Abraham’s Treachery

1Now AbrahamH85 journeyedH5265 from 1thereH8033 toward the landH776 of 2the 3NegevH5045, and 4settledH3427 betweenH996 KadeshH6946 and ShurH7793; then he sojournedH1481 in 5GerarH1642. 2AbrahamH85 saidH559 of SarahH8283 his wifeH802, “6She is my sisterH269.” So 7AbimelechH40 kingH4428 of GerarH1642 sentH7971 and tookH3947 SarahH8283. 38But GodH430 cameH935 to AbimelechH40 in a dreamH2472 of the nightH3915, and saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, 9you are a deadH4191 man becauseH5921 of the womanH802 whomH834 you have takenH3947, for she is 10marriedH1167H1166.” 4Now AbimelechH40 had not comeH7126 nearH7126 her; and he saidH559, “LordH136, 11will You slayH2026 a nationH1471, evenH1571 though 12blamelessH6662? 5Did he not himselfH1931 sayH559 to me, ‘She is my sisterH269’? And she 13herselfH1931 saidH559, ‘He is my brotherH251.’ In 14the integrityH8537 of my heartH3824 and the innocenceH5356 of my 15handsH3709 I have doneH6213 thisH2088.” 6Then GodH430 saidH559 to him in the dreamH2472, “YesH1571, I knowH3045 that in the integrityH8537 of your heartH3824 you have doneH6213 thisH2088, and I alsoH1571 1617keptH2820 you from sinningH2398 against Me; thereforeH5921H3651 I did not letH5414 you touchH5060 her. 7NowH6258 therefore, restoreH7725 the man’sH376 wifeH802, for 18he is a prophetH5030, and he will prayH6419 for you and you will liveH2421. But ifH518 you do not restoreH7725 her, knowH3045 that you shall surelyH4191 dieH4191, you and allH3605 whoH834 are yours.”

8So AbimelechH40 aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and calledH7121 allH3605 his servantsH5650 and toldH1696 allH3605 theseH428 thingsH1697 in their hearingH241; and the menH376 were greatlyH3966 frightenedH3372. 919Then AbimelechH40 calledH7121 AbrahamH85 and saidH559 to him, “WhatH4100 have you doneH6213 to us? And 20howH4100 have I sinnedH2398 against you, that you have broughtH935 on me and on my kingdomH4467 21a greatH1419 sinH2401? You have doneH6213 to me 22thingsH4639 that ought not to be doneH6213.” 10And AbimelechH40 saidH559 to AbrahamH85, “WhatH4100 have you 23encounteredH7200, that you have doneH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697?” 11AbrahamH85 saidH559, “BecauseH3588 I thoughtH559, surelyH7534 thereH369 is noH369 24fearH3374 of GodH430 in thisH2088 placeH4725, and 25they will killH2026 me becauseH5921H1697 of my wifeH802. 12BesidesH1571, she actuallyH546 is my sisterH269, the daughterH1323 of my fatherH1, but not the daughterH1323 of my motherH517, and she becameH1961 my wifeH802; 13and it cameH1961 about, whenH3512 26GodH430 caused me to wanderH8582 from my father’sH1 houseH1004, that I saidH559 to her, ‘ThisH2088 is 27the kindnessH2617 whichH834 you will showH6213 to me: 28everywhereH413H3605H4725H834H8033 we goH935, 29sayH559 of me, “He is my brotherH251.”’” 1430AbimelechH40 then tookH3947 sheepH6629 and oxenH1241 and maleH5650 and femaleH8198 servantsH5650H8198, and gaveH5414 them to AbrahamH85, and restoredH7725 his wifeH802 SarahH8283 to him. 15AbimelechH40 saidH559, “31BeholdH2009, my landH776 is beforeH6440 you; 32settleH3427 wherever 33you pleaseH2896H5869.” 16To SarahH8283 he saidH559, “BeholdH2009, I have givenH5414 your 34brotherH251 a thousandH505 pieces of silverH3701; beholdH2009, it is 35your vindicationH3682 before allH3605 whoH834 are with you, and beforeH854 allH3605 menH3605 you are clearedH3198.” 1736AbrahamH85 prayedH6419 to GodH430, and GodH430 healedH7495 AbimelechH40 and his wifeH802 and his maidsH519, so that they boreH3205 children. 1837For the LordH3068 had closedH6113 fastH6113 allH3605 the wombsH7358 of the householdH1004 of AbimelechH40 becauseH5921H1697 of SarahH8283, Abraham’sH85 wifeH802.
