The Death of Israel

1Then JosephH3130 fellH5307 on his father’sH1 faceH6440, and weptH1058 overH5921 him and kissedH5401 him. 2JosephH3130 commandedH6680 his servantsH5650 the physiciansH7495 to embalmH2590 his fatherH1. So the physiciansH7495 1embalmedH2590 IsraelH3478. 3Now fortyH705 daysH3117 were 2requiredH4390 for 3it, for 4suchH3651 is the periodH3117 requiredH4390 for embalmingH2591. And the EgyptiansH4714 5weptH1058 for him seventyH7657 daysH3117.

4When the daysH3117 of 6mourningH1068 for him were pastH5674, JosephH3130 spokeH1696 to the householdH1004 of PharaohH6547, sayingH559, “IfH518 nowH4994 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869, pleaseH4994 speakH1696 7to PharaohH6547, sayingH559, 5‘8My fatherH1 made me swearH7650, sayingH559, “BeholdH2009, I am about to dieH4191; in my graveH6913 9whichH834 I dugH3738 for myself in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, thereH8033 you shall buryH6912 me.” NowH6258 therefore, pleaseH4994 let me goH5927 up and buryH6912 my fatherH1; then I will returnH7725.’” 6PharaohH6547 saidH559, “GoH5927 up and buryH6912 your fatherH1, as he made you swearH7650.”

7So JosephH3130 wentH5927 up to buryH6912 his fatherH1, and with him wentH5927 up allH3605 the servantsH5650 of PharaohH6547, the eldersH2205 of his householdH1004 and allH3605 the eldersH2205 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, 8and allH3605 the householdH1004 of JosephH3130 and his brothersH251 and his father’sH1 householdH1004; they leftH5800 onlyH7534 their littleH2945 onesH2945 and their flocksH6629 and their herdsH1241 in the landH776 of GoshenH1657. 9There also wentH5927 up with him bothH1571 chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571; and it was a veryH3966 greatH3515 companyH4264. 10When they cameH935 to the 10threshingH1637 floorH1637 of AtadH329, whichH834 is beyondH5676 the JordanH3383, they 11lamentedH5594 thereH8033 with a veryH3966 greatH1419 and 12sorrowfulH3515 lamentationH4553; and he 13observedH6213 sevenH7651 daysH3117 mourningH60 for his fatherH1. 11Now when the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776, the CanaanitesH3669, sawH7200 the mourningH60 at 14the threshingH1637 floorH1637 of AtadH329, they saidH559, “ThisH2088 is a 15grievousH3515 16mourningH60 for the EgyptiansH4714.” ThereforeH5921H3651 it was namedH7121H8034 17Abel-mizraimH67, whichH834 is beyondH5676 the JordanH3383.

Burial at Machpelah

12ThusH3651 his sonsH1121 didH6213 for him as he had chargedH6680 them; 13for his sonsH1121 carriedH5375 him to the landH776 of CanaanH3667 and buriedH6912 him in 18the caveH4631 of the fieldH7704 of MachpelahH4375 beforeH5921H6440 MamreH4471, whichH834 AbrahamH85 had boughtH7069 along with the fieldH7704 for a 19burialH6913 siteH272 from EphronH6085 the HittiteH2850. 14AfterH310 he had buriedH6912 his fatherH1, JosephH3130 returnedH7725 to EgyptH4714, he and his brothersH251, and allH3605 who had goneH5927 up with him to buryH6912 his fatherH1.

15When Joseph’sH3130 brothersH251 sawH7200 that their fatherH1 was deadH4191, they saidH559, “20What if JosephH3130 bearsH7852 a grudgeH7852 againstH7852 us and paysH7725 us backH7725 in fullH7725 for allH3605 the wrongH7463 whichH834 we didH1580 to him!” 16So they 21sentH6680 a message to JosephH3130, sayingH559, “Your fatherH1 chargedH6680 beforeH6440 he diedH4194, sayingH559, 17‘ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to JosephH3130, “PleaseH4994 forgiveH5375, I begH577 you, the transgressionH6588 of your brothersH251 and their sinH2403, for they didH1580 you wrongH7463.”’ And nowH6258, pleaseH4994 forgiveH5375 the transgressionH6588 of the servantsH5650 of the GodH430 of your fatherH1.” And JosephH3130 weptH1058 when they spokeH1696 to him. 18Then his brothersH251 alsoH1571 cameH1980 and 22fellH5307 downH5307 beforeH6440 him and saidH559, “BeholdH2009, we are your servantsH5650.” 19But JosephH3130 saidH559 to them, “Do not be afraidH3372, for am I in God’sH430 placeH8478? 20As for you, 23you meantH2803 evilH7463 againstH5921 me, but GodH430 meantH2803 it for goodH2899 in orderH4616 to bringH6213 aboutH6213 24thisH2088 presentH3117 result, to preserveH2421 manyH7227 peopleH5971 aliveH2421. 21SoH6258 therefore, do not be afraidH3372; 25I will provideH3557 for you and your littleH2945 onesH2945.” So he comfortedH5162 them and spokeH1696 26kindlyH3820 to them.

Death of Joseph

22Now JosephH3130 stayedH3427 in EgyptH4714, he and his father’sH1 householdH1004, and JosephH3130 livedH2421 one hundredH3967 and tenH6235 yearsH8141. 23JosephH3130 sawH7200 the thirdH8029 generation of Ephraim’sH669 sonsH1121; alsoH1571 the sonsH1121 of MachirH4353, the sonH1121 of ManassehH4519, were 27bornH3205 on Joseph’sH3130 kneesH1290. 24JosephH3130 saidH559 to his brothersH251, “28I am about to dieH4191, but GodH430 will surelyH6485 29takeH6485 careH6485 of you and bringH5927 you up from thisH2088 landH776 to the landH776 whichH834 He 30promisedH7650 on oathH7650 to 31AbrahamH85, to 32IsaacH3327 and to 33JacobH3290.” 25Then JosephH3130 made the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 swearH7650, sayingH559, “GodH430 will surelyH6485 34takeH6485 careH6485 of you, and 35you shall carryH5927 my bonesH6106 up from hereH2088.” 26So JosephH3130 diedH4191 at the ageH1121 of one hundredH3967 and tenH6235 yearsH8141; and 36he was 37embalmedH2590 and placedH7760 in a coffinH727 in EgyptH4714.
