Genesis 20
Now AbrahamH85 journeyedH5265 from thereH8033 to the regionH776 of the NegevH5045 and settledH3427 betweenH996 KadeshH6946H996 and ShurH7793. While he was stayingH1481 in GerarH1642, 2AbrahamH85 saidH559 ofH413 his wifeH802 SarahH8283, “SheH1931 is my sisterH269.” So AbimelechH40 kingH4428 of GerarH1642 had SarahH8283 broughtH7971 to himH3947.
One night, howeverH3915, GodH430 cameH935 toH413 AbimelechH40 in a dreamH2472 and toldH559 him, “You are as good as deadH4191 because ofH5921 the womanH802 you have takenH3947, for sheH1931 is a marriedH1166 womanH1167.”
Now AbimelechH40 had notH3808 goneH7126 near herH413, so he repliedH559, “LordH136, would You destroyH2026 a nationH1471 even thoughH1571 it is innocentH6662? 5Didn’tH3808 Abraham tellH559 me, ‘SheH1931 is my sisterH269’? And sheH1931H1571 herselfH1931 saidH559, ‘HeH1931 is my brotherH251.’ I have doneH6213 thisH2063 in the integrityH8537 of my heartH3824 and the innocenceH5356 of my handsH3709.”
Then GodH430 saidH559 toH413 Abimelech in the dreamH2472, “YesH1571, IH595 knowH3045 thatH3588 you didH6213 thisH2063 with a clearH8537 conscienceH3824, and so IH595H1571 have keptH2820 youH853 from sinningH2398 against Me. That is whyH5921H3651 I did notH3808 letH5414 you touchH5060 herH413. 7NowH6258 returnH7725 the man’sH376 wifeH802, forH3588 heH1931 is a prophetH5030; he will prayH6419 for youH1157 and you will liveH2421. But ifH518 you do notH369 restore herH7725, be awareH3045 thatH3588 you will surely dieH4191—youH859 and allH3605 who belongH834 to you.”
Early the next morningH1242 AbimelechH40 got upH7925 and summonedH7121 allH3605 his servantsH5650; and when he described to themH1696 allH3605 thatH428 had happenedH1697, the menH582 were terrifiedH3372H3966.
Then AbimelechH40 calledH7121 AbrahamH85 and askedH559, “WhatH4100 have you doneH6213 to us? HowH4100 have I sinnedH2398 against you, thatH3588 you have broughtH935 such tremendousH1419 guiltH2401 upon meH5921 andH5921 my kingdomH4467? You have doneH6213 thingsH4639 to meH5978 thatH834 should notH3808 be doneH6213.” 10AbimelechH40 also askedH559H413 AbrahamH85, “WhatH4100 promptedH7200H3588 you to doH6213 suchH2088 a thingH1697?”
AbrahamH85H3588 repliedH559, “I thought to myselfH559, ‘SurelyH7535 there is noH369 fearH3374 of GodH430 in thisH2088 placeH4725. They will kill meH2026 on account ofH5921H1697 my wifeH802.’ 12BesidesH1571, sheH1931 reallyH546 is my sisterH269, the daughterH1323 of my fatherH1—thoughH389 notH3808 the daughterH1323 of my motherH517—and she becameH1961 my wifeH802. 13So whenH834 GodH430 had me journeyH8582 from my father’sH1 houseH1004, I saidH559 to Sarah, ‘This is howH2088 you can showH6213 your loyaltyH2617 to meH5978H413: WhereverH3605H4725 we goH935H8033, sayH559 of me, “He isH1931 my brotherH251.”’”
So AbimelechH40 broughtH3947 sheepH6629 and cattleH1241, menservantsH5650 and maidservantsH8198, and he gave themH5414 to AbrahamH85 and restoredH7725 his wifeH802 SarahH8283 to him. 15And AbimelechH40 saidH559, “LookH2009, my landH776 is before youH6440. Settle wherever you pleaseH3427H2896H5869.” 16And he saidH559 to SarahH8283, “SeeH2009, I am givingH5414 your brotherH251H2009 a thousandH505 pieces of silverH3701.1 ItH1931 is your vindicationH3682H5869 before allH3605 whoH834 are with youH854; you are completelyH3605 clearedH3198.”
Then AbrahamH85 prayedH6419 toH413 GodH430, and GodH430 healedH7495 AbimelechH40 and his wifeH802 and his maidservantsH519, so that they could again bear childrenH3205— 18forH3588 onH5921 accountH1697 of Abraham’sH85 wifeH802 SarahH8283, the LORDH3068H1157 had completely closedH6113 allH3605 the wombsH7358 in Abimelech’sH40 householdH1004.
