Job 42:8
8Now therefore, take for yourselves 1seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a 2burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will 3pray for you. 4For I will 5accept him so that I may not do with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.”

- New International Version (NIV)So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. - New King James Version (NKJV)Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you. Context of Job 42:8
6Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes.” 7It came about after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is right as My servant Job has. Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will pray for you. For I will accept him so that I may not do with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.” 9So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job. 10The Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased all that Job had twofold.

Commentaries on Job 42:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Take - seven bullocks and seven rams - From this it appears that Job was considered a priest, not only in his own family but also for others. For his children he offered burnt-offerings, Job 1:5; and now he is to make the same kind of offerings, accompanied with intercession, in behalf of his three friends. This is a full proof of the innocence and integrity of Job: a more decided one could not be given, that the accusations of his friends, and their…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Therefore take unto you - Or, FOR yourselves. Seven bullocks and seven rams - The number “seven” was a common number in offering animals for sacrifice; see Leviticus 23:18; Numbers 29:32. It was not a number, however, confined at all to Jewish sacrifices, for we find that Balaam gave the direction to Balak, king of Moab, to prepare just this number for sacrifice. “And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 After the Lord had convinced and humbled Job, and brought him to repentance, he owned him, comforted him, and put honour upon him. The devil had undertaken to prove Job a hypocrite, and his three friends had condemned him as a wicked man; but if God say, Well done, thou good and faithful servant, it is of little consequence who says otherwise. Job's friends had wronged God, by making prosperity a mark of the true church, and affliction a…Read the comment

My servant Job will pray for you: He had also prayed for his children (1:5; compare James 5:16; 1 John 5:16). When the LORD accepted Job’s prayer, it ironically fulfilled Eliphaz’s promise (Job…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. seven--(See Introduction). The number offered by the Gentile prophet (Nu 23:1). Job plainly lived before the legal priesthood, &c. The patriarchs acted as priests for their families; and sometimes as praying mediators (Ge 20:17), thus foreshadowing the true Mediator (1Ti 2:5), but sacrifice accompanies and is the groundwork on which the mediation rests. him--rather, "His person [face] only" (see on Job 22:30). The "person," must be first accepted…Read the comment
