22You shall not 23covetG1937.” 8But sinG266, 24takingG2983 opportunityG874 25throughG1223 the commandmentG1785, producedG2716 in me 26covetingG1939 of everyG3956 kindG3956; for 27apartG5565 28from the LawG3551 sinG266 is deadG3498. 9I was onceG4218 aliveG2198 apartG5565 29from the LawG3551; but when the commandmentG1785 cameG2064, sinG266 becameG326 aliveG326 and I diedG599; 10and thisG3778 commandmentG1785, which was 3031to resultG1519 in lifeG2222, provedG2147 32to resultG1519 in deathG2288 for me; 11for sinG266, 33takingG2983 an opportunityG874 34throughG1223 the commandmentG1785, 35deceivedG1818 me and throughG1223 it killedG615 me. 1236SoG5620 thenG5620, the LawG3551 is holyG40, and the commandmentG1785 is holyG40 and righteousG1342 and goodG18.

13ThereforeG3767 did that whichG18 is goodG18 becomeG1096 a cause of deathG2288 for me? 37May it neverG3361 be! RatherG235 it was sinG266, in orderG2443 that it might be shownG5316 to be sinG266 by effectingG2716 my deathG2288 throughG1223 that whichG18 is goodG18, soG2443 that throughG1223 the commandmentG1785 sinG266 would becomeG1096 utterlyG5236 sinfulG266.

The Conflict of Two Natures

14For we knowG3609 that the LawG3551 is 38spiritualG4152, but I amG1510 39of fleshG4560, 40soldG4097 4142into bondage to sinG266. 15For whatG3739 I am doingG2716, 43I do not understandG1097; for I am not practicingG4238 44whatG3739 I would likeG2309 to do, but I am doingG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3739 I hateG3404. 16But ifG1487 I doG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3778 I do not wantG2309 to do, I agreeG4852 with 45the LawG3551, confessing that the LawG3551 is goodG2570. 17SoG1161 nowG3570, 46noG3765 longerG3765 am I the one doingG2716 it, but sinG266 which dwellsG1774 in me. 18For I knowG3609 that nothingG3756 goodG18 dwellsG3611 in me, that is, in my 47fleshG4561; for the willingG2309 is presentG3873 in me, but the doingG2716 of the goodG2570 is not. 19For 48the goodG18 that I wantG2309, I do not doG4160, but I practiceG4238 the veryG3778 evilG2556 that I do not wantG2309. 20But ifG1487 I am doingG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3778 I do not wantG2309, 49I am noG3765 longerG3765 the one doingG2716 it, but sinG266 which dwellsG3611 in me.

21I findG2147 thenG686 50the 51principleG3551 that evilG2556 is presentG3873 in me, the one who wantsG2309 to doG4160 goodG2570. 22For I joyfullyG4913 concurG4913 with the lawG3551 of GodG2316 52in 53the innerG2080 manG444, 23but I seeG991 54a differentG2087 lawG3551 in 55the membersG3196 of my body, wagingG497 warG497 againstG497 the 56lawG3551 of my mindG3563 and makingG163 me a prisonerG163 57of 58the lawG3551 of sinG266 which is in my membersG3196. 24WretchedG5005 manG444 that I am! WhoG5101 will setG4506 me freeG4506 from 5960the bodyG4983 of thisG3778 61deathG2288? 2562ThanksG5485 be to GodG2316 throughG1223 JesusG2424 ChristG5547 our LordG2962! SoG686 thenG686, on the oneG3303 handG3303 I myselfG846 with my mindG3563 am servingG1398 the lawG3551 of GodG2316, but on the otherG1161, with my fleshG4561 63the lawG3551 of sinG266.
