The Sons of Jacob
1Now when RachelH7354 sawH7200 that 1she boreH3205 JacobH3290 noH3808 children, 2she becameH7065 jealousH7065 of her sisterH269; and she saidH559 to JacobH3290, “3GiveH3051 me childrenH1121, or elseH518H369 I dieH4191.” 2Then Jacob’sH3290 angerH639 burnedH2734 against RachelH7354, and he saidH559, “Am I in the placeH8478 of GodH430, whoH834 has 4withheldH4513 from you the fruitH6529 of the wombH990?” 3She saidH559, “5HereH2009 is my maidH519 BilhahH1090, goH935 in to her that she may 6bearH3205 on my kneesH1290, that 78throughH4480 her I tooH1571 may haveH1129 childrenH1129.” 4So 9she gaveH5414 him her maidH8198 BilhahH1090 as a wifeH802, and JacobH3290 wentH935 in to her. 5BilhahH1090 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 JacobH3290 a sonH1121. 6Then RachelH7354 saidH559, “GodH430 has 1011vindicatedH1777 me, and has indeedH1571 heardH8085 my voiceH6963 and has givenH5414 me a sonH1121.” ThereforeH5921H3651 she namedH7121 him 12DanH1835. 7Rachel’sH7354 maidH8198 BilhahH1090 conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 JacobH3290 a secondH8145 sonH1121. 8So RachelH7354 saidH559, “With 13mightyH430 wrestlingsH5319 I have 14wrestledH6617 with my sisterH269, and I have indeedH1571 prevailedH3201.” And she namedH7121 him NaphtaliH5321.
9When LeahH3812 sawH7200 that she had stoppedH5975 bearingH3205, she tookH3947 her maidH8198 ZilpahH2153 and gaveH5414 her to JacobH3290 as a wifeH802. 10Leah’sH3812 maidH8198 ZilpahH2153 boreH3205 JacobH3290 a sonH1121. 11Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “15How fortunateH1409!” So she namedH7121 him 16GadH1410. 12Leah’sH3812 maidH8198 ZilpahH2153 boreH3205 JacobH3290 a secondH8145 sonH1121. 13Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “17HappyH837 am I! For womenH1323 18will callH7121 me happyH833.” So she namedH7121 him 19AsherH836.
14Now in the daysH3117 of wheatH2406 harvestH7105 ReubenH7205 wentH1980 and foundH4672 20mandrakesH1736 in the fieldH7704, and broughtH935 them to his motherH517 LeahH3812. Then RachelH7354 saidH559 to LeahH3812, “PleaseH4994 giveH5414 me someH4480 of your son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.” 15But she saidH559 to her, “Is it a smallH4592 matterH4592 for you to takeH3947 my husbandH376? And would you takeH3947 my son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736 alsoH1571?” So RachelH7354 saidH559, “ThereforeH3651 he may lieH7901 with you tonightH3915 in returnH8478 for your son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.” 16When JacobH3290 cameH935 in from the fieldH7704 in the eveningH6153, then LeahH3812 wentH3318 out to meetH7122 him and saidH559, “You must comeH935 in to me, for I have surelyH7936 hiredH7936 you with my son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.” So he layH7901 with her that nightH3915. 17GodH430 gaveH8085 heedH8085 to LeahH3812, and she conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 JacobH3290 a fifthH2549 sonH1121. 18Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “GodH430 has givenH5414 me my 21wagesH7939 becauseH834 I gaveH5414 my maidH8198 to my husbandH376.” So she namedH7121 him IssacharH3485. 19LeahH3812 conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 a sixthH8345 sonH1121 to JacobH3290. 20Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “GodH430 has endowedH2064 me with a goodH2896 giftH2065; nowH6471 my husbandH376 22will dwellH2082 with me, becauseH3588 I have borneH3205 him sixH8337 sonsH1121.” So she namedH7121 him ZebulunH2074. 21AfterwardH310 she boreH3205 a daughterH1323 and namedH7121H8034 her DinahH1783.
22Then 23GodH430 rememberedH2142 RachelH7354, and GodH430 gaveH8085 heedH8085 to her and 24openedH6605 her wombH7358. 23So she conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 and saidH559, “GodH430 has 25takenH622 awayH622 my reproachH2781.” 24She namedH7121H8034 him JosephH3130, sayingH559, “26May the LordH3068 27giveH3254 me anotherH312 sonH1121.”
Jacob Prospers
25Now it cameH1961 about whenH3512 RachelH7354 had borneH3205 JosephH3130, that JacobH3290 saidH559 to LabanH3837, “28SendH7971 me awayH7971, that I may goH1980 to my own placeH4725 and to my own countryH776. 26GiveH5414 me my wivesH802 and my childrenH3206 29for whomH834 I have servedH5647 you, and let me departH1980; for you yourselfH859 knowH3045 my serviceH5656 whichH834 I have 30renderedH5647 you.” 27But LabanH3837 saidH559 to him, “IfH518 nowH4994 31it pleasesH4672H2580 you, stay with me; I have divinedH5172 32that the LordH3068 has blessedH1288 me on your accountH1558.” 28He 33continuedH559, “34NameH5344 me your wagesH7939, and I will giveH5414 it.” 29But he saidH559 to him, “35You yourselfH859 knowH3045 howH854H834 I have servedH5647 you and howH854H834 your cattleH4735 have 36faredH1961 with me. 30For you hadH1961 littleH4592 beforeH6440 37I came and it has 38increasedH6555 to a multitudeH7230, and the LordH3068 has blessedH1288 you 39wherever I turnedH7272. But nowH6258, whenH4970 shall I provideH6213 for my own householdH1004 alsoH1571?” 31So he saidH559, “WhatH4100 shall I giveH5414 you?” And JacobH3290 saidH559, “You shall not giveH5414 me anythingH3972. IfH518 you will doH6213 thisH2088 one thingH1697 for me, I will againH7725 pastureH7462 and keepH8104 your flockH6629: 32let me passH5674 through your entireH3605 flockH6629 todayH3117, removingH5493 from thereH8033 everyH3605 40speckledH5348 and spottedH2921 sheepH7716 and everyH3605 blackH2345 41oneH7716 among the lambsH3775 and the spottedH2921 and speckledH5348 among the goatsH5795; and such shall be my wagesH7939. 33So my 42honestyH6666 will answerH6030 for me laterH4279H3117, whenH3588 you comeH935 concerningH5921 my 43wagesH7939. EveryH3605 oneH3605 that is not speckledH5348 and spottedH2921 among the goatsH5795 and blackH2345 among the lambsH3775, if found with me, will be considered stolenH1589.” 34LabanH3837 saidH559, “44GoodH2005, let it be according to your wordH1697.” 35So he removedH5493 on that dayH3117 the stripedH6124 and spottedH2921 maleH8495 goatsH8495 and allH3605 the speckledH5348 and spottedH2921 femaleH5795 goatsH5795, everyH3605 oneH3605 with whiteH3836 in it, and allH3605 the blackH2345 onesH2345 among the sheepH3775, and gaveH5414 them into the 45careH3027 of his sonsH1121. 36And he putH7760 a distance of threeH7969 days’H3117 journeyH1870 betweenH996 himself and JacobH3290, and JacobH3290 fedH7462 the restH3498 of Laban’sH3837 flocksH6629.
37Then JacobH3290 46tookH3947 freshH3892 rodsH4731 of poplarH3839 and almondH3869 and planeH6196 treesH6196, and peeledH6478 whiteH3836 stripesH6479 in them, exposingH4286 the whiteH3836 whichH834 was 47in the rodsH4731. 38He setH3322 the rodsH4731 whichH834 he had peeledH6478 in frontH5227 of the flocksH6629 in the guttersH7298, even in the wateringH4325 troughsH8268, whereH834 the flocksH6629 cameH935 to drinkH8354; and they 48matedH2552 when they cameH935 to drinkH8354. 39So the flocksH6629 49matedH2552 by the rodsH4731, and the flocksH6629 broughtH3205 forthH3205 stripedH6124, speckledH5348, and spottedH2921. 40JacobH3290 separatedH6504 the lambsH3775, and 50madeH5414 the flocksH6629 faceH6440 towardH413 the stripedH6124 and allH3605 the blackH2345 in the flockH6629 of LabanH3837; and he putH7896 his own herdsH5739 apartH905, and did not putH7896 them with Laban’sH3837 flockH6629. 41Moreover, wheneverH3605 the 51strongerH7194 of the flockH6629 52were matingH3179, JacobH3290 would placeH7760 the rodsH4731 in the sightH5869 of the flockH6629 in the guttersH7298, so that they might 53mateH3179 by the rodsH4731; 42but when the flockH6629 was feebleH5848, he did not putH7760 them in; so the feeblerH5848 were Laban’sH3837 and the 54strongerH7194 Jacob’sH3290. 43So 55the manH376 56becameH6555 exceedinglyH3966 prosperousH6555, and hadH1961 largeH7227 flocksH6629 and femaleH8198 and maleH5650 servantsH5650H8198 and camelsH1581 and donkeysH2543.
