Genesis 16
American Standard Version
1Now SaraiH8297, Abram’s wifeH802, bare him no childrenH3205: and she had a handmaid, an EgyptianH4713, whose nameH8034 was HagarH1904. 2And SaraiH8297 saidH559 unto AbramH87, Behold now, Jehovah hath restrainedH6113 me from bearingH3205; goH935 in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall obtain childrenH3205 by her. And AbramH87 hearkened to the voiceH6963 of SaraiH8297. 3And SaraiH8297, Abram’s wifeH802, tookH3947 HagarH1904 the EgyptianH4713, her handmaid, after AbramH87 had dweltH3427 tenH6235 yearsH8141 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and gaveH5414 her to AbramH87 her husbandH376 to be his wifeH802. 4And he wentH935 in unto HagarH1904, and she conceivedH2029: and when she sawH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, her mistressH1404 was despised in her eyesH5869. 5And SaraiH8297 saidH559 unto AbramH87, My wrong be upon thee: I gaveH5414 my handmaid into thy bosomH2436; and when she sawH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, I was despised in her eyesH5869: Jehovah judgeH8199 between me and thee. 6But AbramH87 saidH559 unto SaraiH8297, Behold, thy maid is in thy handH3027; do to her that which is goodH2896 in thine eyesH5869. And SaraiH8297 dealt hardly with her, and she fledH1272 from her faceH6440.
7And the angelH4397 of Jehovah foundH4672 her by a fountain of waterH4325 in the wildernessH4057, by the fountain in the wayH1870 to ShurH7793. 8And he saidH559, HagarH1904, Sarai’s handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou? And she saidH559, I am fleeingH1272 from the faceH6440 of my mistressH1404 SaraiH8297. 9And the angelH4397 of Jehovah saidH559 unto her, ReturnH7725 to thy mistressH1404, and submit thyself under her handsH3027. 10And the angelH4397 of Jehovah saidH559 unto her, I will greatlyH7235 multiplyH7235 thy seedH2233, that it shall not be numbered for multitudeH7230. 11And the angelH4397 of Jehovah saidH559 unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bearH3205 a sonH1121; and thou shalt callH7121 his nameH8034 IshmaelH3458, because Jehovah hath heardH8085 thy affliction. 12And he shall beH1961 as a wildH6501 ass among menH120; his handH3027 shall beH1961 against every manH120, and every man’sH120 handH3027 against him; and he shall dwellH7931 over against all his brethren. 13And she calledH7121 the nameH8034 of Jehovah that spake unto her, Thou art a GodH410 that seeth: for she saidH559, Have I even hereH1988 lookedH7200 after him that seeth me? 14Wherefore the wellH875 was calledH7121 Beer-lahai-roiH883; behold, it is between KadeshH6946 and BeredH1260.
15And HagarH1904 bare AbramH87 a sonH1121: and AbramH87 calledH7121 the nameH8034 of his sonH1121, whom HagarH1904 bare, IshmaelH3458. 16And AbramH87 was fourscore and sixH8337 yearsH8141 old, when HagarH1904 bare IshmaelH3458 to AbramH87.
