Jacob’s Fear of Esau

1Now as JacobH3290 wentH1980 on his wayH1870, 1the angelsH4397 of GodH430 metH6293 him. 2JacobH3290 saidH559 whenH3512 he sawH7200 them, “ThisH2088 is God’sH430 2campH4264.” So he namedH7121H8034 that placeH4725 34MahanaimH4266.

3Then JacobH3290 5sentH7971 messengersH4397 beforeH6440 him to his brotherH251 EsauH6215 in the landH776 of 6SeirH8165, the 7countryH7704 of 8EdomH112. 4He also commandedH6680 them sayingH559, “ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to my lordH113 EsauH6215: ‘ThusH3541 saysH559 your servantH5650 JacobH3290, “I have sojournedH1481 with LabanH3837, and 9stayedH309 untilH5704 nowH6258; 510I haveH1961 oxenH7794 and donkeysH2543 and flocksH6629 and maleH5650 and femaleH8198 servantsH5650H8198; and I have sentH7971 to tellH5046 my lordH113, 11that I may findH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869.”’”

Jacob Wrestles

24Then JacobH3290 was leftH3498 aloneH905, and a manH376 34wrestledH79 with him untilH5704 daybreakH7837. 25When he sawH7200 that he had not prevailedH3201 against him, he touchedH5060 the socketH3709 of his thighH3409; so the socketH3709 of Jacob’sH3290 thighH3409 was dislocatedH3363 while he wrestledH79 with him. 26Then he saidH559, “LetH7971 me goH7971, for the dawnH7837 is breakingH5927.” But he saidH559, “35I will not letH7971 you goH7971 unlessH3588H518 you blessH1288 me.” 27So he saidH559 to him, “WhatH4100 is your nameH8034?” And he saidH559, “JacobH3290.” 2836He saidH559, “Your nameH8034 shall noH3808 longerH5750 be JacobH3290, but 37IsraelH3478; for you have strivenH8280 with GodH430 and with menH376 and have prevailedH3201.” 29Then 38JacobH3290 askedH7592 him and saidH559, “PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me your nameH8034.” But he saidH559, “WhyH4100 is it that you askH7592 my nameH8034?” And he blessedH1288 him thereH8033. 30So JacobH3290 namedH7121H8034 the placeH4725 39PenielH6439, for he said, “40I have seenH7200 GodH430 faceH6440 to faceH6440, yet my 41lifeH5315 has been preservedH5337.” 31Now the sunH8121 roseH2224 upon him justH3512 as he crossedH5674 overH5674 42PenuelH6439, and he was limpingH6760 on his thighH3409. 32ThereforeH5921H3651, to thisH2088 dayH3117 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 do not eatH398 the sinewH1517 of the hipH5384 whichH834 is on the socketH3709 of the thighH3409, becauseH3588 he touchedH5060 the socketH3709 of Jacob’sH3290 thighH3409 in the sinewH1517 of the hipH5384.
