Jacob Moves to Bethel
1Then GodH430 saidH559 to JacobH3290, “AriseH6965, goH5927 up to 1BethelH1008 and 2liveH3427 thereH8033, and makeH6213 an altarH4196 thereH8033 to 3GodH410, who appearedH7200 to you 4when you fledH1272 5from your brotherH251 EsauH6215.” 2So JacobH3290 saidH559 to his 6householdH1004 and to allH3605 whoH834 were with him, “PutH5493 awayH5493 7the foreignH5236 godsH430 whichH834 are amongH8432 you, and 8purifyH2891 yourselves and changeH2498 your garmentsH8071; 3and let us ariseH6965 and goH5927 up to BethelH1008, and I will makeH6213 9an altarH4196 thereH8033 to GodH410, 10who answeredH6030 me in the dayH3117 of my distressH6869 and 11has beenH1961 with me 12whereverH1870H834 I have goneH1980.” 4So they gaveH5414 to JacobH3290 allH3605 the foreignH5236 godsH430 whichH834 13they hadH3027 and the ringsH5141 whichH834 were in their earsH241, and JacobH3290 hidH2934 them underH8478 the 14oakH424 whichH834 was nearH5973 ShechemH7927.
5As they journeyedH5265, there was 1516a greatH430 terrorH2847 upon the citiesH5892 whichH834 were aroundH5439 them, and they did not pursueH7291 the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290. 6So JacobH3290 cameH935 to 17LuzH3870 (that is, BethelH1008), whichH834 is in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, he and allH3605 the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with him. 718He builtH1129 an altarH4196 thereH8033, and calledH7121 the placeH4725 19El-bethelH416, becauseH3588 thereH8033 GodH430 had revealedH1540 Himself to him when he fledH1272 20from his brotherH251. 8Now 21DeborahH1683, Rebekah’sH7259 nurseH3243, diedH4191, and she was buriedH6912 belowH4480H8478 BethelH1008 underH8478 the oakH437; it was namedH7121H8034 22Allon-bacuthH439.
Jacob Is Named Israel
9Then GodH430 appearedH7200 to JacobH3290 againH5750 when he cameH935 from Paddan-aramH6307, and He 23blessedH1288 him. 1024GodH430 saidH559 to him, “Your nameH8034 is JacobH3290; 25You shall noH3808 longerH5750 be calledH7121 JacobH3290, But IsraelH3478 shall be your nameH8034.” Thus He calledH7121 26him IsraelH3478. 11GodH430 also saidH559 to him, “I am 2728GodH410 AlmightyH7706; 29Be fruitfulH6509 and multiplyH7235; A nationH1471 and a 30companyH6951 of nationsH1471 shall 31comeH1961 from you, And 32kingsH4428 shall 33comeH3318 forthH3318 from 34you.1235The landH776 whichH834 I gaveH5414 to AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327, I will giveH5414 it to you, And I will giveH5414 the landH776 to your 36descendantsH2233 after you.” 13Then 37GodH430 wentH5927 up from him in the placeH4725 whereH834 He had spokenH1696 with him. 14JacobH3290 setH5324 up 38a pillarH4676 in the placeH4725 whereH834 He had spokenH1696 with him, a pillarH4676 of stoneH68, and he pouredH5258 out a drinkH5262 offeringH5262 on it; he also pouredH3332 oilH8081 on it. 15So JacobH3290 namedH7121H8034 the placeH4725 whereH834H8033 GodH430 had spokenH1696 with him, 3940BethelH1008.
16Then they journeyedH5265 from BethelH1008; and when there was stillH5750 someH3530 distanceH3530H776 to goH935 to 41EphrathH672, RachelH7354 began to giveH3205 birthH3205 and she 42sufferedH7185 severeH7185 laborH3205. 17When she was in severeH7185 laborH3205 the midwifeH3205 saidH559 to her, “Do not fearH3372, for nowH1571H2088 43you have another sonH1121.” 18It cameH1961 about as her soulH5315 was departingH3318 (for she diedH4191), that she namedH7121H8034 him 44Ben-oniH1126; but his fatherH1 calledH7121 him 45BenjaminH1144. 19So 46RachelH7354 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 on the wayH1870 to 47EphrathH672 (that is, BethlehemH1035). 20JacobH3290 setH5324 up a pillarH4676 overH5921 her graveH6900; that is the 48pillarH4676 of Rachel’sH7354 graveH6900 to this dayH3117. 21Then IsraelH3478 journeyedH5265 on and pitchedH5186 his tentH168 beyondH4480H1973 the 4950towerH4029 of 51EderH4029.
The Sons of Israel
22It cameH1961 about while IsraelH3478 was dwellingH7931 in that landH776, that 52ReubenH7205 wentH1980 and layH7901 with BilhahH1090 his father’sH1 concubineH6370, and IsraelH3478 heardH8085 of it.
Now there were twelveH8147H6240 sonsH1121 of JacobH3290-- 2353the sonsH1121 of LeahH3812: ReubenH7205, Jacob’sH3290 firstbornH1060, then SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878 and JudahH3063 and IssacharH3485 and ZebulunH2074; 2454the sonsH1121 of RachelH7354: JosephH3130 and BenjaminH1144; 25and 55the sonsH1121 of BilhahH1090, Rachel’sH7354 maidH8198: DanH1835 and NaphtaliH5321; 26and 56the sonsH1121 of ZilpahH2153, Leah’sH3812 maidH8198: GadH1410 and AsherH836. TheseH428 are the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 whoH834 were bornH3205 to him in Paddan-aramH6307.
27JacobH3290 cameH935 to his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 at 57MamreH4471 of 58Kiriath-arbaH7153 (that is, HebronH2275), whereH834H8033 AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327 had sojournedH1481.
28Now the daysH3117 of IsaacH3327 were 59one hundredH3967 and eightyH8084 yearsH8141. 29IsaacH3327 breathedH1478 his lastH1478 and diedH4191 and was 60gatheredH622 to his peopleH5971, an 61oldH2205 manH2205 62of ripeH7649 ageH3117; and 63his sonsH1121 EsauH6215 and JacobH3290 buriedH6912 him.
