Abram Journeys to Egypt
1Now 1the LordH3068 saidH559 to AbramH87, “2GoH1980 forth from your countryH776, And from your relativesH4138 And from your father’sH1 houseH1004, To the landH776 whichH834 I will showH7200 you;2And 3I will makeH6213 you a greatH1419 nationH1471, And 4I will blessH1288 you, And makeH1431 your nameH8034 greatH1431; And so 56you shall be a blessingH1293;3And 7I will blessH1288 those who blessH1288 you, And the one who 8cursesH7043 you I will 9curseH779. 10And in you allH3605 the familiesH4940 of the earthH127 will be blessedH1288.”
4So AbramH87 wentH1980 forth as the LordH3068 had spokenH1696 to him; and 11LotH3876 wentH1980 with him. Now AbramH87 was seventy-fiveH7657 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he departedH3318 from HaranH2771. 5AbramH87 tookH3947 SaraiH8297 his wifeH802 and LotH3876 his nephewH1121H251, and allH3605 their 12possessionsH7399 whichH834 they had accumulatedH7408, and 13the 14personsH5315 whichH834 they had acquiredH6213 in HaranH2771, and they 15setH3318H1980 out for the landH776 of CanaanH3667; 16thus they cameH935 to the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 6AbramH87 passedH5674 throughH5674 the landH776 as farH5704 as the siteH4725 of 17ShechemH7927, to the 18oakH436 of MorehH4176. Now the CanaaniteH3669 was thenH227 in the landH776. 7The LordH3068 19appearedH7200 to AbramH87 and saidH559, “20To your 21descendantsH2233 I will giveH5414 thisH2088 landH776.” So he builtH1129 22an altarH4196 thereH8033 to the LordH3068 who had appearedH7200 to him. 8Then he proceededH6275 from thereH8033 to the mountainH2022 on the eastH6924 of BethelH1008, and pitchedH5186 his tentH168, with 23BethelH1008 on the westH3220 and AiH5857 on the eastH6924; and thereH8033 he builtH1129 an altarH4196 to the LordH3068 and 24calledH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LordH3068. 9AbramH87 journeyedH5265 on, continuingH1980H5265 toward 25the 26NegevH5045.
10Now there was 27a famineH7458 in the landH776; so AbramH87 wentH3381 downH3381 to EgyptH4714 to sojournH1481 thereH8033, for the famineH7458 was 28severeH3515 in the landH776. 11It cameH1961 about whenH3512 he 29cameH7126H935 nearH7126 to EgyptH4714, that he saidH559 to SaraiH8297 his wifeH802, “SeeH2009 nowH4994, I knowH3045 that you are a 3031beautifulH3303 womanH802; 1232and whenH3588 the EgyptiansH4713 seeH7200 you, they will sayH559, ‘ThisH2088 is his wifeH802’; and they will killH2026 me, but they will let you liveH2421. 13PleaseH4994 sayH559 that you are 33my sisterH269 soH4616 that it may goH3190 wellH3190 with me becauseH5668 of you, and that 3435I may liveH2421 on accountH1558 of you.” 14It cameH1961 about when AbramH87 cameH935 into EgyptH4714, the EgyptiansH4713 36sawH7200 that the womanH802 was veryH3966 beautifulH3303. 15Pharaoh’sH6547 officialsH8269 sawH7200 her and praisedH1984 her to PharaohH6547; and 37the womanH802 was takenH3947 into Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004. 16Therefore 38he treatedH3190 AbramH87 wellH3190 for her sakeH5668; and 3940gaveH1961 him sheepH6629 and oxenH1241 and donkeysH2543 and maleH5650 and femaleH8198 servantsH8198 and femaleH860 donkeysH860 and camelsH1581.
17But the LordH3068 41struckH5060 PharaohH6547 and his houseH1004 with greatH1419 plaguesH5061 becauseH5921H1697 of SaraiH8297, Abram’sH87 wifeH802. 18Then PharaohH6547 calledH7121 AbramH87 and saidH559, “42WhatH4100 is thisH2088 you have doneH6213 to me? WhyH4100 did you not tellH5046 me that she was your wifeH802? 19WhyH4100 did you sayH559, ‘She is my sisterH269,’ so that I tookH3947 her for my wifeH802? NowH6258 then, 43hereH2009 is your wifeH802, takeH3947 her and goH1980.” 20PharaohH6547 commandedH6680 his menH376 concerningH5921 him; and they 44escortedH7971 him awayH7971, with his wifeH802 and allH3605 that belonged to him.
