Sarai and Hagar

1Now 1SaraiH8297, Abram’sH87 wifeH802 had borneH3205 him noH3808 children, and she had 2an EgyptianH4713 maidH8198 whose nameH8034 was HagarH1904. 2So SaraiH8297 saidH559 to AbramH87, “NowH4994 beholdH2009, the LordH3068 has preventedH6113 me from bearingH3205 children. 3PleaseH4994 goH935 in to my maidH8198; perhapsH194 I will 4obtainH1129 childrenH1129 throughH4480 her.” And AbramH87 listenedH8085 to the voiceH6963 of SaraiH8297. 3AfterH4480 AbramH87 had 5livedH3427 6tenH6235 yearsH8141 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, Abram’sH87 wifeH802 SaraiH8297 tookH3947 HagarH1904 the EgyptianH4713, her maidH8198, and gaveH5414 her to her husbandH376 AbramH87 as his wifeH802. 4He wentH935 in to HagarH1904, and she conceivedH2029; and when she sawH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, her mistressH1404 was despisedH7043 in her sightH5869. 5And SaraiH8297 saidH559 to AbramH87, “7May the wrongH2555 done me be upon you. I gaveH5414 my maidH8198 into your 8armsH2436, but when she sawH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, I was despisedH7043 in her 9sightH5869. 10May the LordH3068 judgeH8199 betweenH996 11you and me.” 6But AbramH87 saidH559 to SaraiH8297, “BeholdH2009, your maidH8198 is in your 12powerH3027; doH6213 to her whatH2896 is goodH2896 in your 13sightH5869.” So SaraiH8297 treatedH6031 her harshlyH6031, and 14she fledH1272 from her presenceH6440.

7Now 15the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 foundH4672 her by a springH5871 of waterH4325 in the wildernessH4057, by the springH5871 on the wayH1870 to 16ShurH7793. 8He saidH559, “HagarH1904, Sarai’sH8297 maidH8198, 17whereH335H2088 have you comeH935 from and whereH575 are you goingH1980?” And she saidH559, “I am fleeingH1272 from the presenceH6440 of my mistressH1404 SaraiH8297.” 9Then the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 saidH559 to her, “ReturnH7725 to your mistressH1404, and submitH6031 yourself 18to her authorityH3027.” 10Moreover, the 19angelH4397 of the LordH3068 saidH559 to her, “20I will greatlyH7235 multiplyH7235 your 21descendantsH2233 so that 22they will be tooH3808 manyH7230 to countH5608.” 11The angelH4397 of the LordH3068 saidH559 to her further, “BeholdH2009, you are with childH2030, And you will bearH3205 a sonH1121; And you shall callH7121 his nameH8034 23IshmaelH3458, BecauseH3588 24the LordH3068 25has givenH8085 heedH8085 to your afflictionH6040.12He will be a 26wildH6501 donkeyH6501 of a manH120, His handH3027 will be against everyoneH3605, And everyone’sH3605 handH3027 will be against him; And he will 27liveH7931 2829to the eastH6440 of allH3605 his brothersH251.” 13Then she calledH7121 the nameH8034 of the LordH3068 who spokeH1696 to her, “30You are 31a GodH410 whoH7210 seesH7200”; for she saidH559, “32Have I evenH1571 33remainedH7200 aliveH7200 hereH1988 afterH310 seeingH7210 Him?” 14ThereforeH5921H3651 the wellH875 was calledH7121 34Beer-lahai-roiH883; beholdH2009, it is betweenH996 35KadeshH6946 and BeredH1260.

15So HagarH1904 boreH3205 AbramH87 a sonH1121; and AbramH87 calledH7121 the nameH8034 of his sonH1121, whomH834 HagarH1904 boreH3205, IshmaelH3458. 16AbramH87 was 36eighty-sixH8084 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when HagarH1904 boreH3205 IshmaelH3458 to 37him.
