A Bride for Isaac

1Now 1AbrahamH85 was oldH2204, advancedH935 in ageH3117; and the LordH3068 had 2blessedH1288 AbrahamH85 in everyH3605 wayH3605. 2AbrahamH85 saidH559 to his servantH5650, the oldestH2205 of his householdH1004, who hadH4910 3chargeH4910 of allH3605 that he owned, “4PleaseH4994 placeH7760 your handH3027 underH8478 my thighH3409, 3and I will make you swearH7650 by the LordH3068, 5the GodH430 of heavenH8064 and the GodH430 of earthH776, that you 6shall not takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 from the daughtersH1323 of 7the CanaanitesH3669, amongH7130 whomH834 I liveH3427, 4but you will goH1980 to 8my countryH776 and to my relativesH4138, and takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 IsaacH3327.” 5The servantH5650 saidH559 to him, “SupposeH194 the womanH802 is not willingH14 to followH1980H310 me to thisH2088 landH776; should I takeH7725 your sonH1121 backH7725 to the landH776 from whereH834H8033 you cameH3318?” 6Then AbrahamH85 saidH559 to him, “9BewareH8104 that you do not takeH7725 my sonH1121 backH7725 thereH8033! 710The LordH3068, the GodH430 of heavenH8064, whoH834 tookH3947 me from my father’sH1 houseH1004 and from the landH776 of my birthH4138, and whoH834 spokeH1696 to me and whoH834 sworeH7650 to me, sayingH559, ‘11To your 12descendantsH2233 I will giveH5414 thisH2088 landH776,’ He will sendH7971 13His angelH4397 beforeH6440 you, and you will takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 from thereH8033. 8But ifH518 the womanH802 is not willingH14 to followH1980H310 you, then you will 14be freeH5352 from thisH2088 my oathH7621; 15onlyH7534 do not takeH7725 my sonH1121 backH7725 thereH8033.” 9So the servantH5650 16placedH7760 his handH3027 underH8478 the thighH3409 of AbrahamH85 his masterH113, and sworeH7650 to him concerningH5921 thisH2088 matterH1697.

10Then the servantH5650 tookH3947 tenH6235 camelsH1581 from the camelsH1581 of his masterH113, and setH1980 out with a varietyH3605 of 17goodH2898 thingsH2898 of his master’sH113 in his handH3027; and he aroseH6965 and wentH1980 to 18MesopotamiaH763, to 19the cityH5892 of NahorH5152. 11He made the camelsH1581 kneelH1288 downH1288 outsideH4480H2351 the cityH5892 by 20the wellH875 of waterH4325 at eveningH6153 timeH6256, 21the timeH6256 when women goH3318 out to drawH7579 waterH7579. 12He saidH559, “22O LordH3068, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, pleaseH4994 2324grantH7136 me successH7136 todayH3117, and showH6213 lovingkindnessH2617 to my masterH113 AbrahamH85. 13BeholdH2009, 25I am standingH5324 by the 26springH5871, and the daughtersH1323 of the menH376 of the cityH5892 are comingH3318 out to drawH7579 waterH4325; 14now may it be that the girlH5291 to whomH834 I sayH559, ‘PleaseH4994 letH5186 downH5186 your jarH3537 so that I may drinkH8354,’ and 27who answersH559, ‘DrinkH8354, and I will waterH8248 your camelsH1581 alsoH1571’--may she be the one whom You have appointedH3198 for Your servantH5650 IsaacH3327; and by this I will knowH3045 that You have shownH6213 lovingkindnessH2617 to my masterH113.”

Rebekah Is Chosen

1528BeforeH2962 he had finishedH3615 speakingH1696, beholdH2009, 29RebekahH7259 whoH834 was bornH3205 to BethuelH1328 the sonH1121 of 30MilcahH4435, the wifeH802 of Abraham’sH85 brotherH251 NahorH5152, cameH3318 out with her jarH3537 on her shoulderH7926. 16The girlH5291 was 31veryH3966 beautifulH2896, a virginH1330, and noH3808 manH376 had 32hadH3045 relationsH3045 with her; and she wentH3381 downH3381 to the springH5871 and filledH4390 her jarH3537 and cameH5927 up. 17Then the servantH5650 ranH7323 to meetH7122 her, and saidH559, “33PleaseH4994 let me drinkH1572 a littleH4592 waterH4325 from your jarH3537.” 1834She saidH559, “DrinkH8354, my lordH113”; and she quicklyH4116 loweredH3381 her jarH3537 to her handH3027, and gaveH8248 him a drinkH8248. 19Now when she had finishedH3615 givingH8248 him a drinkH8248, 35she saidH559, “I will drawH7579 alsoH1571 for your camelsH1581 untilH5704H518 they have finishedH3615 drinkingH8354.” 20So she quicklyH4116 emptiedH6168 her jarH3537 into the troughH8268, and ranH7323 backH5750 to the wellH875 to drawH7579, and she drewH7579 for allH3605 his camelsH1581. 2136Meanwhile, the manH376 was gazingH7583 at her 37in silenceH2790, to knowH3045 whether the LordH3068 had madeH6743 his journeyH1870 successfulH6743 orH518 not.

22WhenH3512 the camelsH1581 had finishedH3615 drinkingH8354, the manH376 tookH3947 a 38goldH2091 ringH5141 weighingH4948 a half-shekelH1235 and twoH8147 braceletsH6781 for her 39wristsH3027 weighingH4948 tenH6235 shekels in goldH2091, 23and saidH559, “WhoseH4310 daughterH1323 are you? PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me, is thereH3426 roomH4725 for us to lodgeH3885 in your father’sH1 houseH1004?” 24She saidH559 to him, “40I am the daughterH1323 of BethuelH1328, the sonH1121 of MilcahH4435, whomH834 she boreH3205 to NahorH5152.” 25Again she saidH559 to him, “We have plentyH7227 of bothH1571 strawH8401 and feedH4554, and roomH4725 to lodgeH3885 in.” 26Then the manH376 41bowedH6915 lowH6915 and worshipedH7812 the LordH3068. 27He saidH559, “42BlessedH1288 be the LordH3068, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, whoH834 has not forsakenH5800 43His lovingkindnessH2617 and His truthH571 towardH4480H5973 my masterH113; as for me, 44the LordH3068 has guidedH5148 me in the wayH1870 to the houseH1004 of my master’sH113 brothersH251.”

28Then 45the girlH5291 ranH7323 and toldH5046 her mother’sH517 householdH1004 about theseH428 thingsH1697. 29Now RebekahH7259 had a brotherH251 whose nameH8034 was 46LabanH3837; and LabanH3837 ranH7323 outsideH2351 to the manH376 at the springH5871. 30When he sawH7200 the ringH5141 and the braceletsH6781 on his sister’sH269 47wristsH3027, and when he heardH8085 the wordsH1697 of RebekahH7259 his sisterH269, sayingH559, “48ThisH3541 is whatH3541 the manH376 saidH1696 to me,” he wentH935 to the manH376; and beholdH2009, he was standingH5975 by the camelsH1581 at the springH5871. 31And he saidH559, “49ComeH935 in, 50blessedH1288 of the LordH3068! WhyH4100 do you standH5975 outsideH2351 since 51I have preparedH6437 the houseH1004, and a placeH4725 for the camelsH1581?” 32So the manH376 enteredH935 the houseH1004. Then 5253Laban unloadedH6605 the camelsH1581, and he gaveH5414 strawH8401 and feedH4554 to the camelsH1581, and waterH4325 to washH7364 his feetH7272 and the feetH7272 of the menH376 whoH834 were with him. 33But when food was setH7760 beforeH6440 him to eatH398, he saidH559, “I will not eatH398 untilH5704H518 I have toldH1696 my businessH1697.” And he saidH559, “SpeakH1696 on.” 34So he saidH559, “I am 54Abraham’sH85 servantH5650. 35The LordH3068 has greatlyH3966 55blessedH1288 my masterH113, so that he has becomeH1431 56richH1431; and He has givenH5414 him 57flocksH6629 and herdsH1241, and silverH3701 and goldH2091, and servantsH5650 and maidsH8198, and camelsH1581 and donkeysH2543. 36Now 58SarahH8283 my master’sH113 wifeH802 boreH3205 a sonH1121 to my masterH113 59in her oldH2209 ageH2209, and 60he has givenH5414 him allH3605 that he has. 3761My masterH113 made me swearH7650, sayingH559, ‘You shall not takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 from the daughtersH1323 of the CanaanitesH3669, in whoseH834 landH776 I 62liveH3427; 38but you shall goH1980 to my father’sH1 houseH1004 and to my relativesH4940, and takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121.’ 3963I saidH559 to my masterH113, ‘SupposeH194 the womanH802 does not followH1980H310 me.’ 40He saidH559 to me, ‘64The LordH3068, beforeH6440 whomH834 I have 65walkedH1980, will sendH7971 66His angelH4397 with you to make your journeyH1870 successfulH6743, and you will takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 from my relativesH4940 and from my father’sH1 houseH1004; 4167thenH227 you will be freeH5352 from my oathH423, whenH3588 you comeH935 to my relativesH4940; and ifH518 they do not giveH5414 her to you, you will be freeH5355 from my oathH423.’

42“So 68I cameH935 todayH3117 to the springH5871, and saidH559, ‘O LordH3068, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, ifH518 nowH4994 You will make my journeyH1870 on whichH834 I goH1980 69successfulH6743; 43beholdH2009, 70I am standingH5324 by the 71springH5871, and may it be that the maidenH5959 who comesH3318 out to drawH7579, and to whom I sayH559, “72PleaseH4994 let me drinkH8248 a littleH4592 waterH4325 from your jarH3537”; 44and she will sayH559 to me, “You drinkH8354, and I will drawH7579 for your camelsH1581 alsoH1571”; let her be the womanH802 whomH834 the LordH3068 has appointedH3198 for my master’sH113 sonH1121.’

45“BeforeH2962 I had finishedH3615 73speakingH1696 in my heartH3820, beholdH2009, 74RebekahH7259 cameH3318 out with her jarH3537 on her shoulderH7926, and wentH3381 downH3381 to the springH5871 and drewH7579, and 75I saidH559 to her, ‘PleaseH4994 let me drinkH8248.’ 46She quicklyH4116 loweredH3381 her jarH3537 from her shoulder, and saidH559, ‘76DrinkH8354, and I will waterH8248 your camelsH1581 alsoH1571’; so I drankH8354, and she wateredH8248 the camelsH1581 alsoH1571. 4777Then I askedH7592 her, and saidH559, ‘WhoseH4310 daughterH1323 are you?’ And she saidH559, ‘The daughterH1323 of BethuelH1328, Nahor’sH5152 sonH1121, whomH834 MilcahH4435 boreH3205 to him’; and I putH7760 the 78ringH5141 on her noseH639, and the braceletsH6781 on her 79wristsH3027. 48And I 80bowedH6915 lowH6915 and worshipedH7812 the LordH3068, and blessedH1288 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, 81whoH834 had guidedH5148 me in the rightH571 wayH1870 to takeH3947 the daughterH1323 of my master’sH113 82kinsmanH251 for his sonH1121. 49So nowH6258 ifH518 you are goingH3426 to 8384dealH6213 kindlyH2617 and trulyH571 with my masterH113, tellH5046 me; and ifH518 not, let me knowH5046, that I may turnH6437 to the rightH3225 handH3225 orH176 the leftH8040.”

50Then LabanH3837 and BethuelH1328 repliedH6030, “85The matterH1697 comesH3318 from the LordH3068; 86so we cannotH3201H3808 speakH1696 to you badH7451 orH176 goodH2896. 51HereH2009 is RebekahH7259 beforeH6440 you, takeH3947 her and goH1980, and let her be the wifeH802 of your master’sH113 sonH1121, as the LordH3068 has spokenH1696.”

52WhenH3512 Abraham’sH85 servantH5650 heardH8085 their wordsH1697, he 87bowedH7812 himself to the groundH776 88before the LordH3068. 53The servantH5650 broughtH3318 out 89articlesH3627 of silverH3701 and articlesH3627 of goldH2091, and garmentsH899, and gaveH5414 them to RebekahH7259; he also gaveH5414 preciousH4030 thingsH4030 to her brotherH251 and to her motherH517. 54Then he and the menH376 whoH834 were with him ateH398 and drankH8354 and spentH3885 the nightH3885. When they aroseH6965 in the morningH1242, he saidH559, “90SendH7971 me awayH7971 to my masterH113.” 55But her brotherH251 and her motherH517 saidH559, “91Let the girlH5291 stayH3427 with us a few daysH3117, sayH176 tenH6218; afterwardH310 she may goH1980.” 56He saidH559 to them, “Do not delayH309 me, since 92the LordH3068 has prosperedH6743 my wayH1870. SendH7971 me awayH7971 that I may goH1980 to my masterH113.” 57And they saidH559, “We will callH7121 the girlH5291 and 93consultH7592 her wishesH6310.” 58Then they calledH7121 RebekahH7259 and saidH559 to her, “Will you goH1980 with thisH2088 manH376?” And she saidH559, “I will goH1980.” 59Thus they sentH7971 awayH7971 their sisterH269 RebekahH7259 and 94her nurseH3243 with Abraham’sH85 servantH5650 and his menH376. 60They blessedH1288 RebekahH7259 and saidH559 to her, “May you, our sisterH269, 95BecomeH1961 thousandsH505 of tenH7233 thousandsH7233, And may 96your 97descendantsH2233 possessH3423 The gateH8179 of those who hateH8130 them.” 61Then RebekahH7259 aroseH6965 with her maidsH5291, and they mountedH7392 the camelsH1581 and followedH1980H310 the manH376. So the servantH5650 tookH3947 RebekahH7259 and departedH1980.

Isaac Marries Rebekah

62Now IsaacH3327 had comeH935 from goingH935 to 98Beer-lahai-roiH883; for he 99was livingH3427 in 100the 101NegevH5045. 63IsaacH3327 wentH3318 out 102to 103meditateH7742 in the fieldH7704 towardH6437 eveningH6153; and 104he liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869 and lookedH7200, and beholdH2009, camelsH1581 were comingH935. 64RebekahH7259 liftedH5375 up her eyesH5869, and when she sawH7200 IsaacH3327 she dismountedH5307 from the camelH1581. 65She saidH559 to the servantH5650, “WhoH4310 is that manH376 walkingH1980 in the fieldH7704 to meetH7122 us?” And the servantH5650 saidH559, “He is my masterH113.” Then she tookH3947 her 105veilH6809 and coveredH3680 herself. 66The servantH5650 toldH5608 IsaacH3327 allH3605 the thingsH1697 that he had doneH6213. 67Then IsaacH3327 broughtH935 her into his motherH517 Sarah’sH8283 tentH168, and 106he tookH3947 RebekahH7259, and she becameH1961 his wifeH802, and 107he lovedH157 her; thus IsaacH3327 was comfortedH5162 afterH310 108his mother’sH517 death.
