Romans 7
New American Standard Bible 2020
Believers United to Christ
1OrG2228 do you not knowG50, 1brothersG80 and sisters (for I am speakingG2980 to those who knowG1097 the 2LawG3551), that the 3LawG3551 hasG2961 jurisdictionG2961 overG2961 a personG444 as longG5550 as he livesG2198? 2For 4the marriedG5220 womanG1135 is boundG1210 by lawG3551 to her 5husbandG435 as long as he isG2198 aliveG2198; but ifG1437 her husbandG435 diesG599, she is releasedG2673 from the lawG3551 6concerning the husbandG435. 3SoG686 thenG3767, ifG1437 while her husbandG435 isG2198 aliveG2198 she 7givesG1096 herselfG1096 to anotherG2087 manG435, she will be calledG5537 an adulteressG3428; but ifG1437 her husbandG435 diesG599, she is freeG1658 from the lawG3551, so that she is not an adulteressG3428 if she 8givesG1096 herselfG1096 to anotherG2087 manG435.
4ThereforeG5620, my brothersG80 and sisters, you alsoG2532 were 9putG2289 toG2289 deathG2289 10in regard to the LawG3551 11throughG1223 the bodyG4983 of ChristG5547, soG1519 thatG1519 you might belongG1096 to anotherG2087, to Him who was raisedG1453 from the deadG3498, inG2443 orderG2443 thatG2443 we might bearG2592 fruitG2592 for GodG2316. 5For whileG3753 we were 12in the fleshG4561, the sinfulG266 passionsG3804, which were 13brought to light by the LawG3551, were at workG1754 14in 15the partsG3196 of our body to bearG2592 fruitG2592 for deathG2288. 6But nowG3570 we have been 16releasedG2673 from the LawG3551, having 17diedG599 to that by whichG3739 we were boundG2722, soG5620 thatG5620 we serveG1398 in 18newnessG2538 of 19the 20SpiritG4151 and not in oldnessG3821 of the letterG1121.
721WhatG5101 shall we sayG3004 thenG3767? Is the LawG3551 sinG266? 2223FarG3361 fromG3361 it! On the contraryG235, 24I would not have come to knowG1097 sinG266 exceptG1508 25throughG1223 the LawG3551; for I would not have knownG3609 aboutG3609 26covetingG1939 ifG1487 the LawG3551 had not saidG3004, “27You shall not 28covetG1937.” 8But sinG266, 29takingG2983 an opportunityG874 30throughG1223 the commandmentG1785, producedG2716 in me 31covetingG1939 of everyG3956 kindG3956; for 32apartG5565 33from the LawG3551 sinG266 is deadG3498. 9I wasG2198 onceG4218 aliveG2198 apartG5565 34from the LawG3551; but when the commandmentG1785 cameG2064, sinG266 cameG326 toG326 lifeG326, and I diedG599; 10and thisG3778 commandmentG1785, which was 3536to resultG1519 in lifeG2222, provedG2147 37to resultG1519 in deathG2288 for me; 11for sinG266, 38takingG2983 an opportunityG874 39throughG1223 the commandmentG1785, 40deceivedG1818 me, and throughG1223 it, killedG615 me. 1241SoG5620 thenG5620, the LawG3551 is holyG40, and the commandmentG1785 is holyG40 and righteousG1342 and goodG18.
13ThereforeG3767 did that which is goodG18 becomeG1096 a cause of deathG2288 for me? 4243FarG3361 fromG3361 it! RatherG235 it was sinG266, inG2443 orderG2443 thatG2443 it might be shownG5316 to be sinG266 by bringingG2716 aboutG2716 my deathG2288 throughG1223 that which is goodG18, soG2443 thatG2443 throughG1223 the commandmentG1785 sinG266 would becomeG1096 utterlyG5236 sinfulG266.
The Conflict of Serving Two Masters
14For we knowG3609 that the LawG3551 is 44spiritualG4152, but I amG1510 45fleshlyG4560, 46soldG4097 4748into bondage to sinG266. 15For 49I do not understandG1097 whatG3739 I am doingG2716; for I am not practicingG4238 50whatG3739 I wantG2309 to do, but I doG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3739 I hateG3404. 16HoweverG1161, ifG1487 I doG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3778 I do not wantG2309 to do, I agreeG4852 with 51the LawG3551, that the Law is goodG2570. 17But nowG3570, 52noG3765 longerG3765 am I the one doingG2716 it, but sinG266 that dwellsG1774 in me. 18For I knowG3609 that goodG18 does not dwellG3611 in me, that is, in my 53fleshG4561; for the willingG2309 is presentG3873 in me, but the doingG2716 of the goodG2570 is not. 19For 54the goodG18 that I wantG2309, I do not doG4160, but I practiceG4238 the veryG3778 evilG2556 that I do not wantG2309. 20But ifG1487 I doG4160 the veryG3778 thingG3778 I do not wantG2309, 55I am noG3765 longerG3765 the one doingG2716 it, but sinG266 that dwellsG3611 in me.
21I findG2147 thenG686 56the 57principleG3551 that evilG2556 is presentG3873 in me, the one who wantsG2309 to doG4160 goodG2570. 22For I joyfullyG4913 agreeG4913 with the lawG3551 of GodG2316 58in 59the innerG2080 personG444, 23but I seeG991 60a differentG2087 lawG3551 in 61the partsG3196 of my body wagingG497 warG497 againstG497 the 62lawG3551 of my mindG3563, and makingG163 me aG163 prisonerG163 63of 64the lawG3551 of sinG266, the law which is in 65my body’s partsG3196. 24WretchedG5005 manG444 that I am! WhoG5101 will setG4506 me freeG4506 from 6667the bodyG4983 of thisG3778 68deathG2288? 2569ThanksG5485 be to GodG2316 throughG1223 JesusG2424 ChristG5547 our LordG2962! SoG686 thenG686, on the oneG3303 handG3303 I myselfG846 with my mindG3563 am servingG1398 the lawG3551 of GodG2316, but on the otherG1161, with my fleshG4561 70the lawG3551 of sinG266.
