Jacob Meets Rachel

1Then JacobH3290 1wentH5375 on his journeyH7272, and cameH1980 to the landH776 of 2the sonsH1121 of the eastH6924. 2He lookedH7200, and 3sawH7200 4a wellH875 in the fieldH7704, and beholdH2009, threeH7969 flocksH5739 of sheepH6629 were lyingH7257 thereH8033 besideH5921 it, for from that wellH875 they wateredH8248 the flocksH5739. Now the stoneH68 on the mouthH6310 of the wellH875 was largeH1419. 3When allH3605 the flocksH5739 were gatheredH622 thereH8033, they would then rollH1556 the stoneH68 from the mouthH6310 of the wellH875 and waterH8248 the sheepH6629, and putH7725 the stoneH68 backH7725 in its placeH4725 on the mouthH6310 of the wellH875.

4JacobH3290 saidH559 to them, “My brothersH251, whereH370 are you from?” And they saidH559, “We are from 5HaranH2771.” 5He saidH559 to them, “Do you knowH3045 LabanH3837 the 6sonH1121 of NahorH5152?” And they saidH559, “We knowH3045 him.” 6And he saidH559 to them, “Is it wellH7965 with him?” And they saidH559, “It is wellH7965, and hereH2009 is 7RachelH7354 his daughterH1323 comingH935 with the sheepH6629.” 7He saidH559, “BeholdH2005, it is stillH5750 highH1419 dayH3117; it is not timeH6256 for the livestockH4735 to be gatheredH622. WaterH8248 the sheepH6629, and goH1980, pastureH7462 them.” 8But they saidH559, “We cannotH3201H3808, untilH5704H834 allH3605 the flocksH5739 are gatheredH622, and they rollH1556 the stoneH68 from the mouthH6310 of the wellH875; then we waterH8248 the sheepH6629.”

9While he was stillH5750 speakingH1696 with them, RachelH7354 cameH935 with her father’sH1 sheepH6629, for she was a shepherdessH7462. 10WhenH3512 JacobH3290 sawH7200 RachelH7354 the daughterH1323 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brotherH251, and the sheepH6629 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brotherH251, JacobH3290 wentH5066 up and rolledH1556 the stoneH68 from the mouthH6310 of the wellH875 and wateredH8248 the flockH6629 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brotherH251. 11Then JacobH3290 8kissedH5401 RachelH7354, and liftedH5375 his voiceH6963 and weptH1058. 12JacobH3290 toldH5046 RachelH7354 that he was a 910relativeH251 of her fatherH1 and that he was Rebekah’sH7259 sonH1121, and 11she ranH7323 and toldH5046 her fatherH1.

13So when 12LabanH3837 heardH8085 the newsH8088 of JacobH3290 his sister’sH269 sonH1121, he ranH7323 to meetH7122 him, and 13embracedH2263 him and kissedH5401 him and broughtH935 him to his houseH1004. Then he relatedH5608 to LabanH3837 allH3605 theseH428 thingsH1697. 14LabanH3837 saidH559 to him, “SurelyH389 you are 14my boneH6106 and my fleshH1320.” And he stayedH3427 with him a monthH2320.

15Then LabanH3837 saidH559 to JacobH3290, “BecauseH3588 you are my 15relativeH251, should you therefore serveH5647 me for nothingH2600? TellH5046 me, whatH4100 shall 16your wagesH4909 be?” 16Now LabanH3837 had twoH8147 daughtersH1323; the nameH8034 of the olderH1419 was LeahH3812, and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 was RachelH7354. 17And Leah’sH3812 eyesH5869 were weakH7390, but RachelH7354 was 17beautifulH3303 of formH8389 and 18faceH4758. 18Now JacobH3290 19lovedH157 RachelH7354, so he saidH559, “20I will serveH5647 you sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for your youngerH6996 daughterH1323 RachelH7354.” 19LabanH3837 saidH559, “It is betterH2896 that I giveH5414 her to you thanH4480 to giveH5414 her to anotherH312 manH376; stayH3427 with me.” 20So JacobH3290 servedH5647 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for RachelH7354 and they seemedH1961H5869 to him but a fewH259 daysH3117 21because of his loveH160 for her.

Laban’s Treachery

21Then JacobH3290 saidH559 to LabanH3837, “GiveH3051 me my wifeH802, for my 22timeH3117 is completedH4390, that I may 23goH935 in to her.” 22LabanH3837 gatheredH622 allH3605 the menH376 of the placeH4725 and madeH6213 a feastH4960. 23Now in the eveningH6153 he tookH3947 his daughterH1323 LeahH3812, and broughtH935 her to him; and Jacob wentH935 in to her. 24LabanH3837 also gaveH5414 his maidH8198 ZilpahH2153 to his daughterH1323 LeahH3812 as a maidH8198. 25So it cameH1961 about in the morningH1242 that, beholdH2009, it was LeahH3812! And he saidH559 to LabanH3837, “24WhatH4100 is thisH2088 you have doneH6213 to me? Was it not for RachelH7354 that I servedH5647 with you? WhyH4100 then have you 25deceivedH7411 me?” 26But LabanH3837 saidH559, “It is not 26the practiceH6213H3651 in our placeH4725 to 27marryH5414 offH5414 the youngerH6810 beforeH6440 the firstbornH1067. 27CompleteH4390 the weekH7620 of thisH2088 oneH2088, and we will giveH5414 you the otherH2088 alsoH1571 for the serviceH5656 whichH834 28you shall serveH5647 with me for anotherH312 sevenH7651 yearsH8141.” 28JacobH3290 didH6213 soH3651 and completedH4390 her weekH7620, and he gaveH5414 him his daughterH1323 RachelH7354 as his wifeH802. 29LabanH3837 also gaveH5414 his maidH8198 BilhahH1090 to his daughterH1323 RachelH7354 as her maidH8198. 30So Jacob wentH935 in to RachelH7354 alsoH1571, and indeedH1571 29he lovedH157 RachelH7354 moreH4480 thanH4480 LeahH3812, and he servedH5647 with 30Laban for 31anotherH312 sevenH7651 yearsH8141.

31Now the LordH3068 sawH7200 that LeahH3812 was 32unlovedH8130, and He openedH6605 her wombH7358, but RachelH7354 was barrenH6135. 32LeahH3812 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 and namedH7121H8034 him 33ReubenH7205, for she saidH559, “BecauseH3588 the LordH3068 has 3435seenH7200 my afflictionH6040; surelyH3588 nowH6258 my husbandH376 will loveH157 me.” 33Then she conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 and saidH559, “36BecauseH3588 the LordH3068 has 37heardH8085 that I am 38unlovedH8130, He has therefore givenH5414 me thisH2088 son alsoH1571.” So she namedH7121H8034 him SimeonH8095. 34She conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 and saidH559, “NowH6258 thisH6471 timeH6471 my husbandH376 will becomeH3867 39attachedH3867 to me, becauseH3588 I have borneH3205 him threeH7969 sonsH1121.” ThereforeH5921H3651 he was namedH7121H8034 40LeviH3878. 35And she conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 and saidH559, “ThisH6471 timeH6471 I will 41praiseH3034 the LordH3068.” ThereforeH5921H3651 she namedH7121H8034 him 4243JudahH3063. Then she stoppedH5975 bearingH3205.
